Diversity trumps racism on Twitter after historic Miss America victory

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

Not accepted diversity. Again, if you're accused of being a RINO, what they are really saying is "Get the **** out of this party."

I've actually heard a few, and that's a few make such a remark. Again being allowed descending opinions is part of diversity.

If Nancy Pelosi were to call for Barack Obama to get out of the Democrat Party, what do you think would happen ?

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

I don't know the details on that so I'll take your word for it. I consistently hear on this site that racism does not exist anymore so really, those are the people I am speaking to here.

Racism is alive and well, but gravitating toward Twitter for analysis is just asking for trouble. To me, it's like going to a bar during the last hour or so and getting people's opinions on the Syrian Massacre, or going to a crack house for the same.

A strange question. Pelosi would likely be criticized, but it could be some that would say this President doesn't stand for liberal reform, etc.

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

I did not mean to imply that is what he was saying. I was referring to the racist nutbags the article references.

Anyone, at any time and regarding any event, can reference racist nutbags. What's the debate?

I'm not quite sure what he means by a liberal body

I don't think anyone understands that, except him.

I'm liberal and that's exactly what my body looks like so, but I do have tatoos...so maybe he's onto something.

Are you seeing anyone? ;)

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

This country is all about diversity. We are a melting pot. Embracing that reality and welcoming the traditions of the many ethnicities we represent, tolerance and acceptance. Those are pretty great values to present as American. Don't you think?

Perhaps, but the first Asian American (Filipina) won Miss America in 2001, can you tell me when the first Italian American, the first Irish American, the first German American or the first Swedish American won Miss America?

Respectfully T, what is your point?

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

Yeah, you're right. Racism IS dead.

I loathe this "competition" but come-on. She is a beautiful woman and evidently pretty classy because she chose to rise above and let it go.

Nina Davuluri … happens to be of Indian descent. In fact, she's the first Indian-American to be crowned Miss America,” Leslie Bentz reported for CNN.com. “But the tweets that followed the 2014 pageant in Atlantic City on Sunday night didn't focus on how it's the second consecutive year that a Miss New York has taken the crown, or about the judge's questions (including inquiries about Miley Cyrus and Syria). They were about Davuluri's heritage.”

On the feminist blog Jezebel, Laura Beck wrote, “Racists got so mad, they started mixing up Indian, Indian-American, Arab, Muslim, and everything in between. It's (literarily) a most impressive display of dumb mixed with intolerance and even more stupidity.”

some users tweeted that Davuluri was not ‘American enough’ to win the title while others went as far as to say she ‘looks like a terrorist

...after the dust settled a significant contingent of Twitter users voiced support for her.

It is however, encouraging to hear that so many supported her in response to the racist deluge.

I think you bring up a good point. A minority of people with nothing to say tend to scream quite loudly. Its best we just ignore them.

That we are getting rediculous with "diversity" claims or historic firsts. What is next the first tattooed, amputee and special olympian Miss America?

The saturation serves a greater purpose though. We get used to it and it becomes more common place in our minds. As it should. I can understand how one might feel like the issue is being crammed down their throat, and honestly I have felt that way myself. I wondered why though. I had to look at myself to answer that question. Which sounds preachy, don't mean it that way. It's just what I felt the situation required.

Actually, this one would have seen a potential winner for those with disabilities.

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

Ah who the hell cares. It amazes me how anyone can politicize a beauty/popularity contest. Doesn't matter what race/nationality she is - I'd go balls-deep on her. All that matters.

I think that not mentioning it personally, would have been far classier. No harm in answering a question about ethnicity, race or family heritage, should it ever be asked, but blurting it out as the most important thing about your selection is tasteless. Perhaps the next Miss America can simply say thank you to America and that they are honored to have been chosen.

52 photos and not 1 bathing suit, I mean wtf...

"Transgendered" actually

The Left is driving our culture mad with their "moral" absurdities

Wouldn't that be great if she felt that it was no longer necessary or was such a hot topic that it would promote her ambitions

With liberals around, that will never happen.

lol @ bigots rearing their ugly heads on the internet equaling national news, and assholes taking it as some type of commentary on the american people.

Re: Diversity trumps racism...for some

There is always next year. ;)

There is the possibility for every year. Though, I think it's like seeing a Miss North Dakota crowned. Not very likely ;)

The thing of it is though is that that can be seen as being meaningless to many people, yet it also could strike a clever response on what Americans, or the modeling industry could view as beautiful. People with disabilities, many times, aren't quite valued in that sense. I say that with a caveat, because one can point to the absolutely gorgeous Marlee Matlin as an exception to a common unwritten rule about societal definitions of beauty. Not too many folk would argue against that women being labeled stunning.

Democrats are racist.......

Affirmative action is racist..... A minority gets a job only because they're a minority?

You realize that if the job it is because they are a QUALIFIED minority, don't you?
