This weekend, as Republicans on both sides of the Capitol struggle for a path out of the latest Capitol Hill crisis, Sen. Susan Collins has emerged, once again, as a key player in any potential solution.

Collins is one of the voices of reason within the Republican Party, and her ability to negotiate honestly is the reason that she is frequently called on to help solve impasses between the 2 parties. I believe her proposal will attract enough votes from both Democrats and Republicans to end the shutdown, as well as the looming default on our debt, which hits in less than a week. Rather than attempting to defund Obamacare, or use poison pills in her proposals, in attempts to make the other side look bad, she has come up with something that is truly bipartisan. Her proposal does kill the medical device tax, but otherwise leaves Obamacare alone. And why not? Obamacare has nothing to do with shutting down the government.

While the GOP has gone off the deep end, Collins remains a voice of reason within the party, which is why her approval rating remains at 69%, as the ratings of others in her party are tanking. She will never be defeated by a Democrat, and the Tea Party will never be able to primary her out of her job. People see her as honest, which she is, and that kind of reputation is everything.

Does she have a suggestion for replacing the revenue that the medical device tax would generate?

After learning what a ripoff medical devices are, I think this sucks. Better to delay the individual mandate than to give yet more corporate interests a pass while milking individuals.

We aren't getting revenue from the tax, so there's nothing to replace.

The medical device tax is basically what funds Obamacare.

Defunding Obamacare was the GOPs main reason for shutting down the government.

Collin's plan is not acceptable to either side.

Democrats are not going to negotiate until the other side stops holding the country hostage. Otherwise, they'll just keep doing it everytime the debt ceiling deadline nears with more outrageous demands.

It has everything to with shutting down the government. The House passed a bill that funded everything, but Obamacare. The Libbos didn't go for it.

No, funding Obamacare, is the reason the Democrats let the government shut down.

Huh?!?!? Tax is a revenue for the government, my understanding is that this tax will specifically be used to support ACA, so how is it not a revenue from the tax?

Democrats rejected this plan because it doesn't increase spending.

So you love that RINO huh, gee I never would have guessed.

You just said that defunding Obamacare had everything to do with shutting down the government....

It has everything to with shutting down the government. The House passed a bill that funded everything, but Obamacare. The Libbos didn't go for it.

Democrats offered to negotiate the budget 18 times in the last six or seven months and the Repubs refused to even appoint a negotiator. This self induced crisis is on the Republicans heads.

The House passed 4 appropriations bills months ago, and the Senate has done nothing. They have voted on exactly one bill since July.

Refusal to fund Obamacare led the GOP to shut down the government.

Refusal to fund Obamacare led the GOP to shut down the government.
May I be so bold as to assist with a slight re-wording....

Refusal to fund the law of the land, passed by both Houses, signed into law by the president, and affirmed constitutional by the Supreme Court led the GOP to shut down the government in a temper tantrum akin to two year olds.

We aren't getting revenue from the tax, so there's nothing to replace.

If no revenue is generated by the tax, repealing it does nothing.

Well, to give you an idea of what kind of clout she may have, I'm liberal (though not a Democrat and not progressive), and I would even consider voting for her for President. I admire her that much.

But I don't know if fooling with Obamacare is on the table at all. It's an intricately woven maze of provisions that provide for funding of the Act and spreading of risk and such. I suspect they can't upset the apple cart too much in the beginning until they see what can and can't be removed or revised. It could end up costing the taxpayer.

It's like the Dems saying "we won't approve paying our bills unless Honda is required to start making more cars in this country." The two things aren't connected. They would be holding our credit hostage for a pony they want.

But the fact that it came from Collins carries weight, I'm sure. We'll see.

The Democrats haven't offered up a budget in 4 years. There hasn't been anything to negotiate.

Refusal to fund Obamacare led the GOP to shut down the government.

It's the Dems that shut down the government, because they want everything, or nothing, going against the will of the people.

Yes they have. What universe do you live in?

The House GOP hasn't allowed them to come to a vote. That doesn't mean there were no offers.

Apparently "everything" includes the exact spending levels the GOP asked for.

The Senate passes the budget. The Senate hasn't passed a budget to vote on. I live here in the real workd.
