Senate reaches deal to end shutdown, avoid default - CNN.com

Senate leaders on Wednesday worked out a deal to reopen the government and avoid a potential U.S. default as soon as midnight, sources told CNN's Dana Bash and Ted Barrett.

Exact details of the Senate plan were not known. Nor was it clear how the Senate and House would proceed in considering the measure.
Also, not verified but...

It also would set up budget negotiations between the House and Senate for a long-term spending plan, and would include a provision to strengthen verification measures for people seeking government subsidies under Obama's signature health care reforms.

Which, I have to confess, I don't actually understand at all. But on the face of it I'm guessing it means poor people have more hoops to jump through. Shocker.

the world breathes a huge sigh of releif.

Doesn't it still have to pass the House?

Yup.

If the Senate passes an agreement, House Speaker John Boehner will probably face the decision of whether to allow a vote that he knows can only pass with virtually all Democrats and only a few of his fellow Republicans supporting it.

Hopefully Boehner allows a vote on it.

The last part is completely ridiculous though. The party who fears IRS involvement the most mandates that everyone be essentially audited.

Regardless, this can't happen ever again. The Democrats should support Boehner for speaker as long as the GOP has a numerical advantage. The Tea Party can't be allowed to have any influence. They've demonstrated that their only interest in government is in destroying it.

Well, now we know what happens when the loony tune inmates are allowed to run the GOP asylum.

It is a very short term deal. However, the Republicans were asking to discuss some policies. The Democrats were saying they would only discuss them after funding the government. Well, the government will be funded for a few months...deal away. Hopefully they do work this time.

This can be verified by Slate: Shutdown Live-Blog: Day 16

From there it says that it looks like it will make it to the house floor for a vote. Also this:

Officials said the proposal called for the Treasury to have authority to continue borrowing through Feb. 7, and the government would reopen through Jan. 15. ... In addition to raising the debt limit, the proposal would give lawmakers a vote to disapprove the increase. President Barack Obama would have the right to veto their opposition, ensuring he would prevail.
House and Senate negotiators would be appointed to seek a deficit-reduction deal, but there is no provision for federal agencies to have increased flexibility in coping with the effects of across-the-board cuts.
Despite initial Republican demands for the defunding of the health care law known as Obamacare, the pending agreement makes only one modest change in the program. It requires individuals and families seeking subsidies to purchase coverage to verify their incomes before qualifying.

Hopefully Boehner allows a vote on it.

does anyone remember why we needed to shutdown the government in the first place?

hopefully this actually makes it to a vote in the house. probably will have a bunch of **** in it that is bad for low income Americans, but that's par for the course.

They gambled with the well being of the American people, and lost.

What's incredible is that a couple ignoramuses in the tea party could threaten the well being of the American and world economy. They have to be removed from office before they push some button or other that blows something else up. Invincible ignorance paired with nihilism is just too dangerous a mix.

Yeh it is reckless and will only hurt America is the long term. While America have been shutdown China have been making moves in my own country making huge capital investments and are continuing to assert themselves as the worlds new leader, they have been calling for the world to try to start distancing themselves from the American economy and the Dollar. Hard to argue with them given the last 2 weeks.

Would any sane country want to be held hostage to the whims of the TP nutters?

And Cruz chicken-sh!ts out of filibustering after prodding the House lunatics all the while..
What a ****in poo-say Cruz is and all his supporters, using Veterans..
And now his Houston Chronicle longs for the day of Kay Bailey Hutchison with buyer's remorse.

In seriousness, how about India in the Country of my birth, dear Brit??
India is now China's biggest competitor IMHO.

Yeh and also emerging countries like Brazil

Right on with Brazil, especially with the 2016 Olympics in Rio..
Not to mention the focus on Russia with the upcoming Winter Olympics..
Reagan changed after the assassination attempt, when he gave the keys to the phony christian right, infuriating Goldwater.

Finally we can get this issue off the front pages and allow this wonderful Obamacare rollout to take over the headlines. I imagine in 6 months it will be such a train wreck iit will make the shutdown look like a pleasant memory.

And I like these libs posting like we narrowly avoided a nuclear exchange with Russia or something. Save some of your fake outrage for the next "crisis".

That meme has been busted thoroughly already (except for those ignorant souls who live by slogan alone). How many Tea Party members are in the house?

While I'm certainly no expert on congressional procedural rules, my answer to that question would be: apparently enough to matter.

Unless its more than 100, its hogwash.

What did they agree to raise the ceiling to for 4 months? I ask, because the treasury needs to reissue 400 billion in notes just to cover the "extraordinary" measures used to keep us under the ceiling since May.

Well, they did change the standing rules of the house to prevent any house member from bringing a bill (i.e. CR) to the floor...
