When I saw this on the news last night I laughed so hard I cried. It was like a Saturday Night Live skit. How did this nut not get drug off the stage immediately and more importantly how did he get there in the first place standing next to world leaders? South Africa seems to run like a finely tuned machine, what a joke of a country.

"Deaf people watching the Nelson Mandela memorial were bemused and shocked by a "fake" sign language interpreter on stage whose gestures were unintelligible, activists said Wednesday.
The interpreter was watched by millions as he stood beside speakers at the event including President Barack Obama".

It did seem rather sureal when i heard about it.

I really don't know what I was expecting.

This is comical.

Here are some quotes from the CNN story which are just making me laugh out loud.

"I've interpreted in many press conferences, including the presidential conference," he said. "There was no one at all that said I interpreted wrong."

Which is wrong because:

Not so, says the head of the South Africa Translators' Institute.

There were complaints last year after Jantjie interpreted the proceedings at the ruling African National Congress elective conference, the institute's chairman Johan Blaauw told the South African Press Association.

Next it is

"For the deaf association, if they think that I've done a wrong interpretation, I ask forgiveness," Thamsanqa Jantjie said. But he said he has long been "a champion of what I've been doing."

And the last part of the story that was included:

He also said he is schizophrenic.

Now, right there I haven't seen **** like that since Baghdad Bob. Absolute comedy :lamo

I have seen enough sign language to know this guy did not know sign language in the first 10 seconds but somehow he stayed there the entire event.

It would have been funnier if he were signing that the guy next to him smells funny. Or his feeling about jello wrestling.

His disease is not that funny but the disfunction and probable mass corruption that has to exist in the South African Govt that would allow this to happen is hillarious.

I love this, it's absolutely fantastic! I nominate him for comedian of the year. Right up there with the fake crew names for that flight out in California.

Same here. His "vocabulary" seemed to consist of the same six or seven signs, most of which involved the same right-to-left arc.

I take issue with this, because thos skitzoid clown was allowed with in arm's reach of the president.

Psych issues. I hear the service started an hour late and went over 4 hours. It was disorganized, and Obama's on the couch for the next week for flirting.

I know, right!?!?

I laughed my ass off. That's crazier than that hottie chick in the red dress crashing the White House party.

I can't help but think of all the deaf people going, "WTF?"

I was thinking were there deaf people watching this and wondering if it was Swahili or something?

I guess they figgered it was ok, since he's black.

I honestly don't understand how this could happen. My first instinct is to put all the blame on South Africa but it seems like our Government would know how inept there government is and would have done some checking on this guy who was going to stand next to our president. I'm beginning to wonder about our secret service these days.

I almost want to see that. Can you imagine a pissed-off deaf person? Loud, unintelligible grunts. Probably sounds like a horny gorilla.

"Unnnnnnnnnh! Unh Unh uuuuuuuuuuuunh!"

obviously that was not American Sign Language
it was african sign language

keep hoping to see risky show up and sign us a post
