WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration says it's granting a six-week extension until March 31 for Americans to sign up for coverage next year and avoid new tax penalties under the president's health care overhaul law.

Monday's move had been expected since White House spokesman Jay Carney promised quick action last week to resolve a "disconnect" in the implementation of the law. Technical problems continue to trouble the website that's supposed to be the main enrollment vehicle for people who don't get health care at work.
Under the new policy, people who sign up by the end of open enrollment season won't face a penalty.
Previously you had to sign up by the middle of February, so your coverage would take effect March 1.
The extension is for 2014 only.

The date for sign up to avoid penalties is unchanged. The enrollment deadline has been pushed back a month.

The only way they can delay the actual mandate is if they kick everyone off the exchange policies they purchased. Should only affect about a dozen people.

This doctor was telling people on the 4th. Now with the New Problems that came about yesterday with the Obamacare Site. Obama will end up having to push it back even more. Now even more Democrats are coming out to call for a delay on the mandate.

President Obama will delay his health insurance mandate.....

A current protestation aside, President Obama is going to have to delay the individual mandate that penalizes consumers for not carrying health insurance under Obamacare. The President can’t force people to have healthcare coverage when they can’t even purchase it on the law’s signature exchanges.

Despite the Obama Administration’s refrain that the IT woes are a sign of heavy web traffic, or are just temporary glitches, the problems are far more systemic. They are unlikely to be soon resolved.

The issues are unlikely to be mere coding errors, but stem from the way the modules are constructed to speak to different systems and networks.

This is especially true when it comes to communicating with the state Medicaid systems, which are often decades behind current IT standards. Some are still operating on the COBOL programming language.

It is likely that large chunks of this middleware will need to be re-written, or was never firmly in place form the start.

HHS boasts about the web traffic that the exchanges have garnered. A lot of those hits must be Washington journalists and curious politicos. Because the embarrassing truth, which is seeping out of insurers, is that enrollment rates in many states are running in the single digits.

In the meantime, President Obama is going to have to suspend his individual mandate, despite his political positioning in the current budget battles. People can’t be fined for not having something that they can’t purchase.....snip~

Looks like Obama is not having a smooth start to his second term.....Karma maybe?

Our great king has grant us reprieve from the great mandate, so millions will die for lack of funding to pay their healthcare.

Does this mean they compromised on the Debt Ceiling?

A new website has some glitches and conservatives almost wet themselves over the hope that it will stop a major piece of medical insurance reform. It's almost pitiful.

The website will be fixed, ACA will be a success in getting millions of Amercans covered at similar prices for employer plans, and the rightwing noise machine will move on to the next pseudo-problem.

Looks like you were left out of the loop as they had more problems Sunday. Which they now said has to deal with more than just glitches. Has more to do with.....not knowing anything about how to run and or set up a Business. So it looks like it will take even longer than Obama's extended 6 week delay.

Isn't it great that now more and more Democrats are calling for Obama to delay his Signature legislation, and now are questioning Obama on anything he says out of his mouth.

Yeah, because it's impossible to fix a website, and ACA is nothing more than a website.

Jesus, what will conservative have to talk about 6 months from now when ACA is running fine and the number of uninsured drops precipitously?

Agenda 21 or something like that.

No, this was your meme. You ****in brought it up. No liberal has ever said a delayed mandate will cause the deaths of millions. You are the only person to ever suggest this. You, alone, own this "meme."

So, if delaying a mandate for six weeks causes the deaths of millions, what about the GOP's attempt to delay it a year?

No, but the left has implied that without Obamacare, billions of minorities, women and children will die. Therefore, a delay will naturally cause the same thing.........thus, the leftwing meme. On the other hand, the GOP doesn't believe Obamacare is worth a damn, and therefore delay is good for everyone.

That part about not knowing how to run a business. Puts that website all into perspective. As well as how much Obamacare is a Ponzi scheme. Looks like he still needs the money and the young people. Who just aren't making that showing for him. It's okay you can start saying Fail.

How does that change the fact of the Democrats are no longer JUST believing anything that comes out of Obama's Mouth?

I think you know where this puts Obama for the rest of his term. 5 years of lies. Now the Democrats are scrambling to save themselves in this up and coming 2014 Election.

Looks like the Teflon Coating has come undone. Can't say.....it has been fast enough. But it has come.....and it is reality that Obama will have to deal with it as his popularity continues to plummet.

Next time.....don't bet on that long shot. It's just like that lottery ticket. Remember one has to work for what they want in life. The Free Ride was never part of the solution.

On what legal authority is it "being delayed"?

How can they just pick and choose which laws to follow and which to just kick down the road just bc they feel like it?

Because the sheep of America think that's how it's supposed to be.

Straw man gets bigger. Have fun playing with it.

The IRS can waive tax penalties for a variety of reasons.

Yes, but those generally have this thing called "Legal authority" to do so, not just a whim.

Wish there was a way to remind you of this 6 months down the road.... Btw, the only way that website will be functional at that point is if the entire thing is rebuilt from scratch without the nepotism and using competent coders.

Up to now, it's probably over 1000:1 of people that signed up for the one-way trip to mars than have signed on to Obamacare.

But, 6 months down the road, who will Obama have to blame WHEN it's still not working?

They'll blame the republicans for not throwing enough money at the problem.

Given that almost 1,000,000 (862,000) have signed up for plans under the ACA, that 1000 to one thing about going to Mars.... 1 billion people signing up for a trip to Mars thing.... what a thriving business.

Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) Health Insurance Signup Chart

I just checked out the CO site. It was quick, easy, and much lower (at first blush) in comparison to what I am paying now. My equivalent Kaiser plan for my family (Silver) looks like it will cost at $600 per month as opposed to the $2,000 I am now paying. Deductibles are comparable, co-insurance a little higher, but the out of pocket is capped at less than my current premiums.... In Colorado, at state the embraced the ACA and set up a good marketplace, this looks good. I do have to see what this will do for my employees, however.
