Some school districts quit healthier lunch program

My sister-in-law is in the 8th grade and she HATES all of this healthy food just as the article suggests.

Perhaps we should make more of an effort to get the kids to eat the healthy food instead of giving in to their wishes purely based on their tastes?

When I was a kid we brought our own lunches, anyways, I think they should have options, and if the PARENTS want to force the kids to eat the healthier foods, that is their call not the Government.

We did this in the UK a whle ago and so far it has been a great success. Once kids work out this is all they get they tend to start coming around to it and if parents dont like it they can send their kids to school with junk food.
And in the UK you are programmed to be sheep You have except the the states philosophy that your not capable to make your own decisions and need the state to make them for you

I thought schools were supposed to offer choices to students? Or maybe things have changed in the last 20 years.

You're thinking about the movement that came before the no choice nanny state healthy food movement.

As far as I know they can still bring their own lunches. Plus, in this case, it's already something that the government is providing.

They changed what they were providing due to a crazy initiative headed by Michelle Obama. Here's the thing, food is not the problem. Kids need to be more active, get off the computers, off the video games, and go outside every once in a while.

It's both.

It's not the only problem, but it certainly helps for the kids to be eating a healthier diet. I don't know about you, but if I eat healthier it makes me more likely to have the energy to be more active.

But let the parents make that decision, Government should not be deciding what I do or do not get to eat.

It gets better... ROTFLOL... and there is a solution... We can save $11 Billion by getting rid of vomit.

Behold the horror of whole wheat bread and skim milk.

What's the point? The government shouldn't change a government program to provide healthier food?

The government shouldn't take away the food without thinking about the consequences first. Why not ask the kids and parents? Why are they making arbitrary decisions? They should have known it wasn't going to work by watching "Food Revolution" a few yars ago, don't remember the chef's name but it didn't work.

They should offer the kids choice like they did when I was kid. I don't seem to recall there being many fat kids around back then.

They do have a choice. They can bring their own lunch.

This reminds me so much of my cat. My cat was a feral half grown kitten when I first encountered him. He was starving and scrawny as hell so I started coaxing him with dry cat food. He would scarf the stuff right up! One month I could not afford the extra expense of cat food so fed him our table scraps. Once he had a taste of our table scrapes he will no longer eat cat food and if no scraps are provided will go many days without eating simply because he refuses to touch the cat food that he would eat previously without hesitation.

Back on topic - I really cannot judge the children completely without having tried what they are being offered. I know some foods if not prepared right are just awful! I have had a couple stints in jail in the past and the food was so bad I would go without eating for sometimes days at a time because I knew I would survive and could hold out till I could get home and have real food. It was just that bad. But part of me believes that badly prepared food probably isnt the only issue here. Children today are just spoiled with their hot pockets and sugary foods and trying to get some of them to eat the same foods we grew up on is near impossible.

My wife has rescued more than a few starving cats and kittens, plus some dogs. Of our own pets, most eat better than most people. A typical dinner for your little lap dog is fresh shrimp, a motzarelli cheese ball, 1/4th hotdog and some special little dessert. But she always leaves out ordinary pet food too. Something for them to nibble on.

When hungry, a dog or cat will eat anything. So will people.

As for people, she makes very, very healthy meals - but they are oddball but rather very inviting and good tasting. Kids over like it - a lot.

The problem with schools' "healthy menus" is probably they also are crummy menus.

I don't have a problem with schools not serving junk food. But don't see what the hell this has to do with the Federal government either.

I'd imagine it'd work if they only provided healthy options for the school lunch program. Kids aren't going to starve themselves forever.

That is not the school offering choice. That is just allowing parents to be parents while the school fails completely.

I don't think the school needs to offer a choice.

Milk? I see no reason to try to force kids to drink milk. NO regular milk is used in our household. It either will be lactose free or goat's milk. And then only if necessary for cooking or (rarely) cereal, not for drinking. NO babies are given milk except human breast milk.

Quite a few people think cow's milk is very unhealthy for many reasons, including all the steroids and antibiodics given to the cows.

Exactly. Food isn't the problem. They can try to say it is all they want, but it just isn't true.
