The practice of upfront payment for non-emergency care has been spreading in the U.S. as deductibles rise. Now, the advent of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is likely to accelerate that trend.

Many of the plans offered through the law’s insurance exchanges have low initial premiums to attract customers, while carrying significant deductibles and other out-of-pocket cost sharing. The second-lowest tier of Obamacare plans in California, for example, carries a $2,000 annual deductible.

Hospitals say they need to charge patients prior to treatment because Americans are increasingly on the hook for more of their own medical costs. And once care is provided, it’s often difficult for hospitals to collect.

wasn't Obama care supposed to keep the uninsured from flocking to the emergency rooms for any little illness?
Now it will be the insured and uninsured doing just that because they cant afford the deductibles and co-pay
so there goes another liberal talking point down the drain

Are you posting this as if it's bad news? That would be good news. Emergency rooms are ridiculously over-used. If people have to pay up in advance, they'll make an appointment with their doctor -- or, YIKES! get a family doctor.

I've had the misfortune of having to use the ER on four occasions in the last six years...for genuine pain-threshhold-ten emergencies. Somebody's there because his foot cast itches...a kid with a sore throat who's running around the waiting area...dozens of people looking just fine patiently waiting for ER care. More convenient at night is my guess. That's simply GOT to change.

Large deductibles are a good thing.

I pay $30 at the HMO, and have for a couple of years now.
That doesn't inspire me to go the the ER instead, no way.

Health care is not free, never was, and never can be.

Yet if you suggest people actually pay anything for services you use, some are just aghast at the very idea.

I think you misunderstand what's going to happen
a mother takes her sick child to a family doctor the doctor says you need to pay your co-pay and or deductible up front before you can see the doctor like the article describes. And if the mother doesn't have either she will be forced to go to the emergency room. just like before Obama care, but now that mother is out the couple of hundred a month she was forced to spend on her premiums, and still has to take her child to the emergency room over a simple illness because she doesn't have the thousands needed to pay up front to cover the deductible

My mom just told me about this. Her new doctor she was forced to have because of Obama care demands payment upfront.

Since Obamacare doesn't start till Jan 2014 it can't be the fault of the ACA or Obama.

when a hurricane is coming do you wait for it to get here before you prepare for it ?

Pregnant couple had to SELL CAR, disconnect cable because of Obamacare…

A pregnant couple in Michigan has had to sell their car and disconnect their cable because Obamacare is forcing them to pay another deductible in 2014. Normally their $5,000 deductible would expire next April, after they’ve had their first child. And they’ve already spent the $5,000 needed to fulfill that deductible. But thanks to Obamacare resetting everything in 2014, they will now be forced to come up with another deductible of $5,000 at the beginning of the new year and their pregnancy still won’t be covered 100% like it would have been under her current insurance.

stories like this are being told all over America by the thousands and it is just going to get worse as the time goes by

He didn't say there were plans to change, he said his mom was forced to change. That statement is impossible to have anything to do with ACA. It's more drama hype from drama queens. Just pointing it out.

It's not the fault of the ACA that some doctors are so stupid they think Medicare and ACA are the same or that the cuts in Medicare presented in the ACA would effect them.... well unless they were being fraudulent in their Medicare ****. They drop the patients because Medicare controls costs. The thing I keep reading all you conservatives think Obamacare doesn't do, and then you bitch when one little section about controling costs for Medicare which taxpayers pay pretty much directly because the doctors behave greedily.

you most not have read any of my links. im sick of wasting my time with you ideologues. they are decreasing the amount of Medicare reimbursement up to 27% because of Obama care it is in the ACA law
So how in the hell can you separate the two when it is written in the ACA law

Yes, cost controls. I thought that's what everyone agreed was needed? Now you're saying the greed of doctors trumps all. Go figure. Y'all just like bitching like a bunch of teen drama queens.

ya those greedy ass doctors. why should they make more than a car mechanic? forget that they had to pay hundreds of thousands on schools and 6 years of learning and training and the tens of thousands they have to pay for malpractice insurance

If they'd had any sense they would have kept the previous insurance plan until April. The tax penalty for doing this would have been ~$30. And that is income-dependent, if they're selling a car to pay a deductible I suspect they're not subject to the mandate in the first place.

It's a sad state of affairs that a post like this can actually be the post of reason.

Cant do video at work. So you're saying their insurance company dropped their old health insurance plan?

If the mother goes to the ER, she's still going to pay her deductible. But instead of a $30 co-pay at her doctor? She's on the hook for the $1,500 the ER charges until she's satisfied her deductible.

??

I mean, really. If you don't have a $30 co-pay for the doctor visit? You shouldn't be having kids. Right?

Meh...so what? Its only this one couple. I mean come on...this is nothing more than ancedotal evidence! Just because a few THOUSAND.....*cough* .... thousand of people are being affected negatively by Obamacare doesn't mean its not good for the millions of people now getting subsidies that the general tax payer is paying for in order to pay for the medical costs incurred by those same millions of poor people! Wait......umm...nvm......

/sarcasm for those that missed it.

Cant do video at work. So you're saying their insurance company dropped their old health insurance plan?

yes and forced them into another plan with a higher deductible to meet the new requirements and they are now are forced to pay 2k more to what they have already paid

Maggie, My bank account is currently in the negatives, IE I owe money. My debit card would not pay for a 1 cent piece of candy much less a $30 up front cost to the local clinic. I'll be able to pay for it in 4 days. But if I had to take my kid to the doctors today I would have to go to the emergency room if I had to pay the $30 up front. Simply because I don't have it at this point in time. I could certainly pay it in 4 days. But today is not 4 days from now.

Then please explain how one is going to control costs when we can't tax medical devices or employers and we can't limit the cost the government pays doctors? So you admit you're demanding things that are counter to each other and can't be both accomplished at the same time.
