The high times in Colorado are coming with high costs for cannabis consumers.Hemp hunters who waited for hours early Wednesday to be among the first to legally purchase marijuana from state retailers found sticker shock at cash registers.
“I think people were a little bit surprised at the price,” said Rachel Gillette, executive director of the Colorado chapter of NORML, a national nonprofit seeking to make marijuana use legal nationwide. “We are concerned about that.”

On the first day of legal weed sales, Gillette said she found retailers selling top-shelf marijuana to recreational users at prices close to $400 per ounce, not including taxes.

For comparison, medical marijuana users, who’ve been able to buy weed from Colorado dispensaries since 2010, are currently paying around $250 an ounce plus taxes, she said.

High Demand: Price of legal marijuana soars in Colorado - U.S. News

Good Lord! That's expensive....It's true, people will waste their money if given half a chance....I wonder how many of these people have paid their premium for their O-care? heh, heh....

Sounds like a case of supply and demand here.

Yeah, but my goodness...I remember buying an ounce for around $100. maybe I am dating myself....:(

This stuff they have today is hydroponically grown, cross pollinated hybrid stuff. Gourmet ****.

Damn, I can't wait to retire.

It may not be that easy. Just because it's legal and you might have a day off (or two or three or infinity) doesn't mean your brain will like it any longer. I learned that lesson the hard way myself.

it is amazing how many over the years could not afford healthcare but could afford pot, iphones, new cars, liquor, and cigarettes. Liberals are advocates for irresponsible people and it is tearing the country down.

Just for your information the first person allowed to buy some was an Iraq vet and the rest of the day was doctors and lawyers type according to the news reports. Perhaps you might consider developing opinions off of facts rather than throwing around really stupid generalizations you simply made up.

They're going to tax it 50-75% here in WA.

To me, that is just BS and will not resolve some of the black market issues, continuing to add to law enforcement, court, and prison costs. Buyers will get it coming AND going: paying higher taxes for their weed and continuing to pay for pot-related crime....which this was supposed to help dissipate.

Note: I 100% supporting national legalization but do not use pot.

Isn't it legal to grow for personal use as well? There you have the answer, roll yer own.

I really like that they are doing this but at these prices it won't hurt the black market like I hope it does. Prices have to come down for that to happen. I'm sure it will when more places open up and the novelty of this new thing wears off.

Something like a 4 or 6 plant grow ur own limit I think.

I was in fort collins last fall after the legislation had passed and people were already going crazy, your snotty opinion does not change facts that many who complain about health insurance costs are the same ones that have money to buy everything else including pot.

That's not a "fact."

Obviously the supply will catch up with the demand. More dispensaries will be opened and more people will begin living the American dream: starting their own profitable business and being able to move up and down the socioeconomic ladder at will. The prices will certainly fall once the free market has its way.

Yeah, engineered bud from seasoned botanists run a pretty price. The stuff these shops are pushing isn't street swag. You get what you pay for.

Oh, 400 easy. I've heard of it being higher (no pun intended).

People have become connoisseurs. Do you want the civic, or the s4? Nothing against either, they get the job done, but one is clearly the top of the food chain.

Regular good old whatever

Buyers market now my man. Expect some R&D early and often, the private market has taken over. Competition. I'm sure the prices will drive down soon. They need to compete with whatever street is still around. Bootleggers were around for a few after prohibition...that didn't last long. The market will adjust. The people will also see the comparison, doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at the pictures above and see a difference.

They'll have to cater to a completely different gourmet market. Since they don't have any facility to smoke it in, it isn't Amsterdam. The best part of Amsterdam is getting high with other people from all over the world. People that are friendly and aren't looking for anything but some shared conversation. In a way, they remind me of a legal hooker without a room.

Should be very interesting to see how this goes.

R&D has been done by the Euros for decades.
Slight variations on a couple major strains.
Nothing new under the sun.
I agree that the price will come down.

I think the HUGE groundbreaking R&D has come out of Canada, Humboldt County Cali, and of course Amsterdam.

Want to know something wild? I don't even smoke.

If med school and my second amendment right wasn't on the line, I'd open a dispensary in .2 seconds.

I do....occasionally.....over a year since I inhaled.
This brandy eggnog is my current mind-altering substance.
Your non-smoking knowledge is impressive.:)

I know a few things about a few things for a few reasons. Divide by zero.

I'm a cognac/absinthe/jager guy myself. I do love me brandy (well, all cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is cognac). What do you drink?
