Blockbuster is closing the doors

I am not sad to see them go. It's the same for any kind of medium...8-tracks, beta, laserdisc, cassettes, VHS. I'm wondering what is going to make DVD and Blue-ray bite the dust. On the other hand, I am glad to see vinyl start to make a comeback.

The only thing that sucks about VHS is there were a good handful of movies that never transitioned to DVD/Blue-ray since they went out of print.

Platforms like Vudu. 100% digital, streamed to any device you own. I have a Vudu account, and can watch any movie I have on there (which, granted, isn't many right now) on my TV, my laptop, my desktop, my kindle, my tablet or my iPhone. Any time. It's hard to not like watching movies that way.

You can also rent from the library. And if it's a movie you really like, there are ways to convert it for future watching.

Yep.... I can get anything I want....

The second a movie comes out it's online and can be downloaded in 5 minutes..... Just saying...

Someone mentioned Slingbox to me many years ago. There isn't enough quality programming on tv/cable where I would get much use out of it, but that is an alternative for tv to avoid Hulu and the like. I used to have a PC I could access outside the home for my stored mp3s/movies, but I never ended up using it. That is also an alternative.

I hear you there. Watch out for the MPAA. I received a notice from them once for obtaining a movie they had flagged. You need to be careful who and where you get your stuff from.

Back in the 70's they actually had a "vinyl movie player".....

I understand.... I know a site where I can just stream it, I could download it if I want from numerous sites...

My Brother got popped too - the internet provider sent like (seriously) 100 letters to my house lol.

That would have literally scared me to death.

LOL, I've seen a lot more terrifying things in my life than comcast lol....

You must have been with UVerse!

No, seriously - its not so much Comcast - it's what they're attached to. I'd hate to know the Feds were coming after me because I didn't want to drop a couple of bucks on a movie rental.

You can bet they're spying on you (and me) for sure....

:( This is sad to me. I mean, sad in an "all the brick and mortar video stores are gone, now" way. Not sad in a "You bastards made fun of Movie Gallery when we closed, so karma is a bitch" kind of way.
The last in my city Blockbuster closed last year and the last Movie Gallery was gone a couple years ago. Can't say I miss Blockbuster since I hadn't been there in decades. I racked up over $20 in late fees when I was a teenager and just stopped going there.

There's still a Family Video about a mile down the street though, which is really convenient.

But usually if I want to see something that isn't on Netflix I just borrow DVDs or Blu-Rays from the public library. They've got a much larger selection than any video rental store I've ever been to, along with a searchable database online. Plus it's free. The only downside is that the library is closed at night and on Sundays.

The market for movie rentals has been dead for a decade.

To be quite honest, I'm stunned Blockbuster lasted as long as it did. I figured it would have shuttered or gone online-only within a year of Netflix hitting the scene.

The only thing Blockbuster had going for it over Netflix was a more diverse selection, but even that can't counter the convenience of Netflix. I'll happily watch Netflix's selections over going to a Blockbuster, and I literally have a Blockbuster store less than half a mile from my house.

Damn skippy, I've taken out many movies from the public library (where I live has an amazing PL system), and if you're late, it's what ... 10 cents a day?

Honestly, I completely forgot about the library. I never go there anymore since I got the Kindle, but I forgot they have movies there, too.

Here there is a 10 movie limit at one time and they are due back in 7 days and the late fee is 50 cents/day/title.

I get movies there all the time. And there is a branch only about a mile and a half from my house. I haven't used it yet, but there's also a branch about 6 miles away from here that has a "MEDIA BOX" vending machine where you can pick up new releases 24/7. However, the library rules are slightly different for the media box movies. For instance, if you click a hold on a movie that's at the media box and you don't pick it up within 24 hrs then you lose your hold on that item. Also, the limit is 7 movies and you can't renew movies/books that you get from the media box.

It appears that in many locales the library is going to be the only place you can pick-up DVDs without buying them because Blockbuster is the only rental place left.
