The company confirmed a Reuters report on Wednesday that said federal authorities were investigating a data breach, which started on the busy Black Friday weekend.....snip~

Attention Shoppers of Target in the US and Canada.....if you used your credit and debit cards at Target from Black Friday til Dec 15. You could have possible trouble with your account and had your info stolen.

Information that would allow others to open up Cards and or purchases in your name. Any cards that were swiped.....is where they found the way in. Off the back of magnetic strip that encodes the info.

Secret service is Investigating......and is on the J.O.B. Looks like they are taking this one seriously now. 40 Million People. Although.....why isn't the FBI investigating?

Perhaps they are treating it like sort of like federal immigration law; 11 million suspected violators so they dispatch 5 thousand ICE field agents to pretend to address it. ;)

Mornin' Ttwtt.....yeah I had to ask the OL. Which she did. Myself, I try not to use any cards.....period.

Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Target holiday cyber breach hits 40 million payment cards | Reuters

(Reuters) - Target Corp said hackers might have stolen data from some 40 million credit and debit cards of shoppers who visited its stores during the first three weeks of the holiday season in the second-largest such breach reported by a U.S. retailer.
In terms of the speed at which the hackers were able to access large numbers of credit cards, the data theft was unprecedented. It took place in the 19 days from the day before Thanksgiving to Sunday, in the heart of the crucial Christmas holiday sales season.
Target, the No. 3 U.S. retailer, said on Thursday that it was working with federal law enforcement and outside experts to prevent similar attacks in the future. It did not disclose how its systems were compromised.
Experts said the incident could not have come at a worse time for Target, which is working to woo sales away from rivals in the last week of the holiday shopping season. Complaints from customers began to surface on social media as they learned of it early Thursday morning.

Good thing private sites are so much better than the government ones.

About time America upgrades their CC system to smart chips.

I'm just surprised that 40 million Americans shopped at Target over Thanksgiving, glad I wasn't one.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

You don't know that Target stores are physical stores?
There physical stores weren't hacked, their computer systems were. Geez, really you think someone when into all those stores in US and Canada and stole the information from there???

Heya Monte.....yeah what they are also concerned about is, the Hackers can produce another card with all that comes off the magnetic strip.

Hey bud. But only if you shopped at Target, right.

 Yeah.....I just wonder if the Secret Service will actually come up with something. Maybe they should check with the NSA. As I am sure they know who those hackers are.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Well...it happened to the credit card processors and issuing banks, too...so to think it couldn't happen to a computerized retail system would be a bit naive, IMO.

I wonder if I should do a security close on my Target REDcard debit card, just to be safe....

Either that or you can contact Trans Union and let them know to keep an eye out on any activity with your credit. That you and yours are not looking to open any new accounts, cards, or lines of credit.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

This happens all the time in the US. Most credit card fraud happens in the US. And it is simple why... the technology the CC companies use is outdated and easy to hack. This type of hack that happened at Target... would never ever be possible to happen in Europe. We use smart chips and have 2 if not 3 step authentication, so it simply could not happen. The magnetic strip has not been used in Europe for over a decade.. chips ftw!

Mornin' Pete. :2wave: Not really.....this is the first time that 40 million people are affected or numbers that just blow the top off of anything else we had.. Someone is going to get hit and they know it. They can duplicate any of these peoples info into a card or credit line. Or who knows what else.

Its definitely a major screw up. Someone has already filed on Target.

Best advice is to stay on top of your bank statement. Amazing how many people never even check theirs. Found 8 pending chgs on mine the other day from Redwood, CA. 4 for $1, 4 for $46.80. When I looked up the website listed, it was some Star Wars gaming site. Had to cancel my debit card and get a new one. No idea how/when anybody got my #. I don't even shop at Target.

Yeah.....this is already getting serious. You are Right on the bank Statement. Already they are telling people what they can do. Here s Targets Hot Line number too.

4 things to do after your credit card has been hacked.....

1) Check your statement. It may seem obvious, but the first step you should take is looking for any charges you don't recognize on your statement.

Don't just look for large charges, either. Hackers often ping an account with micropayments of only a few cents to check the viability of the account. So if you see purchases of 6 cents or 11 cents, that could be a sign your information has been compromised.

2) Call your credit card company, bank and Target. Credit card companies generally offer customers fraud monitoring services at no cost, and customers aren't on the hook for any fraudulent charges. Typically, the card issuer or the merchant is responsible for those costs.

