Where is the world's most corrupt nation? - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are seen as the most corrupt nations in the world, according to Transparency International's latest survey, released Tuesday.
More than two thirds of the 177 countries included in the 2013 Corruption Perceptions Index scored below 50, where 0 indicates the country's public sector is seen as highly corrupt and 100 as very clean.
Denmark and New Zealand performed best with scores of 91. Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia tied last with 8 points each.

The Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 serves as a reminder that the abuse of power, secret dealings and bribery continue to ravage societies around the world. The Index scores 177 countries and territories on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). No country has a perfect score, and two-thirds of countries score below 50. This indicates a serious, worldwide corruption problem. Hover on the map above to see how your country fares. -

Hmmmm....something sorta interesting about the top of the list...

Quite frequently those countries make "top of the list" in numerous categories.

They also tend to inspire some very unattractive, accusatory taunts from many highly conservative types....

In before the hacks on both sides suggest it's the US because of Obama or the Republican house.

partisan flame war!! Woohoo

Looks like you have to go down to #18 to get to a country over 100,000,000 population. You get down to #9 before you reach a country over 20,000,000 people.

Here is an unpleasant one. You have to go down to #18 at Japan and 19 at Uruguay to get to a country that isn't either predominantly white or a part of the former British Empire. Congratulations to Barbados for scoring so high.

Please do not misunderstand me. I think that TI is very important and does a good job. But having looked at the methodology behind the Corruption Perceptions Index a number of years ago I concluded that it can be misleading. When I looked at it, I remember asking the head of FT's office in Frankfurt about the amount of corruption in Germany. He said it was low. At the same time, he did not know that there were 1.300 cases of real estate corruption in court in the the State of Hesse alone. In other words he would have answered on his perception as a prominent information worker in the city, where the largest number of court cases were occurring. The perception among Germans was that Germany was corruption free and they continuously moralized about the corruption in far away countries they only knew as tourists like Italy. At the same time, if you asked an Italian, he would always say that Italy was corrupt. So if you asked the Frankfurt German journalist or his guest, if his country was corrupt, you would find he said no. The Italian, on the other hand, would have said his country was corrupt. Now this is real stuff, but it is not representative.

ITS TEH U.S. BECAUSE OF OBUMMER AND OBUMMERCARE!!!!1one

From everything I've heard, Zimbabwe under Mugabe is as corrupt as it gets.

Bottom three: Somalia, North Korea, Afghanistan. Well, that really puts a damper on my planned vacation next year.

"What are three corrupt countries that have never been in my kitchen?"

I thought this was kind of interesting, but then again it is perception. Those countries doing poorly just dont have a good PR department, that and other countries do a good job with the smear campaigns.

I always figured the old eastern bloc would take the cake. See, you do in fact learn a new thing everyday

The usual suspects.

I disagree that it has anything to do with perception, only an insane person would claim that North Korea is not that much more corrupt then Denmark if they would just have a better PR department or that it was just down to perception.

Corruption can be many different things, manifested in many different ways.

Let me be more specific. When I was a kid in the 60's, and gramps posted me outside a polling station in coal country West Virginia, giving out a bottle of Jim Beam or a crisp 20 so long as you voted straight ticket Democratic, was that corrupt?

Little help here, because I have been a lot of places much worse than that, including where they sell their daughters.

Absolutely...

The articles headline stated it was which country is perceived to be the most corrupt.

My first thought was Mexico. Corruption in Mexico is just standard business operating procedure. It being the norm there, is it still considered corruption or just standard business practice?
