Police:Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested[W:308

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

I'm never going to be able to tell anyone to shoot me a text again without thinking of this incident.

Just really sad for all concerned. Two families broken as a result of one crazy mans actions.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Ok, so I suppose there must be some sort of blend of the two in the middle? :)

Sure, why not.

I'm wondering if he really is crazy. My suspicion is that what started as an argument over the texting ended up getting hostile and the old guy (a retired police officer) felt he was in some danger. Now whether that was a reasonable belief or not is a question for the jury.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Not crazy, not anymore than any of the road rage idiots.

Guys like this endanger all our gun rights, esp. cc. Stupid ****.

A real man can keep control of himself....and doesnt feel like he is the 'appointed one' who should be 'teaching someone else a lesson.' Uncontrollable ego...16 forever.

Initiating the conflict and then shooting someone in a theatre showing complete disregard for everyones safety, security and comfort sounds pretty crazy to me.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

The movie hadn't even started yet. While I agree that it's annoying during the movie, at least during the previews, people should be able to do what they want without having to worry about being shot.

Link that the movie hadn't even started.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Link that the movie hadn't even started.

Well the article stated it.

Why,if it had started, would that have made the shooting 'legit?'

Ah yes. The first sentence of the story.

So then this wasn't a guy texting to the annoyance of his neighbors during the movie. The ex-police officer just decided to be a **** stirrer because he had a gun.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Texting in a theater is annoying.

yes, but not that annoying that it warrants murder or even verbal violence.

Police officers initiating conflict with peaceable citizens while disregarding everyone's safety, security and comfort?

It does indeed sound crazy...to hear that someone isn't already expecting such behavior from our criminal Justice system.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Damn multiple lives ruined over texting before the movie even started. That is pretty freaking sad.

Yes he was nuts.

In fear of what, the alphabet?

Improper grammar?

Viscous assault from buttered popcorn?

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

[snip]

Fun fact: Northern Italy has a very low murder rate. Northern Italians are also giant assholes. Southern Italy has a high murder rate, and Southern Italians are very very polite. I do not consider these to be disconnected facts
Bingo! :)

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

So apparently, the cop asked the texter on 3 different occasions to stop texting, and the guy refused. The texter was sitting in front of the cop, so the light might have been bothering the cop. Also, according to reports, the texter was making noise, as well. The cop gets up and goes out to the lobby to alert the staff. When he comes back, the texter gets all up in his bi'ness, yelling at him, asking him if he "told on him."

The argument escalated, popcorn was thrown and grampa shot the texter.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Obviously this ex-cop was a nut. I feel really sorry for the wife. That must have been pretty horrific for her. :(

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Yup, the ex cop was a nut and the texter was a gigantic douche. Had he just turned the damn phone off, like the movie theater - at that point - had asked him dozens of times to do, he would still be alive today. I go to the movies a lot. By the time the previews have started, you've only been asked 50 million times to turn off your cell phone.

Not saying it deserved to get him killed, but had he just hung up his douche hat for the day, and turned off the damn phone, he'd still be alive and his family wouldn't be destroyed.

I disagree. As long as the movie hasn't started nobody should give a damn.

Re: Police: Texting in movie theater sparks fatal shooting, retired officer arrested

Sometimes people having firearms is bad, yes. Sometimes people having drugs is bad, too, but just like drugs, making them illegal will not fix the problem. The demand is still there, and criminals will step up and seize the opportunity to make money if it is illegal. Making a high demand item illegal does nothing but empower the black market and make it so only a criminal can have possession of that item. Prohibition was a failure and fueled organized crime. The drug war is a failure and fuels organized crime. What makes you think it would be any different with guns? We need to accept the lesser evil and handle this stuff in a safe and controlled environment.

Police: Texting argument in movie theater sparks fatal shooting - CNN.com

This is the other side of the coin. Some times having a "good guy" with a gun ends up being far more dangerous than what would probably have been a simple assault or verbal spat. If we had several times more people running around with firearms for "safety" I wonder how many incidents like this would increase. Humans can lose their temper and react irrationally in the moment. This reminds me of another story where a guy leaving his driveway in his truck was accosted by a door to door salesman and shot him point blank out of pure momentary rage.

Rare instance.

Second, there are 88,000,000 Americans with guns (actually, 2013 was a HUGE bump in that number, namely in the 21 - 30 age group, half being females)...nearly between 1/4 - 1/3 Americans with a gun. If there was an increase by 'several times'....well everyone would carry.

Yes, that's a real number, per FBI crime database. Please don't bother disputing it, FBI crime database is one of those things you can't really twist. Compiling data from all local/state/fed police across the country basically 24/7. Instances where a gun was pulled, fired, present, and prevented a crime from occurring...be that assault/rape/robbery/attempted murder/etc.

So...given the one rare instance of the such, I'd hardly call it something discussing.

What makes me happy, is that 320,000,000 number jumped substantially in 2013. :) 21,093,273 to be exact per FBI database. And yes, it makes me feel safer....I was responsible for 21 of those.

Texting in a theater is annoying.

I can agree that it's annoying, but shooting them seems a bit extreme.

It's bound to come up now. It's like the lesson everybody learned from Zimmerman is it's OK as long as you claim you felt threatened (which is completely the wrong lesson).

Can't you understand the justice of the situation?
