Target Confirms Major Card Data Theft during Thanksgiving

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

That's a little unnerving. I'm glad I didn't shop there. But I suppose it could just as easily be someplace else next time, where I have just shopped.

What they are saying now.....this is 70 million that have been doubled hack. This time it is worse as they have Email Accounts. Which they can sell to spammers, and others. So its 70 Million on top of the 40 Million. With access to peoples Emails. Which lets them into a whole a lot of other things.

To top it off Neiman Marcus also was hacked just recently.

You mean to say that 110,000,000 Americans shop at Target?? Anyway, I wonder how this ends, I mean a certain number of those shoppers are going to have a bad taste in their mouths toward Target, that won't be good for business. But what about else where's, other stores, etc! This is so very uncool, could and should Target be held accountable (legally) to any harm done their customers, and if they are, what could that be and could they bear it? It's a very real mess!

Yeah, and Target says it will give free credit check for a whole year. Once people start reporting their emails hacked an info from their putters. It's going to get nasty then. Currently they think Target will weather the storm.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

I sell Lifelock, I work in a call center. I expect it to be very busy this morning..Life lock is about the besy you can do -you do get proactive alerts, but you gotta get the Ultimate service.
$25 a month to stop ID theft is worth it. The merchants aren't that careful, and criminals can damage your credit, andpossible take over your accounts, or set up a false account in your name..etc.

I use no online bill paying, even though I got a free membership/ I don't use a debit card, and I moniter my credit monthly.

Wow, and what can be done, if anything going forward?

People will have to stay on top of their finances and their Emails. Wonder how many top Nation Retailers it will take before they decide to change up to the Chip.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that, so we need to be getting about that.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Heya Monte :2wave: Yeah.....and not only did they get the credit card and debit info. But peoples addresses and Phone numbers.

Greetings MMC!

The early analysis I saw about this predicted that the original numbers would double, and there would be more fallout.

Looks like they were right.

My question is whether Target was sandbagging, they were inept and clueless, or they just lied.

Most I talk with think that Target knew all along as to what info they got. Giving a 10% discount on things isn't anything. Nor is keeping tabs on peoples accounts.

Whats worse is when these hackers start getting to other's.....Retail cards to other stores. Like Sears and Walmart.

Congress will need to do something if all start taking hits. Including getting into peoples bank accounts.

would definately be an improvement. not an expert on this but the magnetic strip is easily hacked.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Privacy is the issue. If you have a card and never used it you are at risk of losing all of you money invested and or banked. This is a very sophisticated hack consequently all of you monies tied to your name and SS# (originally it was said they did not have your SS# but now they say it has most likely been hacked as well) so watch it you may lose everything you have. Don't think for one second you are guaranteed a FDIC refund because this could take everyone's monies all at once and you will get nothing and this could happen with the single stroke of a "Enter" button. This could be the worst in history resulting in millions ending up penniless.

Mornin AT. :2wave: Yeah this morning due to Neiman Marcus getting hit. They are saying people need to check their statements at least once a month. Stay proactive and check online. Now the numbers have increased. Plus some banks are worried they will be able to get into peoples accounts.

Target says data breach up to 110 mn customers......

Giant US retailer Target said Friday that up to 110 million customers have had their personal data stolen in a data breach, sharply raising its initial estimate.

The number of people affected represented one in three Americans, and the scope of the information stolen was much broader than originally thought, Target admitted.

Target initially reported on December 19 that payment card data of some 40 million customers had been obtained by hackers during the year-end holiday shopping season.

The stolen information included credit and debit card data, customer names and PIN (personal identification data) numbers.

On Friday, Target said that its investigation had revealed that hackers also stole a second batch of data that included names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses for up to 70 million people.

"This theft is not a new breach; these are two distinct thefts as part of the same breach," a Target spokesman told AFP.

"The 70 million guests impacted by this new development are separate from the 40 million number that was previously shared."......sniP~

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Some more info for those affected. ;)

Factbox: How to deal with Target's data breach......

Q: How did the hackers get phone numbers, street and email addresses? Is this kind of data included in store transactions?

A: Target is still investigating the incident, which is why the number of people affected and the scope of the breach keeps changing.

The information stored on the magnetic stripe on a credit or debit card will not pass along a home address or email address from an in-store swipe. But other cards may share additional info, like a store-brand credit card that requires the user to provide that data at sign-up.

If thieves have this information, it could also mean online purchases are affected, said Robert Siciliano, online security expert for Internet security company McAfee Inc. "There is certainly more to this story," he says.

Q: How do you know if your information is stolen?

A: It's impossible to know if your data has been stolen and if it might be used for fraud, but it is a growing problem and consumers need to be on alert. The number of people notified after a data breach that they were victimized by fraud rose by 340 percent between 2010 and 2012, according to a recent report from Javelin Strategy & Research.....snip~

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

Hi MMC, Is it possible to know who did this? Could it be a foreign government. Is LE on this and talking about it. If so is it FBI?

Good morning, MMC. :2wave:

Thanks for keeping us updated on this.

I note that Neiman-Marcus is also affected...I wonder how many others are going to come to light? I never applied for cards from these two, but I have used my credit card at both. Could this be another way to destroy businesses in the US? This seems to be too large to be random hacking.

Its not random. Rumor from the Feds is this was done by criminal organizations. But that's not to say others weren't hit up either. Like small businesses wherever people used their credit cards. What they said on the radio was.....there is no mistaking they got the info on people and getting into Emails.

Re: Hope you didn't go to Target on Black Friday

I was one of the 110 million. Forunately my bank contacted me and were the ones to let me know and sent me a new card. Target admitted this... I'm wondering how many know but don't to protect their image and their stock prices?

I seem to recall early news I dictating that many of the Target stores had been physically visited to obtain the data.

That indicated a coordinated attack.

I am unsure if this is still correct.

Coordinated hacking to gain funds to keep hacking.

Very sophisticated these days, coordinated, and international.

:agree: It sure seems like we're hearing about new hackings quite regularly these days, doesn't it? Bringing us to our knees financially works just as well as militarily, it appears, and much easier to do.

Greetings, SMTA. :2wave:
