Congress not rushing back for Syria vote

Obama obtained UN authorization for use of force in Libya, Russia and China supported it for its stated purpose, to protect the Libyan civilians. But Obama abused the resolution to overthrow the Libyan government, that is what pissed off China and Russia, that is why they have denied him a resolution at the UN for Syria and this is what you get when you betray your partners. The US has no credibility and needs to get out of the way.

Reference:

"The Chinese historically never supported external intervention and particularly the use of force against a regime," says Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

China might also have been burned by the intervention in Libya. Neither Beijing nor Moscow vetoed the U.N. resolution that eventually led to a NATO-led military intervention, which led to the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi. China believed that action went beyond the resolution's mandate.

China will continue to support Assad "until it becomes clear that the wind was blowing the other way," Glasser says."

Maybe the Nobel Peace Prize people would, but the people I run into who voted for Obama are still convinced he's the most wonderful, fair-minded President we've had in decades--"and of course, there's the terrible mess he inherited from Bush, and look how beautifully he's coped; no one could have done better."

You need to find smarter people to associate with. ;)

Congress not rushing back for Syria vote

Good, more than likely Congress will vote down his authorization for force in Syria.

It's time sensitive says Kerry, no rush, said Obama, congresscritters have to finish their break...since it's a matter of national security.

What the hell.

But...it can wait a couple of weeks.

Gee, I'm glad everyone's clear here on how serious this is. According to the CIC.

I think I got the wrong 1st impression of you, Paul.

I'm not sure what that means. Care to elaborate? PM me if you want so we don't derail this thread. and you can call me all the names you want there. LMAO :)

I can't say I agree with you that the GOP has placed party over principle or the good of the nation. I can say, however, that I am not a Republican and that I have been consistently disappointed by this President's performance.

He zigs when he should zag; he swings when he should stay. His hubris persuaded him not to listen to protocol officers, so he blundered twice with the Brits. His "hidden agendas" such as millions of dollars of support to green companies and also "Fast and Furious" have made me sick. That Eric Holder still has a job sums up, at least in part, the problem with this President.

we disagree on the GOP's behavior, but probably agree, to some extent at least, on the president's performance, and we probably disagree on whether the alternative, Romney, would've been better ... on that score, there is no question in my mind that Obama was by the far the better choice ... the problem is that we have one party, the Capitalist Party, that has two wings, both, in the end, prostituting themselves to serve the interests of corporations and the ultra-rich first and foremost ... that trickle down is more of a tinkle down, if you know what I mean ...

The people I mostly run into that didn't vote for Obama voted for Romney. Those folks apparently think it's OK for the leader of the free world to think that when you die your spirit is teleported to a planet called Kolob, which is a planet that sits right next to a throne floating in space in our Universe that god sits on. They are cool with this cult being founded by a horse thief that thinks he came from a secret tribe of Israel that magically found it's way to New York three thousand years ago. They also think it's cool for the leader to come from a family where the grandfather had a dozen wives and was being chased around North America by Federales for being a polygamist. And don't get me going on Lyin' Ryan; who said he was "one of us" but then gets caught by Congress and the IRS for lying and not telling Congress that he had $5 million stashed in a secret account. Us "common folks" don't actually have a secret $5 million dollar account hidden off somewhere.

And while I voted for neither of these parties since it is my belief that both platforms require a supporter to be insane because the GOP and DNC platforms are so offensive to common sense; I do however believe Obama is a very fair minded President and has the utmost integrity. Unlike Reagan; he did not sell arms to Iran illegally while at war with them and then use the hidden cash to fund a terrorist war in Central America. And unlike Bubba Clinton, he wasn't boning 21 year old girls in the Oval Office or paying back Walmart with his power because Sam Walton put his wife on the Board of Directors and wanted to see profit from that ex job. And unlike Bushtard II, he didn't give tens of billions in no-bid contracts to his VP's ex company Halliburton as a favor, even though that ex company got busted for ripping off Americans, which culminated in hundreds of millions in fines and some officers of Halliburton going to prison. Or Jimmy Carter, the scum sucking pig that after being an employee of Coca-Cola goes on to be President and makes sure that Congress passes a law giving Coca-Cola unlimited sweetener at $1 a barrel (called the Coca-Cola Law) with the rest of the cost being paid for by taxpayers and then championing Coca-Cola into communist countries as a payback for his previous job. Or Nixon and Watergate and his illegal paybacks to Pepsi as a return for being their Lawyer before being POTUS. Obama has the highest integrity of any POTUS since I was born (when JFK was in power).

