Obama appeals for backing to hit Syria, Europeans urge delay

Hi Ari, welcome to DP.

What is taking the UN inspectors so long anyway.

They are acting with lightning speed compared to Obama bringing those responsible in Benghazi to justice.

It is just a freaking report! Has Assad used WMD's or not!
I don't think the report will even make that determination. The report, I believe, will say only whether or not there is evidence of chemical weapons usage. It will not tell us who used them. If that is the case then the report itself is useless. But then again, it is the UN we are talking about here.

Personally, by direct order or via Email? Probably not. Did anyone high up in the U.S. gov't authorize fast & fuzzy, non-response to Bengahzi or the IRS using targetted names to enforce tax law? You are asking for some outsider to find a direct connection from the very top of the closed gov't of a very whacked out nation (in all cases that I mentioned). ;)

I understand, but it is a freaking report! Why the content has not been exposed to the media by now already?

Would an official UN report of maybe or probably be sufficient justification for Obama's "mini war"?

I think I heard on one of the news channels that they are trying to make it a more detailed report than originally planned given the extra scrutiny it will receive now. It will probably fall short of assigning blame, but might go so far as to determine the means of delivery, possible location of origin etc etc.

No. It is a matter of congress now anyway.

Sources?

Not sure. I haven't been able to anything that goes into detail about them. It seems like France, Britain, and US have already made up their minds as to who used the Sarin. It would be interesting if the UN report said otherwise.

Perhaps they are being thorough and aren't interested in an agenda driven conclusion.

The USA. Are you in Kosovo?

You are the first one in Debate Politics to make the accurate connection that fast between Dardania and that meaningless name to us Albanians that live here predominantly. May I ask what is the positive difference between you and most everyone here? ;)

It takes a week to do that?

Sorry DDD, wasn't trying to be argumentative with that. I have no clue how such operations are conducted so I was just suggesting that to gather ALL available physical evidence, interviewing every last eye witness, combing over what the US says they have as evidence, combing over what the Russians say they have as evidence to the contrary, assembling a report and then publishing the report so that when they convene their meeting, it will be available for all members. So, I don't know, how long does all that take, you tell me.

I know where it is because it was a roman colony so I made the connection when hearing about Kosovo. Other than that I know nothing. lol

A reasonable goal would be to encourage Assad to agree to a cease fire, and terms that would provide fore enforcement of a cease fire. The FSA has indicated that they will not agree to a ceasefire, without Assad leaving. Perhaps the military strike by Obama, could be conditioned upon the FSA agreeing to a cease fire.

US Intelligence could be used to detect violations of the cease fire.

No matter what the report says, I have a feeling Obama will spin it as something that urges us to act against Assad now. Even if the report says that Al-Qaeda launched the weapons on the civilians.

Naturally, since that makes Assad into an irresponsible leader for failing to keep his military operations (and supplies) under control. ;)

Obama, naturally, will leave out his own "workplace violence" problem at Fort Hood. What Assad should have done is to promise to hold, whoever they may be, criminally responsible or perhaps to simply ask "what difference, at this point, does it make"?

It takes time to have a proper war. No need to rush in half-prepared by any side in this conflict. Maybe the UN is waiting for that. China has a boat or two on the way. I'd at least give 'em time to get there before the shooting starts. Besides, the UN will carefully avoid attributing the event to any side, given the Security Council split. Why didn't Obama call for Congress to return for an emergency session, if the event was so critical?

It depends how they made their research. If what they did in the field was only and only gather data then it would take a lot more time! But if a body was assigned with data gathering and another body was assigned with data analysis while in Syria this could have been done faster!
