HPD responds to accusations of racial profiling with Oklahoma teen, dancers

The mother is a moron.

I absolutely agree. The girl is 13 years old. If she has talent and was seeking to make a dance video, then why wasn't her moron mother accompanying her to do just that? Instead she sent along documentation. Wow how maternal. It is a friggin 7 and a half hour drive from Tulsa to Houston. The article stated it was a full day of "rehearsal" so there is no way that would be a round trip that could be completed in a 24 hour stint which begs to ask what were the motel sleeping arrangements? . This 13 year old minor had crossed the border with two adult men obviously not her parents. With the problem in many major cities over teen prostitution working under pimps, teen run aways, I think it was wise for the cop to check it out. For cripe sakes, the car they were traveling in had Oklahoma plates! For the cop to describe the men as being black when talking to the moron mother isn't racist. It was done to describe the men her daughter was with and skin color happens to be part of the description. If she had happen to be black and the two adult young males accompanying her were white the call to the mother would have been the same just the color of skin changed in the description.

If they really said the quote "Do you realize that your daughter is with 2 black men?" then there is a pretty clear indicator of their motivation. Why were they concerned she was with 'two black men'? Wouldnt it be equally disconcerting if they were concerned about her welfare if she were found at 3AM with two white men? Or two green men?

Now...all that being said...I can certainly see where there might be a level of concern. As a parent, I would be grateful for the phone call. the part that DOESNT make a ton of sense is that even after the parents spoke with the police, faxed copies of their licenses, confirmed everything they still werent convinced. Thats a little...weird.

Why would there ever be a phone call if the girl was just dancing?

If the girl was acting like she didn't want to be with the men, that would be one thing, but if everybody was acting normally, why should the police even look twice at that?

Where were these three dancing?

Edit: I see from the article they were heading back from rehearsal and stopped for gas. The police treated the girl like a criminal even after they knew everything was fine and she was safe. They decided the girl was not safe with these two men even after seeing all the documentation. This is just crazy. It is now criminal to be a 13 year old girl out after a certain hour. Who decided that?

In Houston. Look...the parents said they appreciated the phone call. The girl and both the guys said they understood the concern about a 13 year old from another state being in a car with two men at 3 AM. The stop and expression of concern...great job...bonus points. But...the whole 'black' thing and then the refusal to accept the parents word...thats just...weird.

Sometimes Abby Lee Miller takes a few of the girls to the dance competitions without their mom. Should the same thing happen to those girls if they come in contact with a police officer? Can a non-family member ever take care of a minor child anymore or will the police decide who the child can be with and who that child cannot be with?

The they handcuffed the girl and took her to CPS which is essentially jail.

If this was for her safety, why the handcuffs?

Can minor children ever go on an overnight field trip with the school again?

They will be with non-family members and what if a cop decides the kids are in danger with the teacher that is taking care of them?

What if Miley Cyrus was with her older manager on the road and they stopped for gas at 3AM?

How can a cop decide after all documentation has been had that they girl was in danger?

The sexual abuse of a minor female often takes place while the child is in the care of a family member

That is true. These two men had a notarized letter giving them custody for the weekend. A parent or relative was not needed.

Most cities have a curfew or at least they did when I was a kid.

I'm going to cut the cops some slack here. First they saw a 13 year old white girl with two black men at 3am. That just looks suspicious and needs checked out. Then the mom says it's fine no problem but if I was a cop I would now be suspicious of the two men and the mom.

In Miley's case, I'd be more concerned for the manager.

13yo girl out at 3am, yeah I would consider that a problem, regardless of who she was with, in most circumstances.

So there is never a reason have a 13 year old out at 3AM?

What would you have done after being presented with the documentation?

Does a notarized letter not mean anything anymore?

Do human traffickers usually have notarized and original birth certificates with them for the girls under their control?

Didn't say never, didn't say the other stuff either.

But he raises a good point.

A notarized document and consent over the phone is enough to let them go.

If you actually believe in following the law, rather than conspiratorial suspicion.

Not arguing with that either. Just sayin', a 13yo girl out at 3am with two men not her parents would initially look problematic to me also.

In another article covering this story, it included more information.
Saturday night, when the group, exhausted from their work, stopped off at nearby gas station.

“We were on the GPS trying to figure out where the hotel was. And we sat there and we dozed off.”

So here you have a car with Oklahoma license plates, parked in a gas station parking lot with two men who happen to be black and a young white girl, sleeping in the car at 3:00 AM in downtown Houston. This doesn't sound like a case of profiling but rather a gas station attendant or someone else calling the police and reporting it. If they couldn't figure out where the motel was, why didn't they call and get directions or ask the gas station attendant? And then there is something else. There are local ordinances in Houston and most cities that hotels do not book rooms to minors. The mother is an idiot.

Add to that the police being provided with the story that they are her dance coach and partner for hip hop, backing it up with a number to call with a female voice on the other end vouching for behavior no sane parent would vouch for these days, and you have what appears to be the Elizabeth Smart Story all over again.

I can see CPS keeping her for an extra day to ensure there was no pimp/child slavery action going on. Just one dumb set of parents.

Well, here's the deal. If her dance instructors had been white, would people be talking about pimping and drug dealing in this thread? Of course not. I rest my case.

Yeah, that's where you're wrong, the story would still sound hinkey. However, had it not been hip hop and two fellows in hip hop dress (and most likely speech), the story might have sounded a bit more plausible (regardless of color). But even then, you have to admit, the story sounds too close to other abduction and human traffiking stories to be ignored as normal, safe behavior. When a 13yr old is involved, it was good the officers and CPS took the time to check out the story.

Your case fails.

If it was a case like that, the girl would tell the police when taken aside.

Did it not matter she told them the situation then the police verified it?

Are they saying the girl was in on the human trafficking, if that is what it was?
