Democrat Manchin Breaks Ranks to Back Mandate Delay..... [W:31]

They still exist. It very often requires the farmers to live on not much more than minimum wage level salaries unless they are large operations. We have several in my area that have adopted some interesting business models like turning ponds into fish farms; the subscribe to the box o'veg clubs; and the like.

This particular farm literally is woods now. The GGP's moved out when they got old, it was sold to someone who used it as a retreat for awhile before it ended up in the hands of someone whom I was told timbered it at least once. Other than remnants of old foundations and an old well that my uncle knows where it is but I have no clue, there is nothing on it now but trees and some open spots along the water where floods have kept the trees back. I have zero interest in the place, but if having the old homestead my mom can remember as a little girl loving to visit back in the family makes her happy, I will hold onto it and hope that one day Bigfoot is spotted on the place discovering Gold or something so I can make the money back. :) Really one of my brothers wants it when he retires to build a home on, so I am going to bleed him dry when the time comes.

:funny: Good luck on both Bigfoot, and your brother!

Greetings, Fisher. :2wave:

Salutations, Polgara. If there is a Big Foot, he is bound to live in the hills of WV ;)

To stray back on topic though,as for Manchin, the sad reality is that most people outside WV would not know who he is had it not been for the Sago Mine Disaster. I question whether or not he would have even won his seat had it not been for his spiritual/emotional leadership in that sad episode. Capito v. Tennant should be an interesting Senate race next year. Two mountain ladies slugging it out will be a thing to watch. I expect the GOP to pick up Rockefeller's seat in the end.

People in my area did awesome as farmers until Clinton started the path to kill tobacco. Hell you didn't even need to farm your land--you just needed to own land with an allotment and you'd do okay as you could sharecrop or rent out your allotment.

The federal government undercut a lot of family farms that way not to mention coal. Even in Eastern KY which is a lot like WV.

It was really pointless symbolism since a lot of US grown tobacco is exported and US consumed tobacco is imported because Americans prefer lighter tobacco flavors and foreigners prefer heavier tobacco flavors.

Strange how that works. That brings up something else that very few people talk about and that is the trade deficit. We send a huge amount of money overseas creating a ton of jobs in foreign countries and helping their economy while doing just the opposite here. Not only should we be concentrating on how to handle the debt but also doing something about the trade deficit.

I like Manchin, as I have posted many times! We need more like him! One of my best friends grew up in W VA, and if those gals are anything like her, it will indeed be fun to watch!

I realize that BHO was trying to appease the greenies... who apparently want to take us back to the good old days when we didn't have electricity, but somehow we will all be able to live happily ever after without it ... but to arbitrarily shut down an industry that put a lot of people out of work wasn't the most well-thought-out move he's ever made. The coal industry has advanced, and they have the technology to insure that coal is no more dirty than any other big business these days. Odd...

As a wealthy nation it is natural that we import more than we export. The aggregate numbers are not the problem IMO. As far as I am concerned, I see the problem is that Washington will screw over whole industries to encourage the exports of a single corporation's products. "They can't afford our cars and weapons if they have no money, so here let's send them all our textiles and furniture manufacturing plants. Screw them--they are mostly in the South anyway. Damn Red Staters aren't real Americans to begin with."

I just heard on the news that Manchin, moderate Democrat is working with one of my senator's, Johnny Isakson a moderate Republican to craft a bill to delay the mandates a year. They are taking a bi-partisan approach with compromises. Now the question is since there are so many die hard's on both sides who put their parties agenda above everything else to include country, will it succeed? Does it even have a chance of success? I doubt it.

Coal is an odd issue in that state. Mountain Top removal has some real environmental consequences beyond just cutting down trees. Fortunately, the companies themselves have been moving away from that. Coal is a sporadic industry even under the best of circumstances. A miner might only work a few months here and a few months there, but they can pull in some serious cash which is like being a doctor in a rural state like that. $50-$60K a year for 6-8 months semi-skilled work is not income that will be replaced when the jobs are lost for good. There will never be anything that replaces a coal economy in parts of WV and KY.

You can add electronics to that mix too. TV's, VCR's DVD's radio's. Steel and coal industries have basically been regulated out of business here.

Well, you saw what happened with the recent bill that Senator Collins and her Dem colleague offered to end the shutdown. It was a reasonable compromise, but Reid cherry-picked it, and chose the one thing in the bill that no one wanted! Nuff said....Have they gotten wiser in a few weeks? Do pigs fly?....

I know, but was then the Democrats had the Republicans on the ropes and Reid didn't want to let them get off the ropes. purely a political ploy in my book. I heard on the radio another poll was out on the ACA, not sure whose as I can't find it on the internet, but it said 60% now think the ACA is a joke while 37% still favor it. Their words, not mine. I will keep searching.

A single man is not a sign of a trend.

Also delaying the individual mandate would be the dumbest thing that could be done with this law, worse than repealing it, since the individual mandate is a big part of what pays for the law in the first place. Its unpopular sure, but keeping your child on your insurance till he's 26, not being denied for pre-existing conditions, etc is not free.

So the folks that supposedly love the "little guy" and hate the "corporations" support postponing the mandate for those they hate, but are against postponing it for those they love.

IRONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like there are 10 Democrats that knows whats Right.....huh? ..... :2razz:

Good afternoon MMC

lol I gave you a "like" because that was funny....not because it was true. Rep. Matheson (D-UT) is one the two dems that are so far to the right that he should just call himself a republican. He probably won't win the next election because of his vote to shut down the government.

 Yeah I kinda figured. Was hoping to get a laugh out of ya and some others too. But you are Right.....he might as well be a Republican or libertarian, especially being that far over. ;)

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke ranks with fellow Democrats and said he’d support a stopgap spending plan that delays the individual mandate in President Barack Obama’s health-care law.

“There’s no way I could not vote for it,” Manchin said at a Bloomberg Government breakfast today. “It’s very reasonable and sensible.”

Manchin, 66, said he’d be willing to delay the individual mandate as part of the budget negotiations because the Obama administration in July gave businesses an extra year to provide their workers with health insurance.

“Don’t put the mandate on the American public right now,” he said. “If you know you couldn’t bring the corporate sector, you gave them a year, don’t you think it’d be fair?”

Manchin also said he’d be willing to negotiate in a debate over raising the nation’s $16.7 trillion debt limit. He said he’d support “efficiencies” in Medicare and Social Security and using most of the savings for debt reduction.....snip~

Democrat Manchin Breaks Ranks to Back Mandate Delay - Bloomberg

Uh oh.....it has begun. Democrats are coming out and wanting the Mandate delayed for the Middle Class and the Poor. Not just for the Corporate boys and Unions. Obamacare is facing all sorts of problems and now listen to the Democrats shift.

Well lets work together to take out whats bad and make it better. Are they getting ready to make more excuses for the American people or what?

At least there is one smart democrat in the country, that's a start

Just how or why would such a child not be able to get health insurance by losing his dependent status with or without a pre-existing condition? There is only one way and Obamadon'tcare didn't change that. He or she doesn't want health insurance.

You liberals have listened to democrat politicians to get your "facts" from and they are anything but facts. Most are gross misrepresentations or flat out lies from the Dems.
