Jimmy Carter calls for Syria peace summit[W:33]

Re: Jimmy Carter calls for Syria peace summit

Right, gives them a green light!

I've read accounts about Carter's handling of the hostage crisis. He had a failed policy in Iran. He trusted the mullahs because they were also men of faith. He screwed the Shaw, a moderate but imperfect leader. He helped to install the leadership in power in Iran today. He should have prayed for no sandstorm.

Wasn't arguing that. The failed rescue attempt was NOT Carter's fault. And the CIA installed the government that you say he helped replace. Would you fancy another country orchestrating our government for us?

I guess Truman was the only president to let the buck stop at his desk.

Prior to Carter we made cash payments to the mullahs in Iran to keep the Shaw in power. Yes they were through the CIA. Carter believed the mullahs to be Godly men and trustworthy. He ordered the CIA to stop the payments. You know the rest.

If the buck really stopped at the presidents desk, most of them would have been impeached.

Re: Jimmy Carter calls for Syria peace summit

Will the peace summit occur before or after the bombings?

It's not going to occur.

They can be run concurrently so that both sides can have their cake and eat it too. ;)

Re: Jimmy Carter calls for Syria peace summit

During the last months of Bush's presidency with the anti war rhetoric ratcheting up prior to the election, Carter went on his own to Syria to speak to the leaders of Hamas. Bush begged him not to go because of the situation with Assad at that time and their ties with Hamas which to this day our government views as a terrorist group. But the old peanut farmer went anyway undermining the efforts at the time to push Hamas in a corner who were helping Al Qaeda through Iran with attacks on our service men in Iraq.

And remember Nancy Pelosi's junket to Syria, she too along with Democrat friends in the House went to meet Assad. Bush begged them not to go.

The Syrian regime used her meeting to its full propaganda advantage. After concluding his meeting with Pelosi, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, said, “These people in the United States who are opposing dialogue I tell them one thing: Dialogue is … the only method to close the gap existing between two countries.” Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Pelosi, Syrian officers and North Korean scientists scrambled to put the finishing touches on a covert nuclear facility, and Syrian dissidents dove for cover, interpreting correctly that Assad would interpret the end of America’s isolation of Assad as a green light for murder. Assad, in hindsight, welcomed Pelosi not as a politician with whom to have sincere dialogue, but rather as a useful idiot who might help relieve him of international pressure.
Remembering Nancy Pelosi

But the useful idiocy didn't stop there. John Kerry later made 6 visits to dine and TALK with Assad

During the visit, he said in a press conference: “President Barack Obama's administration considers Syria a key player in Washington's efforts to revive the stalled Middle East peace process.

"Syria is an essential player in bringing peace and stability to the region."

Well today those chemical weapons many on the left didn't believe to be a real threat, a murderous dictator has used them on his own people and millions fleeing the country. That's what talk gets you. Talk Talk Talk, that's what the left are good at. Too bad winning an election by beating the anti-war drums day in and day out was more important, and because of it, there's genocide and complete chaos in the region today.

It doesn't surprise me that Carter wants to go TALK some more. And why Obama running all over the place trying to TALK someone into joining his effort to shoot off a few missiles, like that is going to do anything at this point except kill more civilians. Assad doesn't need any help doing that, he seems to be real good at it.

Thanks for that Grant, however, I couldn't open it. Do you have a different link for that?

I just did a copy and paste, Montecresto, and it worked. Maybe you can try that.

You have one screwed up history book informing you.

Carter wasn't president when the shaw came to power so he's not responsible for the people of Iran hating the shaw due to him trying to westernize its culture by gun force. The shaw got cancer and left Iran for medical treatment which is when the ayatollah came back to Iran from his exile. Carter didn't welcome him back nor did he trust him. The shaw came to the US for treatment and the ayatollah demanded we turn him over to Iran for execution. Carter didn't turn him over.

What did you expect any president to do? Go to war with Iran for letting the ayatollah back in country? You are not reading historical points. You are reading talking points.

I didn't say that the Shaw came into power when Carter was president. Carters actions in concert with the CIA caused his overthrow. Carter was in office when the Shaw was deposed. The Shaw wasn't a good guy either but he was moderate by middle eastern standards. He encouraged women to become educated and didn't punish them for wearing western garb. He did this as he was brutal to his enemies.

Here's a little history for you.

Archived-Articles: Jimmy Carter's Human Rights Disaster in Iran

The election of Mr. Carter as president of the United States in 1976, with his vocal emphasis on the importance of human rights in international affairs, was a turning point in US-Iran relations. The Shah of Iran was accused of torturing over 3000 prisoners. Under the banner of promoting human rights, Carter made excessive demands of the Shah, threatening to withhold military and social aid. Carter pressured the Shah to release "political prisoners", whose ranks included radical fundamentalists, communists and terrorists. Many of these individuals are now among the opponents we face in our "war on terrorism".

The Carter Administration insisted that the Shah disband military tribunals, demanding they be replaced by civil courts. The effect was to allow trials to serve as platforms for anti-government propaganda. Carter pressured Iran to permit "free assembly", which encouraged and fostered fundamentalist anti-government rallies. The British government and its MI6 intelligence agency also heightened the Shah's precariousness. The government-controlled BBC presented Iranians with a dossier of twenty hour newscasts detailing the location of all anti-Shah demonstrations and consistent interviews with the exiled outcast Ayatollah Khomeini, making a religious scholar few Iranians knew about into an overnight sensation.

When the Shah was unable to meet the Carter Administration and British demands, the Carter Administration reportedly ordered the Central Intelligence Agency to stop $4 million per year in funding to religious Mullahs who then became outspoken and vehement opponents of the Shah. Unfortunately, the Shah's efforts to defuse the volatile situation in Iran failed, despite the grant even of free and democratic elections. Confronted with lack of US support and unleashed Mullah fury, the Shah of Iran fled the country.

Does anyone but me think Carter is senile?

Carter was a disaster at ever level and the American people of the day knew it. There's got to be a lot of revisionist history to make this guy even moderately competent. He was a serious mistake and the American people had the wisdom to correct their error in the next election.

I never said you did. I knew as I wrote that line that you would retort in defense this exact way. I was simply putting the context around the history that you clearly don't know.

Bullcrap. His overthrow was because he left the country for medical treatment and the people of Iran hated him so much that they allowed his enemy in to replace him.

No, but he punished them for wearing non-western garb. He instituted laws in 1929 and 1935 that women and men had to NOT wear veils and to wear European styled hats.

The Shah was brutal to his people and for some reason you want to blame Carter on that. The only argument you made was "this happened in Iran when Carter was president in the U.S. therefore it is Carter's fault. Your extremely flawed logic simply doesn't fly.

I'll pass on your right-wing propaganda site. Thx tho. Besides, of the two of us, I'm not the one lacking in the historical knowledge of this topic.
