Seattle Restaurant Ejects Customer Wearing Google Glass

I find it remarkable, really, that young people feel that simply because technology is growing into areas that allow people to surreptitiously be creeps as opposed to overtly being creeps, that suddenly being a creep is now okay and everyone just has to go with the flow and get used to it. A creep is still a creep, regardless of the method, period.

I gotta agree with that.

And maybe their putting your daughter through facial recognition algorithms in preparation for raping her, while looking up her address. Maybe you need to stop trying to bull**** your way through this debate, acting like it's all the same thing.

Until they actually do any of that, its called the 1st amendment. Oh, and it all can be done on a smart phone held in your hand. What is the difference?

In Florida it is a criminal offense to do an audio recording of anyone unless they first give express permission to do so.
Yet you are fine with police officers being recorded and videoed during the commission of their duties.

This difference is the owner doesn't like it.

Besides being completely over the top and uncalled for, how do facial recgonition algorithms help you rape anyone?

Wait until O'Keefe gets a Google glass to make his next video. Suddenly the outrage will switch sides.

No doubt filming someone without their knowledge etc is creepy, but at some point we have to acknowledge and face reality, which is that the technology is getting do small, inconspicuous , and integrated in to our lives that at some point you will no longer be able to stop it.

And to be frank, it's not just other people you need to be worried about, it's your government as well. Look at the NSA thing . That's not an aberration, that's the brave new world. You think you're anonymous online? Think again.

So the question is, do we bitch and complain about it, or do we adapt and thrive. I vote adapt and thrive.

Technology is normally a good thing but it does have a tendency to change the world. Violently, even brutally sometimes, but if history has taught us one thing it's never be on the wrong side on the fence when it comes to embracing a sweeping new technology.

As long as the reason is not against the law, such as discriminatory, in WA St a business owner can ask someone to leave their business for any (legal) reason.

It's not breaking the law to enter with, say, no shoes or a gun or Google glasses, but to refuse to leave when asked is trespassing...which is a crime.

I really thought that they might not be able to just ban whatever they want. I thought that if sued, they would have to prove in court that they actually have a legitimate reason for doing so.

You're assuming he was filming. Did the article state this?
What other reason exists for wearing them? Did the article state he was NOT filming?

It's a private business, they can have such policies.

Don't understand why stories like this have to turn into massive outrages.

If it were me I'd just me like "Ooooooookay, I'll take my money elsewhere then".

Now this does not apply to innate traits such as being gay or black so don't be misunderstandin.

Whats the difference of walking in with a news paper or magazine? I don't think you can be kicked out of a restaurant for reading a newspaper.

Not familiar with the whole story by prohibiting pictures and video inside your business is well within your legal means and doesn't violate anybody rights.

Now i dont know if this guy was just kicked out, or asked to take the glasses off and he refused or he was banned etc and theres probably a good tact a buisness could practice but besides that i dont see anything wrong here.

Have to look into it more.

Oh, cant touch the sacred cows of race and sexual orientation.

Because tiny-minded internet morons have nothing better to do than stick their noses in situations that are none of their business.

If any restaurant promises to toss any person out of their restaurant who talks on a cell phone, they'll get all of my business.

A guy pointing what is effectively a video camera at everyone continuously? Throw the bum out. If someone was continuously recording people with a cell or smart phone? Throw that bum out too.

Personally, I'd prefer a restaurant that prohibited people using cell phones inside. What to chatter with people not there? Go outside. Many basically shout into their phones - I suppose to make SURE everyone else hears.

I also think a business assuring privacy would be desirable to some people.

I was thinking that too, but then I thought what's the difference between that and people who are just loud talkers in general? I don't really care if someone is on their phone as long as that person is not with me. Obnoxious people will be obnoxious whether they have a phone or not.

See my post #167. Are you going to ban loud talkers too? What about people who blow their noses? That is the MOST rude and disgusting thing to do inside of a restaurant IMO. How about we ban the nose blowers?

No, I'm not. But the same law that protects one protects the other. People who operate a business like a restaurant or a store are offering a general invitation to the public to come in and do business. The operator cannot revoke that invitation without cause. Neither race nor wearing a pair of classes constitute that cause.

But they're not a pair of glasses. Just because they're called "Google Glasses" doesn't make them glasses.

They are not being refused service because of their appearance. They are being refused service based on their behavior.

The restaurant owner. Ridiculous to throw someone out over a piece of benign tech.

I got kicked out of Walmart as a kid cause my friends and I brought in a little camcorder. Didn't even do anything yet. Business owner can disallow the use of cameras on property.

Good luck without a directional mic. Next.

I didn't say that the iphone came with Dolbe Surround Sound super hi-tech AccuraRecordingTM technology, but if I want to record you surreptitiously, your ass is getting recorded. Denying this is just silly. You want to pretend that the Google Glasses is somehow utterly unique recording technology, and I'm telling you you're living in a dream world. Seriously, just play around with your own smart phone some day next time you're in a public place and experiment with the recording technology -- you'll be surprised at how well you'll do.

Yet you have no problem with people videoing cops. Hmm.

I agree that a business owner should be able to prevent people from videotaping his/her customers. I don't see that as being a violation of anyone's right. I may not have the right to expect privacy while out in public, but as a business owner a person should be able to have some control over that regarding the restaurant, but I can't really see this applying to cell phones and other such things that a person might need for work purposes.

I was at a Christmas fair last night with one of my daughters and it was rather loud. I tried to carry on a conversation with her at the petting Zoo but really couldn't understand a word she was saying. When we got home I played back the video I had taken with my phone at the petting zoo and was amazed that while neither of us could hear each other the phone clearly recorded both sides of the conversation. It went something like this:

Me: "What kind of Animal are you petting?"
Her: "It's a Llama."
Me: "No, I think that is a Llama."
Her: "Oh, I thought it was a Llama."

Cops are public servants. Customers in restaurants are not.
