U.S. military authorities dispatched the first of six top-tech submarine-hunting jets to its Okinawa post near the disputed East China Sea, a move sure to ratchet up tensions among China and the United States.

The Navy plans to send in a total of six P-8 Poseidon patrol craft, aimed at bolstering the United States’ ability to root out submarines in the area, Reuters reported. The deployment was planned months ago, but nonetheless comes as China declared an air defense zone above islands that it’s fighting Japan to control.

President Obama, in response to the declaration, flew in two B-52 bombers into the so-called off-limits air space — a strong message that the United States would not abide China’s terms of designation. But Mr. Obama also said that U.S. businesses would obey China’s air zone declaration, and refrain from flying private craft into the zone without Beijing’s permission.

Anyone think Obama actually has a hand in this or is he leaving it up to the military?

Like most Presidents, I'm sure he's considering the input of the National Security Council including Vice-President Biden, Secretaries Kerry and Hagel, National Security Adviser Rice, CIA Director Brennan and top military leaders.

Of course, point man in the region is Four Star General Vincent K. Brooks, Commanding General U.S. Army, Pacific who I'm sure is the guy coming up with all the mission strategy, etc. and has studied, probably knows the Chinese military capabilities better than anyone and has every detail figured out even in a worse case scenario and how we'll respond. At one point the Navy was basically trying to find a reason not to scrap ASW programs, so my guess is they are trying to breath new life into the budget for such equipment and personnel.

Imagine what we might do if our president were not a wussy appeaser.

or, maybe that characterization is inaccurate, could that be?

Well I sure hope the P-8's can fill the shoes of the P-3 Orion's. Has a P-8 ever been able to locate a submerged sub ?

Not to many months ago the current administration sent to sea a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) "Little Crappy Ship" on it's first combat cruise and it's only gun didn't even work. Then the LCS broke down half way to it's AOR.

The Air Force said that the two B-52's that flew over the disputed islands was a routine training mission that was planned well before China declared air space as restricted. Who do you believe ? The Air Force who answerers to Obama or the Obama White House ?

Obama absolutely made the final decision to approve this. Nothing this important got decided at a lower level.

Who do we believe about what? For us to believe a side there has to be two sides...

Don't get it. You think they're unqualified?

Just not all second rate but yes, unqualified.

The entire Obama administration is second rate.

If Obama were have surrounded himself with competent people, he might have turned out being a half ass President.

As for General Vincent K. Brooks, I would have to look into if he's a "yes man" that Obama put in command. You are aware that Obama has been purging the U.S. military officers corps of high ranking officers (197 since last month) who were known as highly competent warriors and replacing them with PC yes men.

You would think the Air Force were saying the same thing as the White House.

The day after the B-52's flew into the contested airspace the Air Force said it wasn't a response from the Obama White House but was a training mission that was planned many months ago.

Now the spin is, it was Obama's response to the Chinese.

Who do you believe ?

Obama better be careful. Not to many months ago Obama got into a stare down with Vladimir Putin over Syria and Obama blinked.

I don't think Obama wants to get into a stare down with China's Xi Jinping. I don't think he blinks.

It's kind of a mixed bag. We are not altering our military patterns, but unlike Japan, we're telling our commercial airliners to comply with China's flyover identification demands, which are typically only enforced over sovereign territory.

I don't believe the White House has given any alternative commentary on the B-52 flyover. If you have text of something different feel free to link it.

Being as objective as possible, you don't think your negative assessment of the NSC is influenced by your political leanings? I see decades of experience in the US Senate including service on the Foreign Relations Committee, military combat, Purple Hearts, career intelligence officer, career diplomat.

I don't know if the White House said one thing or the other, but I read something similar to APACHERAT's reference on NBC's website last week.

U.S. bombers fly over disputed island chain without informing China - Behind The Wall

From a Pentagon spokesman:
This was a "long-planned training exercise," and the U.S. did not inform the Chinese of their flight plan, Warren said.

In the first paragraph of the article linked in the OP

The deployment was planned months ago, but nonetheless comes as China declared an air defense zone above islands that it’s fighting Japan to control.

Nothing to discuss here really, if we did not continue with this deployment, that could have potentially been construed as reacting to the Chinese "air defense zone". This is just continuing with business as usual, the deployment would have occurred regardless of recent developments.

It's a routine deployment. VP squadrons have been operating out of Okinawa for years.

At one point the Navy was basically trying to find a reason not to scrap ASW programs, so my guess is they are trying to breath new life into the budget for such equipment and personnel.

The MiC would just lurrrv another cold war for sure.

Funny you mentioned that because the "Five" were alluding to that very subject as a way for the WH to get back in a good public light.

A WAR.

Just what the south china sea needs....

Just what the south china sea needs....

The South China sea needs stabillity, and your'e not going to get that by letting the Chinese make arbitrary threats against one of our allies.

Some times a show of force is the best diplomacy there is.

Backing off and taking an aggressors at their word is a clear path to failure.

NK would be a great example of that.

Why would General Brooks be on point and not Admiral Locklear. Seems like a theater commander would be on point rather than a component commander within that theater. But perhaps your vast knowledge of the workings of government may have more updated information.

so stabillity to you is sending more ships, subs etc into that region?

so stabillity to you is sending more ships,
subs etc into that region?

Definitely. Just like sending ships into the Taiwan Straight is a stabilizing action.

Personally, I think we're just too young of a race of people, too immature to work out our differences minus some show of force.

And even with the use of military force.

China doesn't want a war with the US, why would they want to isolate their primary consumer ? They are under an enormous amount of pressure to keep a few hundred million Chinese citizens employed, and any military action against Japan, would lead to a profound domestic crisis for them as the US followed through with their pledge to protect our ally.

Plus, the United States Navy is a massive and highly technological fleet whos mere existence can make the difference between conflict and peace.

My oldest is in the Navy and assures me that the American public will be apprised of some of their latest technology, in say 20 years or so.

So they should "use"it. You cant be naive enough to think that we've evolved to the point socially, where Trust is an option in situations like this.