So why do we have to enforce the rules especcially when it cost us money??? I am still waiting on Iraq to pay us back for the Bush war?? Sorry we need to set this one out. We are not the worlds police, lets take care of our own for a little bit before the rest of the world.

It looks to me like Obama is following David Cameron in going to his politicians for backing, should be interesting. If US politicians are as 'in-tune' with their populace as UK politicians (for a change) seemed to be, we will get another thumbs down for action.

Paul

The Congressional GOP leadership supports this move by Obama.

so do I.

Greetings, TGND. :2wave:

Indeed!

Is it the human rights abuses that are occurring or having chemical weapons/WMD that bothers you more?

Maybe it bothers these people that we are not killing innocent civilians as collateral damage with out drones.

I'm glad for our military members that this will go to Congress. No need to immediately jump into something that some of our closest allies won't even support.
Looks like Carter Jr. want's to finish what his father, Carter the first, didn't finish. Jimmy Carter destabilized Iraq and Iran. Look what happened since. Obomba (Carter Jr.) is doing what his daddy did. Using the way they do things in the Middle East as cause to change rulers. Ayatollah Khomein ruled with an iron fist. Hi struck down rebels with no mercy. The country was stable and wealthy. Citizens who obeyed the laws lived well.

Libya was Jr's attempt to follow in daddy's footsteps. He's not stopping there, and the rebels are not the good guys. Their culture is not like ours. The rebels need to be taken out fast and hard, or else we get those like Osama Bin Laden to rise in ranks, power, and destructive capability.

I assume by doing it right you mean toppling the Syrian government and putting in another government. The rebels have failed to cooperate effectively with one another and none of the factions would be satisfied with the other in control. The Syrian people prefer the status quo of their government over the uncertainties of the terrorist rebels, they've observed Iraq, Egypt and Libya.
Absolutely. Just look at Iran, before and after Carter aided in leadership change in '79.

Perhaps, but that seems to be the most popular excuse to go in..

Sorry but I dont like excuses.

Unless our government can prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt that Syria poses a direct and imminent threat to our security here at home, we should not be getting involved in their civil war in any way, shape, matter or form.

so do I.

Further evidence that the GOP & DNC are one and the same. Neither one is concerned over the limitations the Constitution places upon them...they will just ignore it anyhow.

Very true. I will include our allies in that however. I do believe we should carry some obligations of the would that do not directly threaten us. Probably the only think I strongly disagree with Ron Paul on. If I were to agree with taking action, it would be against the rebels who are trying to overthrow otherwise, somewhat stable governments.

Personally, I disagree with that being a limit. The constitution specifically grants congress two executive rights. To wage war, and grant letters of marque. In doing so, it does not say it removes these common law rights from the president. Don't bother arguing this point with me, been there several times already with several people over the years. I just wanted to point this out.

However...

Any president would be foolish to wage a war that congress will not support financially! To force congress to pass any bill granting such action then makes it a moral requirement for them to support the finances of it.

Just my bit on the subject
EVERYBODY PLEASE
contact your congresscritters & KVETCH a LOT!
tell them to dig in their heels and do NOT allow the warmongers
to launch yet another war of aggression!

I wonder what the Syrians used to deploy their chemical weapons? If it is deployed by a missile then why not deploy anti middle cruisers to shoot down any more missiles?

I'm going to. Right after labor day.

In the meantime, if you write an actual letter, and send it snail mail, those carry more merit because it shows someone took the extra time, and they are tangible. With e-mail, they can hit the "delete," phone calls often forgotten. Yes, mail can go in the circular file, but it is physical and tangible.
