Obama: Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff In Honor Of Nelson Mandela [W:382]

Mornin' LB.

Yeah.....I see. He went with a decision that tells all we are all the same, yet we are exceptional, Right? Rather than just a formal Statement of mourning.

But you do have to tend to believe......he liked the part on his discretion only. ;)

Like I said Pol, I was just looking at via the numbers and what each could bring to the table in the electoral college. Rubio would be a good choice too as VP in delivering Florida's 29 EV, but I don't think Rubio would ever accept number two. Portman or Kasich of Ohio also, but they more be too close geographically. Linc's idea of Pence is probably better. Way too far out though. I need to concentrate on 2014.

I'm glad you are concentrating on 2014! It will be interesting to see how voters feel about what's going on in DC at that time. What happens then is more important than wondering about 2016 at this point, IMO.

Exactly, The big question is can the republicans gain the senate? The house seems safely in republicans hands. But all of this is as of today.

Prognostication is my number one hobby. I think I love it more than arguing any political issue or philosophy even.

By posting this article and replying, I'm doing just that.

I'm not sure if most of the followers of Mandela or Obama know what Communism and it's history entail.

You used the phrase "antithesis of freedom" when talking about Nelson ****ing Mandela. Maybe it's your knowledge of history that is lacking.

I believe I said Communism was the antithesis of freedom and liberty. But you read it how you will.

Looks like we get to send the lovely first couple to an all expense paid trip to South Africa. Party!

After Snubbing Thatcher Funeral, Obama and Michelle to Visit South Africa for Mandela

Have you found anything genuine yet to back up the claim Mandela was a communist or do you accept your argument should go to the conspiracy theory forum?

Strange that in 70 years since he was first accused , no news sources (international / major / minor) or world leaders (international / major / minor) or anyone of any note has anything that would back you up today. All you have is a dubious passage attributed (with no verification or independent proof)

One professor associated to Amnesty International believes Mandela was once a member of the communist party but even then only as a move to further his own cause - an "opportunistic alliance" vs full blown card carrying Marxist leader.

Prove it or admit that you just made this up.

Today is Dec. 7th. Is the American flag flying outside of your house in recognition of the bombing of Pearl Harbor ?

You don't have to answerer the question publicly, just answer it for your self.

36 USC § 129 - National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

(a) Designation.— December 7 is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
(b) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation calling on—
(1) the people of the United States to observe National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities; and
(2) all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States Government, and interested organizations, groups, and individuals, to fly the flag of the United States at halfstaff each December 7 in honor of the individuals who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor.

The bigger question is, did President Obama carry out his duties as POTUS and issued that proclamation that is required under the law or was Obama again derelict in his duties as President ?

"Communists have always played an active role in the fight by colonial countries for their freedom, because the short-term objects of Communism would always correspond with the long-term objects of freedom movements."

Yahoo! News

President Barack Obama on Thursday ordered flags to fly at half-staff at the White House and public buildings, with the US in mourning over the death of "close friend" and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

Obama's proclamation, which also extended to the White House, US foreign missions, military posts, naval stations and military vessels, was valid through sunset on Monday.

"Today, the United States has lost a close friend, South Africa has lost an incomparable liberator, and the world has lost an inspiration for freedom, justice, and human dignity -- Nelson Mandela is no longer with us, he belongs to the ages," he said in the document.

"Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, he transformed South Africa -- and moved the entire world.

For a Communist? Antithesis to Freedom and Liberty?

And nothing for Maggie Thatcher...nothing

I truly want to vomit.

Regardless of politics, Nelson Mandela was a great man. He deserves being honored.

Forgive me but which ones say "I am a member of the Communist Party" or words to that effect?

The first quote may be true - but it's a general truism that any political movement seeking self aggrandisement will ally itself with a short term political struggle. Our BNP (British National Party) allies itself with any populist cause every other day in the hope it will gain votes - but it's not Mandela saying "I am a communist."

Quote 2 - Socialism is not the same as communism. Some say it's a halfway house and others disagree - but it's still not him saying "I am a communist."

Quote 3 - is not Mandela saying "I am a Communist."

Please try again.

This did not address my comment. Ray made up what he said... just to attack liberals. I called him on it and he scurried off.

Regardless of politics, Nelson Mandela was a great man. He deserves being honored.

Before 1939 Hitler was considered a great man.

Read the cover story of Times magazine "1933 Man of the Year."

But I digress.

The liberals and progressives in the world started white washing Nelson Mandela's violent pass and his suport of terrorism starting back in the 1980's. But it's kind of hard scrubbing everything from the newspapers and news magazines before Mandela became President of S.A.

Do your own search. A lot of Mandela quotes were not his. He even deffended his X-wife, Winnie Mandela and his political party's (ANC) necklace parties.

From Time magazine Dec. 17, 1990.

>"Aware of Winnie Mandela's erratic behavior in recent years, many South Africans were guessing that the once-divorced Nelson might give his wife the shove following his release from prison. Not so. With Winnie facing trial in February on kidnapping and assault charges, Nelson is now springing to her defense."<

Time magazine Aug. 6 1990

>" Thought communism was dead? Not in South Africa, where the party is unashamedly resurrecting itself -- to the evident horror of President F.W. de Klerk. Last week the government arrested at least seven party activists, charging them with plotting to stage an armed insurrection by the African National Congress if negotiations to draft a new nonracial constitution fail..."<

Again, what communist policies did he enact once he became president?

It isn't just 'liberals and progressives' most of us defend Nelson Mandela and his legacy. It isn't 'conservative' to be in that incredibly tiny minority. It's just wrong. People are willing to excuse and avoid passing censure on the activities of South African militant groups because of the struggle they were engaged in and the enemy they fought.

I don't know why I bothered responding to your wholly irrelevant post.

I beleive Nelson Mandela is deserving of the honor of flying the flag at half mast. He was a great man who did great things for his country. We need more world leaders like him.

Hitler didn't voluntarily give up power or forgive anyone that wronged him. This is the wrong guy to rail against, dude. Sometimes you just have to recognize the nobility in a person you disagree with on some issue.
