A 12-year-old boy armed with a shotgun opened fire at a middle school in New Mexico on Tuesday, seriously wounding two students before a staff member persuaded him to put down the firearm, authorities said.

The shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell took place in a gym where students had gathered to stay warm from the frigid weather outside before the start of class, Governor Susana Martinez told reporters.

"The shooter was quickly stopped by one staff member who walked right up to him and asked him to set down the firearm, which he did," Martinez said. CNN quoted Martinez as hailing the intervening teacher as a "hero" for his action.

The wounded children were an 11-year-old boy, who students said had been shot in the face, and a 13-year-old girl, whose condition was serious but improved after surgery. The boy underwent two rounds of surgery and was in critical condition.

The adolescent shooter, who was not identified, remained in police custody on Tuesday night, New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas said. He had come to school that morning with a 20-gauge sawed-off shotgun concealed in a bag, Kassetas added.

The boy's motive remains unclear, police said, but student Monique Salcido, a friend of the two children who were shot, told CNN he had been bullied at the school.....snip-~

This is quite unfortunate. But now that the media Immortalizes these moments every kid out there now knows that when they want to go off. Do so at school. Shame.....now Team Obama and the Anti Gun Nuts will make use of this tragedy. What is your take upon the matter?

Very sad and disturbing.

However, I wholeheartedly disagree that how media covers shootings has an impact. If watching TV, or ready availibility of guns for that matter, causes you to disregard your moral compass and start blowing people away there's something else fundamentally wrong with you.

Mornin' Ben. :2wave: Well if that was the case. Then they would go off anywhere. Now its panning out to be more of a point to do something at school. Then they get the attemtion.

Hiya.

School is where their peers are. Workplace shootings are relatively common too. Whatever their anger is, that's what they perceive as the source of it.

Aren't you using this tragedy in an effort to rile up the "anti gun nuts" (yet again) and to point fingers at Obama for something he has absolutely no control over?

No.....as I don't have a Political Agenda nor any groups that are out to interfere with any others Rights. Nor can I invoke EO's over any shooting I see fit. Also due to being on a Political Site that competes with others, do you think it is appropriate for them to have the same Breaking News that most others have?

Although, its quite amazing how fast you deflected over the media already sporting the incident nationwide, like 38-48 minutes ahead of me. Did you want to explain that hypothesis out to them about your thought on how Obama has no control over these matters.

Then they will explain it like this......he has no control when they spring up. It's after that fact.....and then when he uses the names repeatedly in all his lil speeches around the country. Trying to amp up legislation for the interference of others Rights.

Now are you able to figure out that part on him speaking out on every School shooting and mass shootings on his watch. Invoking each and every ones name? You are aware of his friend Rahm Emanuel and his quote on not allowing tragic moments to get by without, using them.....correct? One can see why.....my thought would be what it is.

More on this. It appears that he the shooter a kid of age 12 went after the one who was bullying him. According to this piece he shot the other boy in the face twice with a shotgun.

Student, 12, Used Shotgun to Shoot 2 Students in Roswell, New Mexico, Cops Say

Odiee Carranza, an eighth grade student, told the Associated Press a boy bumped into her as he rushed toward the gym and apologized to her. When the boy entered the gym, Carranza said she saw him pull a gun out of a band instrument case and begin shooting.

She said he shot another boy twice in the face and shoot a girl in the arm.

"Then he shot up in the sky, then dropped the gun, and then some teacher grabbed the kid that had the gun," Carranza told the AP.

The Roswell incident is the latest school shooting to rattle the country. It comes one month after a gunman open fire at Arapahoe High School in Colorado.....snip~

Another shotgun shooting? Maybe Joe Biden feels bad about telling everyone to buy a shotgun now.

If not for Joe Biden, we'd never have gun violence. Thanks Biden.

And here I thought he was Demo-ing for Comedy Central.....little did I know that he wasn't putting on an act. "Hey Joe".....thanks for keeping it real. Should we ask him if he is experienced.

1) They need to not release his name. EVER!

2) This kid will have a history, and he likely (65% chance) will have revealed this motive online somewhere.

This stuff keeps happening. Why? We don't know. This tragedy, like many others, demonstrates a supreme lack of awareness in our society. A lack of psychological warning signs. This has nothing to do with guns. I'm sure the media will misrepresent facts and such as usual. Reporting what is best for their ratings, but maybe we can as rational adults realize that the problem lies at home. In our parenting.

I have been in schools. And I am sitting behind the curve trying to help a school write a policy to deal with this stuff. It is a nightmare and now every school is in fear of if. And the problem is that the school is one of the greatest resource in stopping it. Pay attention to the kids. Their needs.

This isn't a quick fix. Our culture is causing this. A supreme disconnect. And it is sad.

Heya Stonewall......I doubt he will be tried as an adult. I think here it was clear he went after who were the one who was bullying him. As he shot that kid in the face twice. I am surprised he lived with 2 shots to the head from a shotgun.

Though some schools are scared, too many others believe that it would never happen to them.

I'm sorry that you feel REALITY gets in the way of your narrative but whining that the news is reporting the NEWS is pretty damn stupid. Seriously what the **** is your argument? That people shouldn't report the news because you don't like hearing about it?

And yet you jump in with nothing but whining and complaining about nothing of value.

Seriously, what is your point?

Oh, yea, it's nothing.

Say what.....I am not saying anything about the news reporting it, other than them Immortalizing each one and their influence upon the next shooter.

Looks like you blew a gasket when you seen that I said.....that Team Obama and the Anti-gun Nuts will make use of this tragedy. Perhaps when talking about reality.....you should stick with what is already recorded down in their history.

Also remember this part well Wiseone.....I don't whine. As I wasn't cut from, the Lamb lies down mold.....you are use to.

Re: Boy, 12, opens fire at New Mexico school, wounds two students......

Another week. Another shooting. Not going to be a prosecution of who let a 12 year old take a gun to school. Nope. We have the right to be careless and stupid.

You are so right. A kid just doesn't go off the deep end overnight. It will build up and there will be cries for help, just pay attention. If a student at school is bothering another student so constantly to the point they snap, how does that go undetected?

We shouldn't try him as an adult. He is 11. But we do need to learn from him.

Exactly.....Ttwtt brought up before about why doesn't the schools and staff have signs up about No Bullying. No Disrupting class.

It's okay to make laws and put up gun signs. Yet they don't want to put up signs that point out much of the problems for young people and kids.

Morning MMC.

From what I understand, there has been quite an increase in bringing an anti-bullying message to schools. Of course, I don't know about the particular school where this happened.

In my opinion, the greater problem is with the social media and other means in which a person can be bullied. Back in the day, a bully had to actually get in anothers face, hoping to get others to join in.

Sadly today, it seems kids are so removed from reality they think tweets, or facebook posts, have depth and real consequence, and getting a bunch of anonymous people to join in bullying seems rather simple.

Throw in violent video games, and the mixture appears to be quite volitile.

Mornin' Ocean. :2wave: My OL's school does. Each and every teacher does in their classrooms too. They aren't like CPS schools though. Many of those schools have Chicago Cops or Metal detectors that all have to go thru entering the building.

It can help with the kids in school and of course we are only talking about this instance of the issue. As we have adults entering schools and or their grounds. Which doesn't explain them.
