Media hype about mass shootings in America has fostered a myth that the killings are on the rise and that an assault weapon ban, expanded background checks and greater attention to the mentally ill will curb a rampaging epidemic, according to an authoritative and exhaustive study by a noted criminologist.Instead, according to James Alan Fox, author and criminology professor at Northeastern University, mass shootings have remained stagnant over 34 years, averaging 20 a year, and few were committed by the type of berserk psychos portrayed by the media.
“Public discourse is grounded in myth and misunderstanding about the nature of the offense and those who perpetrate it,” he writes in the journal “Homicide Studies.” He added: “Without minimizing the pain and suffering of the hundreds of those who have been victimized in recent attacks, the facts clearly say that there has been no increase in mass shootings and certainly no epidemic.

The study debunks several proposals aired from
President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Democrats after the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting aimed at stopping mass killings. While he said any plan is worth trying, he concluded that short of abolishing the Second Amendment, there is little that can be done.

Hmmm...NO RISE in mass shootings...Now I wonder why we would have been lied to? Oh yeah, that's right...agendas....

This seems like one of those times when bias and agenda are going to allow you to see stats that support your argument. For instance
The yearly average of mass shootings has tripled from an average of five per year between the years of 2000 and 2008, the attorney general said. At least 12 mass shootings have taken place in 2013.

From 2009 to 2012, 404 people were shot and 207 killed, according to the US Department of Justice. From 2000 to 2008, 324 people were shot and 145 were killed.
.

I was looking at a mass shooting index site and you can set criteria a number of ways. This included number of victims, number of deaths ect. Numbers don't lie, but you can surely manipulate the criteria to make them tell a different story.

so let's put more controls on handguns. Works for me.

No. That is not a good idea. There's way to many anti-liberty unconstitutional gun control law on the books already.

Then guess ex-cops will keep shooting people who are texting in movie theaters.

Maybe if there was a law banning people from killing others with guns?

The point of the article was that mass shootings have not risen, and there are not more of these incidents happening, contrary to the hysterical ranting of the anti gun nuts out there.

Yes, but the op mentioned that handguns kill more people; if that is the case, then we need more controls on handguns (in my opinion)

I'm sure many people on this forum will vehemently disagree.

But you do not care about the killings, because you do not want to "control" the other killers.

You bet they will, starting with me.

That's cool. I'm not going to argue about it with you because I won't change your mind and you won't change mine.

Have a nice day. Hope your gun doesn't go off as you pull it from your truck and shoot your child.

This just in: 90% of intentional shootings are caused by gang bangers.

And the suicidal

You know most people don't off themselves with guns???

Why do you think there is a waiting period on guns in the first place?

Furthermore suicidal people are NOT a danger to anyone but themselves.

Truth is - if you want to kill someone or yourself you don't need a gun to do it - progressives believe you do.

There are no guns in prison yet people are whacked everyday and people kill themselves everyday, does the anti-gun crowed have anything to say about that?

Really....

I'm from Chicago and guess what? 99% of the murders here via gun are gang or drug related.

You sell dope to the wrong guy you get whacked, you do a drive by in the wrong hood you're getting a drive by right back at you - and that **** can last for weeks, months or even years, until the cops come in and attempt a truce and even when that doesn't work, they threaten to charge an entire gang with murder for one incident and even then that doesn't solve that problem because how the **** are they going to process 500 people in a gang war that spans 5-6 blocks?

Those are the nuts with the guns..... Not the guy who likes to go out shooting at clay pigeons or paper targets on the weekends while he spends a few hours with his buddies shooting the **** (no pun intended)...

You must be proud of wishing ill will on others.

You will reap what you sow.

I got one. If you support gun control then you cannot own guns.

honest citizens should be able to freely own anything civilian police departments (state and federal) use. that includes handguns. laws that deprive law abiding Americans from owning weapons increases violent crime
