Obama shakes hands with Cuba's Castro in 'gesture of hope'

since you addresed me, the Havana buildings are constantly worked on.
They need to raze some of them, and need US type contractors - skilled labor, but more than that materials.
Craftmen/carpenters manage to try to kepp them up, but the climate, and the age is taking it's toll.

Again i mention the US is a natural trading partner (by geography), and it is just plain stupid to keep a hostile regime
even more hostile by a useless US Embargo.

Yes Cuba trades with the world, but the old Soviet subsidys are gone. The US subsidizes our sugar - it's even called "Big Sugar"
and it's damn near ruined the Everglades.

Cuba isn't a rich country, and their socilism has good and bad parts, they are finally encouracing some private enterprise.
The US should be encouraging this, not punishing them with an outdated Embargo

The Cuban Embargo is FUBAR - Urban Dictionary: fubar

So the only people in the world that can fix these buildings are from the US? Why do you think the Cuban workers are not capable of doing good work?

Believe it or not, not everyone needs a US type anything to do good work.

And just how would a country with the resources of Cuba get more?

It doesn't take a lot to exert influence on Haiti, dude. Singapore exerts influence throughout Southeast Asia.

Do I need to define sophistry for you?

No, you need to write in understandable English. And wtf is a plonk? It's amusing when those without an education get all high and mighty about three syllable words. Was 'sophistry' on your word calendar today?

I wonder if those nations Singapore has influence on are anything like Haiti whom we exert influence on.

Kids these days:roll:

There's a way to find out. You have the entirety of non-classified or proprietorial information at your hands in the form of the internet. There's many nations with fewer resources that exert influence greater than Cuba.

You asked what was better; I told you. Accept it or don't.

I really don't care about what you partisans argue. Grant says dumb ****? You say dumb ****? I don't care, I don't have a "side": that's for the idealistic among us. I'm not conservative, I'm not progressive, I'm just pragmatic. I'm just here (in this world, not just DP) to give facts and laugh at people who spout nonsense. Take the facts or the laughter, it doesn't matter to me which it is.

Actually they usually do.

I think you have it backwards. Freedom brings prosperity. People work hardest when its for themselves and top down govt rarely knows best.

Thats how it works for us. But I've lived in countries which had to do it in reverse. Like South Korea. In regard to Cuba, that may be the only strategy.

People work hardest when they have something to do. America is the single greatest land of opportunity. We are an amazingly rich country in resources. Cuba is in pretty bad shape. If even a small middle class were created, they might be able to throw off their shackles.

Absolutely correct. The ROK took off under a dictatorship. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and people that pretend there is are among the very dumbest of us.

As soon as a Cuban gets enough money for an inner-tube, they set sail.

The middle class always shrinks when there is too much government control of the economy. We can see that happening in the US now in fact.

I could be wrong but I think Cuba has no middle class to shrink. So, they'll need a different strategy. The objective being to diminish the control of their government.

I could be wrong, but didn't every former U.S. President shake hands with his Soviet counterpart when they met, like Reagan and Gorbachev? I'm sure Nixon shook the hand of his Chinese counterpart when he went to China for the first time. So, what's the problem with President Obama shaking hands with his Cuban counterpart?

I bolded the wingnuts' main problem with it.
