Insurance for the young could be less than $50 a month

You shouldn't be using insurance for check ups and preventative services at all in the first place. You should be paying cash out of pocket for that.

Insurance companies found that by providing check ups and preventative services at a reduced price or for free, they encourage the people on the policy to use those services. Those services promote better health which costs less for the insurance companies then the not having those benefits. Without those benefits in the plan, people wait until it is too late and the care is more expensive then the preventative measures that would have provided early detection or avoidance of the disease all together.

"Obama says his plan will "lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year," partly through the use of electronic records. But experts say large savings from health IT are unlikely to flow to consumers."

Obama’s Inflated Health “Savings”

He only repeated it over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over.....

But you don't recall....yeah right. :cool::roll:

It's hard not to ignore trolls or close-minded ignoramuses who are incapable of changing their minds.

You basically spelled it out with simple logic.

Obama made the following claims: You can keep your health insurance if you like it and healthcare costs will go down. Remember his whole "What would you do with an extra $2500" Twitter campaign?

Now that has been determined to be a mathematical lie, the counterarguments are "You're not typical" (i.e. manipulating language to make it look Obama didn't lie even when there is video proof) and "factual" opinions.

According to them, when you buy insurance and insurance helps pay for your care, you are being "subsidized" by the insurance company so a higher deductible means you are paying more of YOUR share of your healthcare costs. It's as if they don't know the definition of insurance--you pay in so that when a catastrophe happens, they pay you an amount that offsets it. It is by no means "free". The amount of delusion is untenable, and the unfortunate reality is that more "education" will probably make them more annoying and even less analytical and logical.

Lets get this website up and running to make it a lot easier to apply for these plans.

Right. And they need 2.7 million out of those 2.9 million to sign up. So they have 1.9 million of those covered, but how about the other 800,000 people? How are you going to convince them to sign up for bare bones healthcare that they probably will never need and expect them to pay $200-500 a month?

Right!

The concept is that the health insurance that had been sold to many people was terrible. Mini med plans, plans with carved out coverages, very low caps, etc.

Now there are ACA standards, people will be migrated to better, and often cheaper, insurance plans, and we should see MUCH LESS financial ruin from bad insurance.

You don't go bankrupt because you have to pay your dedectible. You go bankrupt because you get care you're not covered for.

LOL. People were not going bankrupt because they had to pay for their own birth control pills or other such nonsense that has increase the cost of health insurance and raised the deductible that people will be held responsible for. Whats on the market now because of Obanadont'care is junk insurance for millions of people. It's in fact terrible because it will force millions off the roles of the insured and drive the cost through the roof for the rest.

So as it is now, people will go bankrupt because they lost their health insurance due to Obamadon'tcare or go bankrupt because they can't pay the massive deductible due to Obamadon'tcare. Lose, lose for Americans.

I know! How about advertising and publicizing the plans!

Oh wait. The House GOP killed that.

Hey - How about having the entire HHS organization work together on making this rollout successful?

Oh wait. The GOP has been filibustering nominations for top posts for years, and between fighting it in court and forcing the HHS department to do much more work than was initially planned (note that ideally they wanted 50 state exchanges), its been unecessarily difficult.

Hey! Lets get organizations like the NFL to directly publicize the ACA to their fan base!

Oh, wait. The GOP threatened the NFL to not get involved in 'divisiveness'. And they back down.

Gee. I wonder why the success of this program seems to be hitting such a rocky road??

GOP’s Obamacare conspiracy: Sabotage from the inside - Salon.com

I know! How about getting most of the states to run their own state ACA websites which turn out to be much better run than the federal one!

Oh wait. The GOP legislatures/governors in 30 states rejected that idea.

All the advertising in the world won't get nearly a million people to pay $200-500 a month for bare bones health care. Do you really think people are so gullible?

Yet it's not bare bones health care, and it looks to be substantially less than that price.

Apparently, you would benefit from the advertising, since you are so clearly misinformed!

I do love hearing the contradictions:

Conservative 1) the coverage is terrible and expensive!

Conservative 2) yes! And it pays for so many things I don't need!

So the ACA sucks because they couldn't advertise it? That's rich. And how is that individual state exchanges working out? That's right, 85-90% of signups are going to Medicaid. Those states will be thanking their elected officials come 2015 when the bill is due.

Make sure you put your tin foil hat on tonight or the eevil GOP will invade your brain and convince you your premiums are going up. Just make sure not to check your mailbox.

My premium went up $3/mo. Since I, like 80% of people, get employer based insurance, I kept the policy that I had.

I used my AARP Supplental Medical Ins. today - paid $50 towards my visit.
I got a physical, refills on my thyroid med, EKG, blood test, and will do stool samples for colon cancer.

I don't know what the lab cost, for the stool sample will be , but the whole thing costs me around $200.

I go back in 6 months for the same proceedure (except the EKG ).
Now tell me why this isn't an effective cheap insurance that matches my needs??

I am going to make some assumptions here.

You are over 65.

You could participate in Medicare.

