The beating death of a decorated World War II veteran took a bizarre twist Tuesday.
Prosecutors said one of the two suspects has suggested that the victim, 88-year-old Delbert Belton, was selling crack cocaine outside the Eagles Lodge and shorted them.
Although prosecutors didn’t elaborate in court, Spokane police later said they’ve found nothing to support suspected killer Kenan Adams-Kinard’s drug dealing claims. Adams-Kinard, 16, is being held in lieu of $3 million bond on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree murder in connection with last week’s confrontation.
The victim’s family reacted to the teen’s claims by describing them as ridiculous.

Meanwhile, Adams-Kinard’s father, Steven Kinard, stands by his son’s claim, saying Belton was well known in the cocaine dealing community. He’s far from the World War II hero he’s been portrayed as, he said.
“He poisoned the country and poisoned our kids,” Steven Kinard said.
Kinard admits he has a history of cocaine addiction, and says he recognized Belton from his own experience and use. Kinard was sentenced to five years in prison in 2005 for two cocaine dealing convictions.
“I think everybody needs to look on the other side of the picture,” he said.

I know there was already a link about this tragedy but it has derailed off into neverland. But I believe this has to be the most pathetic piece of BS that it deserves its own thread.

Please let there be a trial and the defendants use that defense. The prosecutor will rip them apart. Bring on the trial.

Agreed. That is really disgusting. I don't believe it for a minute.

Re: Murder suspect claims 88-year-old victim shorted him in drug deal

Yeah, I'll believe that when the coroner issues a tox report proving it. This is pathetic "the victim made me do it" crap.

Re: Murder suspect claims 88-year-old victim shorted him in drug deal

It's probably just as illegal to kill a drug customer as it is to murder anybody else. So, I don't think this will work as a defense. Some lawyer might make his career getting the guy off and then suing the estate for the balance owed. But, I'll guess that won't happen.

That is pretty impossible to believe. Is the defense really that stupid?? What could possibly make them think that this would work? Is it just an effort to get some press for himself?

Re: Murder suspect claims 88-year-old victim shorted him in drug deal

Kinard was sentenced to five years in prison in 2005 for two cocaine dealing convictions.

If that's true, why is it so impossible?

Kinard is the kid's father, not the old man.

I had a read fail, thanks.

Yeah well some people believe Trayvon Martin was just some innocent little boy who'd never hurt a fly too. Thugs are what they are...scum of the earth and they come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

I am shocked Jessee and Al are not rushing to this misguided almost obamas-son child's legal and PR defense? Why not?

Why do people constantly say the above bold? Getting kinda old.

Why can't radical leftist call hateful race baiters what they are and call upon good people to reject them for the hatred they spew? Instead of attacking the messenger?

I'm neither a fan or Sharpton or Jackson but I don't consider them "race baiters" per say since they've had some significance during the MLK era. I just kinda think people watch too much Fox and begin to start parroting terms like "race baiter" "race hustlers" etc

It's just really really old.

Like father like son!

I think too many people listen to idiots like Jackson and Sharpton. They serve no one but themselves.

What are the "too many people," who are listening to them?

Yeah, I was rather confused by the approach myself.

Well, the suspect is allegedly claiming the victim was "selling" crack, not using it. That the alleged assault occurred because the victim had "shorted" the gang when they bought it. Nothing in the article, except a friends comment that the victim didn't use illegal drugs, indicates that the suspect stated the victim was a drug user as well as an "accused" crack dealer.

However, while anything is possible in the world of drug dealing, I'd find it highly unlikely that an 88 year-old man was a crack dealer.

The accusation by the teen is just a quick unthought out excuse why he killed him. It just shows his creativity power to be equal a soap dish.

But the one that fries me is the father stating that "Belton was well known in the cocaine dealing community". I have actually met Belton before and although not a personable friend of him would be willing to put up my house in betting this guy has never even touched cocaine before. It is such a ludicrous statement The father is just a lying piece of pond scum dressed in human clothes. I hope the Spokane police bust him again for drugs.

Police have already said there's no evidence of that.

Even if drug dealing accusations were true (mistake not what I'm saying - I don't believe it for one hot second), they would STILL bring charged with murder.

Re: Murder suspect claims 88-year-old victim shorted him in drug deal

The next thing the defense will be saying is that 'They are only being prosecuted because they are young black men, and that they justice system is broken, and that they should be thanked for getting a dealer off the streets instead of being sent to jail..'

They will cry racism.

Their constant interference and fanning the flames is very tiresome.
One is a convicted liar and the other is an agitator and provocateur.