But don't wait for your card company or bank to call you. Let them know you've shopped at Target recently. All you have to do is call the number on the back of your card.

Target has also set up a phone line for customers who suspect there has been unauthorized activity on their accounts. Shoppers can call 866-852-8680.....snip~

Mornin' Pete. :2wave: Not really.....this is the first time that 40 million people are affected or numbers that just blow the top off of anything else we had..

Not really...it happens all the time. Just this year 5 men were jailed for 200+ million dollars in credit card fraud done on mostly US credit cards. Or this case from 2008..

11 Charged in Massive Credit Card Fraud Case | Fox News

The US is regularly hit by breaches to its credit cards, most are "minor" but there are a lot of them, but there are some big ones around. I saw an interview with a security expert who broke the Target story and he said that he was on his 5th credit card this year due to suspected fraud. The people in the studio (Bloomberg) also told of them being hit by fraud and the CC company shrugging it off and replacing the money gone.

It all boils down to the fact that the US CC system is outdated and flawed and easily hacked.

Someone is going to get hit and they know it. They can duplicate any of these peoples info into a card or credit line. Or who knows what else.

Its definitely a major screw up. Someone has already filed on Target.

No, no one screwed up but the credit card industry that lets bean counters run the show instead of security experts. This comment from the following case... says it all..

U.S. indicts hackers in biggest cyber fraud case in history | Reuters

Prosecutors said he charged $10 for U.S. cards, $15 for ones from Canada and $50 for European cards, which are more expensive because they have computer chips that make them more secure.

Can we please move to chip and pin already? Sheesh I hate agreeing with Pete even a little bit.

Update: This morning they are saying.....that they have discovered new cards of peoples identity stolen, already overseas. They have stolen cards on sale over the net already. That they believe the hackers were from overseas.

Black Friday madness

Investigators believe that overseas hackers were responsible for the cyber attack on U.S. retailer Target Corp that compromised up to 40 million payment cards during the first three weeks of the holiday shopping season, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The person, who was not authorized to talk publicly about the matter, declined to say how the hackers got in or where investigators believe they are based, saying investigators don't want to show their hand to the criminals.

Meanwhile the blogger who first broke news of the breach, Brian Krebs, reported that data stolen from Target had begun flooding underground markets that sell stolen credit cards.

KrebsOnSecurity.com reported on Friday that cards stolen from Target were being offered at "card shops" for rates starting at $20 each and going to more than $100.

Target has said that hackers accessed data on up to 40 million payment cards over 19 days through Dec 15 in the second-largest retail breach in U.S. history. It is not known who is behind the attack or how they accessed Target's network.....snip~

Good morning MMC. Oh boy, not good. I've been keeping a close eye on my CC's. never use debit because of this type of thing. I hope this doesn't get too big.

Mornin' Monte. :2wave: I am the same way. But now it is getting bad. These guys are flipping them into real credit cards. Visa and Mastercards. From a Store Card. This weekend Target is giving out a discount. I am thinking they are laying a trap for them at the same time. Didn't take them long at all.

My wife went there and shopped. So told her to keep an eye out and let the bank and Trans Union know.

Target Offers Discounts As Investigators Look At Overseas Hackers.....

Target Corp. is offering its 10 percent employee discount to shoppers this weekend following a massive breach of its customers’ credit and debit card information.

Meanwhile, investigators believe that overseas hackers were responsible for the cyberattack that compromised up to 40 million payment cards during the first three weeks of the holiday shopping season, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

“Our guests’ trust is our top priority at Target and we are committed to making this right,” Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel said in a statement on Target’s website Friday.

The offer is limited to one in-store transaction per guest. Target has also pledged free credit monitoring for affected customers.

Government investigators don’t believe the overseas hackers had inside help, according to Reuters’ source, who was not authorized to talk publicly about the matter.

The source declined to say how the hackers got in or where investigators believe they are based, saying investigators don't want to show their hand to the criminals or afford them a chance to destroy evidence.

She said the stolen information was limited to data stored on the magnetic strip.

The hackers did not obtain PIN numbers used to access ATMs or the three or four-digit security codes that are printed on cards to verify online purchases, Snyder said.

She said Target has provided exposed card numbers to Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Those companies are in turn providing the information to the financial institutions that issue them.....snip~
