Obama: Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff In Honor Of Nelson Mandela [W:382]

Kennedy klan--I kan play that game apache..
Remember Kandidate Kal Koolidge..
I kid you not--when the klan was so popular in 1924, these were leaflets in churches..
This was the 1st wave of Dixiecrats becoming REpubLies .

Gah, don't do this, it's like dealing with Zimmer.

I believe it was the CIA who coined the phrase.

I don't believe they forced you to use it here. Why do you try and blame others for what you say?

I have no problem with using the phrase "Kennedy klan."

You libs may live in a black and white world but your a minority.

Klan comes from the Greek word "kuklos" which means circle, as in a circle of friends or a band of brothers, the Kennedy klan, a circle of Kennedy supporters who protect the JFK legacy.

None of which is in any way relevant to why you used it. Congratz on being able to figure out how to use a dictionary though.

President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered flags to fly at half-staff at the White House and public buildings, with the US in mourning over the death of "close friend" and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.
Obama's proclamation, which also extended to the White House, US foreign missions, military posts, naval stations and military vessels, was valid through sunset on Monday.

"Today, the United States has lost a close friend, South Africa has lost an incomparable liberator, and the world has lost an inspiration for freedom, justice, and human dignity -- Nelson Mandela is no longer with us, he belongs to the ages," he said in the document.

"Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, he transformed South Africa -- and moved the entire world.

For a Communist? Antithesis to Freedom and Liberty?

And nothing for Maggie Thatcher...nothing

I truly want to vomit.

Since this thread is about flying the flags at half-staff for Nelson Mandela, I'm sure that some people reading this might like to learn more about how and why he destroyed Apartheid in South Africa.

You could start learning that here: http:// bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa10524587

I'll just kick it off by saying that the USA could have done a lot more to speed up the end of Apartheid in South Africa.

Maybe the USA was too busy fighting Communism which some people saw as less of a problem than the mistreatment they were suffering from people in their own country.

Does anyone remember the loungey piano bars that used to be all over the place before they were replaced by go-go bars?

You seldom see a piano in a bar nowadays.

Or any lizards, for that matter, unless you're south of the border.

I always wish I had learned to play piano for the rare occasion you stumble on a piano in a bar ... I would tickle the ivories for a little while, get some free drinks and go home with a nice floozy.

No big problem with Mandela and the flag at half staff. I mean, look at it this way; When Obama dies, they might fly the flags at half staff (hope not). Now, that would be a true slap in the face to those who stand for freedom and liberty.

Actually that's what America was doing at the time, fighting the Cold War and the NAC and it's war against the South African government was considered one of the Cold War proxy wars being fought in Africa at the time. Who trained the NAC ? The Soviets. Who armed the NAC ? Fidel Castro and Cuba.

Read the Reagan Diaries or other biographies on Reagan. As for Ronald Reagan in his personal diaries, he just said he didn't like Mandela.

During the 80's there were both Republicans and Democrats who opposed economic sanctions against South Africa because it would be like supporting the Soviet Union during the Cold War while we were fighting them at the same time.

BTW: The link doesn't seem to work.

Oh. My. God. No one is buying this Apache. No one uses it that way except for... the Ku Klux Klan. Because they named themselves after it. This is silly. Let it go!

There is a massive difference between acknowledging the necessities of certain US foreign policy positions in the context of the Cold War and actively castigating the people who we had the misfortune of having to fight.

The article chronicles the history of the South African nuclear program. What is it you are trying to illustrate?

Did you open the PDF file and read the entire article ? It kinda explains the correlation of the apartheid government and the Cold War.

Don't you people remember all of the Soviet and Cuban backed civil wars going on in Africa during the 70's and 80's ?

Remember mercenaries and Soldier of Fortune magazine along with Easyrider magazine ?

There was more going on than disco and cocaine back then.

How many of the uniformed didn't know that South Africa had nuclear weapons ?

I'm well aware of the history of South Africa and the wider region in the context of the Cold War. I'm not sure what point you are trying to get across. Once again there is a massive distinction between the decision (for which I will pass no retrospective censure) to prioritize fighting regional Communist powers over ending Apartheid in South Africa; and castigating Mandela and his affiliates for trying to topple what was in effect a fascistic, racist, dictatorship.

I read the article Shrub. Nothing new that I haven't known for over thirty years.

>" The ANC began to advocate violence and Mr Mandela was made commander of its newly formed military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe.

The group's policy was to attack property - under his auspices, the ANC carried out a sabotage campaign, blowing up government pass offices, electricity pylons and attacking police stations.

However, in his autobiography Mr Mandela makes it clear they were prepared to go further and engage in guerrilla warfare and even terrorism. He grew a beard in the Castro style."<

And they did go further, murdering innocent black Africans by putting tires on their necks and setting them on fire. But Mandela was already in prison, Winnie had taken over for her husband.

Give credit where credit is do, Nelson divorced the murdering bitch. But Nelson Mendela surprised the world and did the unthinkable after being released from prison, he defended the bitch when she was brought to trial.

Remember that young white American college girl who went to South Africa to do her part to end apartheid and Winnie's ANC goon squad put a tire around her neck and set her on fire ? Remember her name ? But I'm sure you remember the incident.

I suppose it all comes down to the end justifies the means.
