Done deal: Fiat buys Chrysler assets | ABC News

Now fellas, get ready for this:

I love little wagons and I hope Fiat forces the competition to make more of these types.

Last year, I heard all this crying about the price of gas. But the best selling vehicles were heavy pickup trucks. So, apparently that $3.50 gas didn't ruin the economy. But some of us need a vehicle that is small but carries a decent load of groceries and such.

Fiat has controlled Chrysler since the Diamler-Chrysler days and the restructuring. That they now have full control - I don't see much changing. Fiat would be idiotic to try and push small cars in NA and go full blown moron with that idea. That said, there's a place for small cars in urban cities on both coasts that may work to their advantage with a few models. If they kill off RAM and some of the iconic retro cars like the Charger and Challenger due to their full control, I'll go back to becoming a Ford man.

"Little Wagons"?

We call those coffins with wheels here in Texas.

Pregnant skateboards in OH.

Speed bumps if one drives a big truck!

they wont kill off Ram

Ram is making lots of money, and under Fiat it was separated from Dodge.

Fiat wants to share platforms with the 300 C, Charger etc to amortize the costs of building some Maserati and Alfa cars that need to be RWD to compete with the germans.

The Jeep grand Cherokee is the basis for a new Maserati SUV

I'm always amazed at the justifications friends and acquaintances will use to buy a pick up trick. 'No man, I really move a lot of stuff. Like I had to move to my apartment and I could have never done that without the pickup.' The dick pumping that people get from big cars is so mystifying to me.

Yeah, I use that same justification, because I do use it to haul garden stuff, lumber, furniture, and all kinds of things. I really don't need to justify it to anyone, as long as I am willing to pay for it, and for the gasoline and upkeep necessary to keep it running. (oh, and I don't have a dick to pump up).

I drive a Scion Xb and I used to travel between Las Vegas and San Francisco with my cat. He has more damn luggage than I do! I can move some pretty big items and if I have to haul lumber, I'll rent a pickup for the day. I classify pickups with baggy pants - a pointless fashion statement.

But I see how people buy these monster trucks and then crab about the cost of gas. Surreal.

45 years ago we had in the Soviet Union the same machine. People called her "bed bug".

Some people do need a truck. Try doing carpentry work out of the back of a compact car, or hauling firewood in a hatchback. However, most people that have them don't have them because they really need them, but rather its because they like driving them. In their case, I agree, its ridiculous to drive a gas guzzler then bitch about the price of gas (especially considering that by driving a gas guzzler you are part of the problem when it comes to high gas prices). I used to drive a 4wd Crew Cab Colorado. I always liked driving trucks and they fit with my lifestyle in that it was easy to throw fishing equipment in the back, a canoe on it, throw my road bike in it and so on. Plus the 4wd was nice in the snow and when I needed to get up a jeep road to a trail head. However, when gas started getting really expensive I traded in the truck for a little Kia Soul. I got literally twice the mpg, have plenty of space to throw stuff in the back like fishing equipment or my road bike, and if I need to get up a poorly maintained forest service road to a trailhead I just drive my wife's Subaru. I still liked driving trucks better, but its not enough to justify the piss poor mpg they get.

As a side note, my Kia Soul actually has better crash test ratings than my truck did, and being it stops much quicker its probably a safer vehicle to drive.

for people who live alone or who are without kids yet, such a small car in a city setting could be very useful. Low cost fuels and easy parking. Or as a second car for someone. If you live on the country and need to transport stuff such a car will never work for you and you would be dumb to have that as your only car. But as a second car maybe it would even work there. I think this will be the kind of car a lot of young people might at one time own, especially if they make them cooler and keep them affordable to buy and operate.

I own a Fiat Panda and love it, it looks nice, drives well and doesn't bankrupt your wallet.

A lot of people in the country have an old truck as their second vehicle to haul stuff with or when the need a truck, but their daily driver is a newer fuel efficient car. Modern small cars are designed to be roomier inside than they used to be. I have a wife and 3 kids and we do just fine with her driving a Subaru Outback and me driving a Kia Soul. All 5 of us fit into either car comfortably. We have made no telling how many 7 hour road trips down to Arkansas in those vehicles and several 14 hour road trips down to Houston in them.

I just love the Kia Soul, which I consider a knockoff of my Scion. I mean that in a nice way.

I have neighbors that do carpentry and gardening. Of course they have big old pickups.

Also, I don't have a bad attitude toward the Hummer drivers, unless they complain about gas prices. If you can afford to drive a giant vehicle, you have every right to do so. But why?

I agree, modern small cars make a lot better use of the space inside and are surprisingly roomy for their outside dimensions and I love driving my small car all over the Netherlands if I have to do that.

That car looks like it would overheat pretty easily. How is it pulling air in through those tiny little vents for a grill?

I like my Soul, but I think in the future I will go the route my wife has and always get a Subaru. They are by far the best vehicle you have have in the snow as they are the only true AWD, they are reliable, utilitarian, and fuel efficient. I have taken my wife's Outback up roads that I could have hardly gotten a stock 4wd truck up.

Oh, yeah, snow. It only snows about once a decade here. So, you are in a very different situation.

If I do buy one more car in my life, it will be even smaller than my Scion. But this is likely my last car.

Yes. This car has air-cooled rear engine. The design was stolen from the Italian Fiat 600.

Yeah, like they are moving to a new place every month.
If I have to transport firewood I'll just pay a truck to do it, like I did 2 months ago. :)
Now there really are people who need pick up trucks and I don't mind if they have them.

The dick pumping that people get from big cars is so mystifying to me.

Yes, there is certainly a connection between those two. Psychologists need to speak here. ;)

I drive a 4cyl. Ranger for my work truck and my Wife drives a Frontier. Hardly monster trucks....but both of us haul large loads on a regular basis.

Concern over getting crunched by a larger vehicle keeps use out of the clown cars

We are, however, talking about Fiat. Had they figured out what Americans wanted they would have been a player in the American market before now.
