U.S. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke ranks with fellow Democrats and said he’d support a stopgap spending plan that delays the individual mandate in President Barack Obama’s health-care law.

“There’s no way I could not vote for it,” Manchin said at a Bloomberg Government breakfast today. “It’s very reasonable and sensible.”

Manchin, 66, said he’d be willing to delay the individual mandate as part of the budget negotiations because the Obama administration in July gave businesses an extra year to provide their workers with health insurance.

“Don’t put the mandate on the American public right now,” he said. “If you know you couldn’t bring the corporate sector, you gave them a year, don’t you think it’d be fair?”

Manchin also said he’d be willing to negotiate in a debate over raising the nation’s $16.7 trillion debt limit. He said he’d support “efficiencies” in Medicare and Social Security and using most of the savings for debt reduction.....snip~

Democrat Manchin Breaks Ranks to Back Mandate Delay - Bloomberg

Uh oh.....it has begun. Democrats are coming out and wanting the Mandate delayed for the Middle Class and the Poor. Not just for the Corporate boys and Unions. Obamacare is facing all sorts of problems and now listen to the Democrats shift.

Well lets work together to take out whats bad and make it better. Are they getting ready to make more excuses for the American people or what?

Mancin is also who Bloomberg wants to run out of office since he backs gun legislation as well. So we may be seeing the End of Mancin come 2016.

Which I don't know if the Left counted him to make the return.

Mancin is seeking the good graces of the voters in West Virginia that have common sense. One of the problems he will have though, the same people he is courting now know he sat on the fence when the GOP was pushing for the same.

Manchin is a very level headed guy who respects the people who elected him in the first place. In a way he reminds me of Sam Nunn when Georgia was sending Democratic Senators to Washington. West Virginians are very pro 2nd amendment also, to be otherwise for the senator would be like telling them to stick it where the sun don't shine. It is refreshing to hear of a senator that actually takes the people's wishes to heart from his state. After all, he was elected to represent the people of the state of West Virginia, not the Democratic Party.

Manchin just won re-election last year, he won't be going anywhere until at least 2019. He'll be 72 then, perhaps he might retire, then again maybe not since we know some senators stayed around in their 90's. Didn't Strom Thurman celebrate his 100th birthday as a senator?

Heya Pero. :2wave: Well at least he is using some common sense.....and in pointing that out to Obama with being fair for all.

Howdy MMC, fairness rarely enters the political fray. Common sense neither. There are only a few senators who actually will put the people they represent ahead of their party. All the rest basically toe the party line or are forced to toe the party line.

Well, he knows Bloomberg is coming after his seat. So if they are Democrats there, he will be challenged.

West Virginia at the moment is just about as red as any red state can get. Manchin is a conservative democrat who just happened to win in a state where Democrats have no business winning. If Bloomberg wants his seat, I thought he was Mayor of NYC who hasn't much common sense to begin with IMO, he'll have to wait until the election in November of 2018 to challenge him.

I do not think even Senator Reid will give Manchin a hard time, Reid is a smart politician and party loyalest. He knows Machin means one vote for his continued senate leadership position and it is better to have a Manchin coming from West Virginia who will vote with the Democrats 70% of the time than a Republican coming from West Virginia who will always vote against the Democrats 100% of the time. This fact is something the Republican Party has lost track of. In choosing their senate candidate, in a few states none of the GOP party members have really given winning in the general election enough thought. Look at Indiana and Missouri last year, to a lesser extent North Dakota and Montana.

Well Bloomberg isn't going to run against him.....one of his puppets will. Just Like In California and Illinois. Now they hold those seats despite not knowing much about those states politics. If it is Red.....then that problem might get solved anyways.

Good morning MMC - I'm pretty sure this is old news - I believe Manchin made these comments or at least ones similar to them during the government shutdown and before congress passed their stopgap measure last week. He was roundly criticized by the Senate Democrat leadership and hidden away afterwards. Did he come out of hiding and say it again?

Oh, you are confused. That is called trying to work for the people who vote for you, and it is also probably called winning an election rather than driving everyone but your radicals away. I know it is a strange concept for some people on the right, but being reasonable kinduv makes people like you more. Not a lot of people like the mouthy bossy assholes. You may not have noticed that little reality with sister sarah and brother cruz screaming in your ear.

Now, now, now, I'm sure you have lots of friends - don't sell yourself short.

Yeah he did.....Oct 22nd this year, 2days ago. So it was after the display and the way he voted before.

Well, he does have it Right about giving all a fair shot and not just those Corporations, Unions and Pelosi people.....Right?

I wouldn't worry about it. I follow the senate quite closely especilly when we get close to an election. Manchin is safe and very popular. He listens to the people of West Virginia and the people of West Virginia love him for so doing. He is probably about the only Democrat that could win a statewide race there.

 Okay.....why doesn't that sound good like, to me. :lamo

Manchin isn't going anywhere. He is locked in until January of 2019 no matter what unless he dies or decides to retire early. I wouldn't worry about Bloomberg. Then there is the fact as I stated before, Reid doesn't want to lose him. Reid may not like him and Reid may want to hide him and run away from him, but Reid needs him and needs him to stay in the Democratic Party. The fact he votes in the best interest of West Virginia and her people may irritate the heck out of Reid, but he is a Democrat and he counts as one when it comes to his leadership position and Manchin can be relied upon around 70% of the time to vote with the Democrats as long as his vote doesn't go against the expressed withes of the people of West Virginia. He is a thorn in the side of Reid, but he would be the same thorn in the side of Republicans if he were to switch. He is no straight party line vote, to him he was sent to Washington to represent the people of west Virginia as a Democrat, not to represent the Democratic Party to the People of West Virginia.

By he you mean the imaginary obama sitting in the chair at the republican convention talking to clint eastwood, then yes of course.

No I meant Mancin.....as Obama hasn't backed off of anything I know of yet. Well he did move back the start date like 6 weeks. But I got that up in another thread.

Whatever, if you break him just keep the receipt because he is payed for by the banks through 2016 and we might get our money back.

A single man is not a sign of a trend.

Also delaying the individual mandate would be the dumbest thing that could be done with this law, worse than repealing it, since the individual mandate is a big part of what pays for the law in the first place. Its unpopular sure, but keeping your child on your insurance till he's 26, not being denied for pre-existing conditions, etc is not free.

What kind of ugly haters would be opposed to their fellow Americans finally having affordable health care?

Nazis or teabaggers or are they one in the same thing?

Guess you weren't up on those House Members speaking out. Like the Democrat Nolan leading the charge.....huh?

So what do you have to say about Obama delaying it for 6 weeks now?
