West Virginia chemical spill cuts water to up to 300,000, state of emergency declared - U.S. News

A chemical spill into a West Virginia river has led to a tap water ban for up to 300,000 people, shut down bars and restaurants and led to a run on bottled water in some stores as people looked to stock up.

The federal government joined West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin in declaring a disaster as the West Virginia National Guard arranged to dispense bottled drinking water to emergency services agencies in the counties hit by the chemical spill into the Elk River.

Federal authorities are also opening an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the leak of as many of 5,000 gallons of chemicals and what triggered it, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Friday.

The advisory was expanded at night to nine counties and includes West Virginia American Water customers in Boone, Cabell, Clay, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Putnam and Roane counties.

It followed a notice from the West Virginia American Water Company that its water supply had become contaminated, sending a strange licorice-like smell wafting through the surrounding streets.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources told NBC affiliate WSAZ symptoms include: severe burning in throat, severe eye irritation, non-stop vomiting, trouble breathing or severe skin irritation such as skin blistering.

i hope the problem is solved soon

Thank god the EPA's budget got slashed 34% for 2014 otherwise situations like this may have gotten caught before it was a problem. Now we have more reality TV for the news cycle.

My thoughts are with these people. I hope they get through this is alright.

The EPA with that former budget stopped all problem from occurring?

This is what happens when a single industry has a stranglehold on local government. I can't think of a single state dominated by any industry more than West Virginia is by big coal.

It's so damn sad, I love the area and I have family that lives there, and Appalachia is one of the most beautiful environments in the United States. Whenever I visit you can tell that local residents know that Big Coal doesn't have them or their environments interests at their hearts but they are so reliant on coal mining they simply look the other way.

Can you imagine people trying to water livestock? Dairy cattle?

I hope that they can recoup ALL the costs...and reimburse private people as well...from the company that did this.

The company most likely will declare bankruptcy and open up under new management within a few months

Nonsense. I suppose the EPA is clairvoyant, right?

Yes, it is remarkable that a State and its people would want to fully benefit from a natural resource they have within their borders. Perhaps it would be better to close down the mines and all ancillary industry/business and put the entire State of West Virginia on the dole.

I think people can live without coal if they had the means to do so. Water is somthing no one can live without.

True - but can people live without employment?

And lets not forget that this isn't a coal industry accident, it's a chemical industry accident.

West Virginia's economy is heavily into chemicals, manufacturing, and other energy and resource industries. Just because this particular chemical that leaked into the water system is primarily used in the coal industry doesn't mean it's a coal industry problem.

History shows us that neither the FED nor the coal industry is capable of common sense or regulation.

The residents should know this by now.

Not in an area where the local economy operates as if it were still the 1920's.

From what I see, West Virginia's economy is pretty modern, with chemical production, biotech firms, aerospace, research and development, alternative energy, etc. etc.

Perhaps your view of the West Virginia economy is what's stuck in the 1920's

You are the one who stated that a reduction in coal activity would cause this "pretty modern economy" to fall apart.

If there's no risk to this spreading to other states then there's no reason for the feds to get involved.

Interesting - just like Katrina and Sandy, right?

Re: West Virginia chemical spill cuts water to up to 300,000, state of emergency decl

Why did the state, county and town governments allow the company to build their plant UPSTREAM of the local water treatment facility? The company couldn't find land downstream?

Go ahead and make your false accusation so I can get to the business of refuting it.

No, I didn't claim it would fall apart - I said there's nothing wrong with a state and its citizens wishing to exploit a natural resource within its boundaries and I said that people need employment to survive. I was commenting against those whose immediate knee-jerk reaction to a chemical spill accident was to blame the coal industry. Those who want to shut down all industry and resource development for environmental reasons disregard the need for people to have gainful employment.

Re: West Virginia chemical spill cuts water to up to 300,000, state of emergency decl

If the news is accurate, it's not that dangerous of chemical.

Most people have little idea how much of our modern life and everything a person has is based upon chemicals. They are essential to our society and economy.

Despite the highest of safeguards, like everything, things sometimes very unforeseeable and due to human's lack of absolute 100% pure perfect (unlike some on this forum claim to be and rage everyone else should too), accidents will happen, equipment will fail, and improbably sequences will occur.

Due to what chemical it is, it's not that big a deal. There are many, many times more dangerous be traveled around us all the time. Chemicals are everywhere. This just isn't advertised.