Your AARP membership is then rewarded by the government who pays a premium for each individual off Medicare and on the AARP card. Your AARP insurance is known as a Medicare Advantage Plan. AARP gets your PART A premium that you paid for with Social Security and Medicare taxes from your paycheck.

Am I close?

I am less the 60 years old, but close. Self employed. PAy ALL of my FICA witholdings - no matching employer contribution.

What happens when the stool sample for colon cancer comes back positive?
I do have hospitalization -catastropic coverage.

It's like asking me what happens when I get hit by a bus, or have a heart attack. Being in sales I have been pitched (attempted sales) by insurance agents.
The "what if" assumes I am going to get cancer/heart disease, etc.

I'll take my chances, so far every screening proceedure comes back negative - i do my very best to stay in shape - healthly lifestyle.

At some point I have to roll the dice, because better insurance is unaffordable.

( :) and thank you for the Kaiser site you listed - I do have some tax credits, but not to offset high premiums).

What we need to focus on is getting the young signed up, the risk pool is to small with just us older Boomers.

OK. You've given very thin information, so I looked up the AARP supplemental insurance plan, and I guess I can assume you have the supplement for hospitalization only.

Heres what it coves and heres what it doesnt:
https://www.myhospitalplan.com/assets/pdf/defs/BA25255ST_EP Definitions Brochure_Standard.pdf

The rough coverage says:
These plans pay daily fixed cash benefits for covered**:
Hospital stays
Outpatient surgery
Intensive Care Unit stays
Post hospital skilled nursing facility care

So in other words, they;ll give you a certain dollar amount for each day you are in the hospital. That doesnt mean they'll pay for everything. That means exactly what it says. You go in for colon cancer resection, they'll pay a daily rate. What that rate is is not clear, but I can guarantee it will not cover the doctors bills the surgeons fee, the anethesiologist bills, the consultant physician bills, etc, although they do say "benefits and costs vary depending upon plan selected".

Again, supplements are clearly considered to NOT be a substitute for real insurance. This is the reason why.

But lets go back to the 'what if' question. If you didnt want to know 'what if", I would assume you wouldnt bother with a test. Being in shape and having a heatly lifestyle will not prevent the cells in your colon from deciding to become neoplastic and your immune system from catching them in time. Colon cancer happens to the healthiest among us, so considering what will happen when you have a costly and catastrophic disease is EXACTLY why you carry insurance.

And Colon Cancer is not treated as an inpatient all the time. it may requite months of very expensive outpatient chemotherapy or radiation therapy that your hospital supplement is not going to cover.

You may want to consider the fact that you may not be able to NOT afford health better insurance. And yeah, going to the exchanges is going to cost you more, but thats because you functionally didnt have any real insurance in the first place (assuming my facts about the supplemental plan are correct).

And if you're the kind of person who needs that in your plan in order to get yourself checked out, then go buy that kind of plan. As an adult I don't need the trivial things covered, and so I shouldn't have to pay insurance on them.

I do love hearing the contradictions:

Conservative 1) the coverage is terrible and expensive!

Conservative 2) yes! And it pays for so many things I don't need!

It seems you are the one that is misinformed, as I have already ran through the number and I can tell you that not less than that price. 1.9 million can get it for under $100 a month after subsides for the lowest costing plan. So even assuming that those 1.9 million sign up, that still leaves the administration 800,000 people short of their goal for young enrollment. 800,000 people that they need to convince to buy bare bones coverage for anywhere from $100 a month to just barely under $500 a month for only 60% coverage with extremely limited networking. I'm betting that even with advertising, they aren't going to be able to convince people to do it. Not to mention, even if those goals are hit, they still can run into problems with an insurance death spiral. I'll assume that even if they got their 2.7 million to sign up, a vast majority of them are going to be cheap bronze plans. Fine, I don't have a problem with that. But I'm assuming that the people who consume the most healthcare are going to have a higher propensity to buy more expensive insurance. This can easily create a situation where silver and gold plans quickly become a glut of only high risk patients.

So you don't think possible that it both pays for things that you don't need and still has terrible basic coverage? Which planet are you living on? I don't care that they are bare bones healthcare plans. I think they are a great option to have. I'm just saying, I don't think you can convince people to shell out hundreds of dollars a month for it, especially those who are least likely to use healthcare.

And if you're the kind of person who needs that in your plan in order to get yourself checked out, then go buy that kind of plan. As an adult I don't need the trivial things covered, and so I shouldn't have to pay insurance on them.

It is a good business decision for you and the people in your group. If the services are offered to your group, more people in your insurance group are likely to partake in those services. In turn, the average cost of each individual on the plan is reduced since more serious and catastrophic illnesses can be avoided. This lessens your premiums. It is a win-win for everyone.

I should also mention I understand where you are coming from. I don't think you should pay for anything you don't want. If that is your decision, I think you should be able to buy a plan that doesn't cover those things.

It lowers the premiums for said cadillac coverage compared to other cadillac coverage premiums. It does not lower the cadillac coverage premium below that of basics-only coverage. I still have to pay more for things I don't want because I'm being placed in a risk group in which I don't belong. I belong in the risk group of only other people who want basics only, not placed along with people who also want their car insurance to pay for fuel and oil.
