Tenn. judge changes infant's name from 'Messiah'

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Quite right, the government should have the duty and the right to protect it from parents who do not have the decency to give the child a name that does not make it bullied and ridiculed.

Messiah is not an suitable name for a child.

You live in the Netherlands I see. This means you have NO concept of self sovereignty. If you did you would be saying the same thing the Americans are mostly saying, the judge is full of crap.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

I'm curious what the two parents put into the motion to have the judge decide on the last name. If they were too vague, they could have given the judge the ability to "decide on the name" of the child.

At the same time, its not like they named their kid Adolf Hitler or Aryan Nation. Do that, and they just take your kids away.

Why not? What's wrong with Messiah? Plenty of Spanish men are called Jesus. Plenty of Italians are called Santo (meaning Saint). Plenty of Spanish women are called Immaculada Concepcion (Immacualte Conception). Heck, plenty of Spanish women are called Mercedes, like the car. I don't see what the probem is with Messiah as a boy's name.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

I bet the judge just loves it when a Hispanic named Jesus appears before him :smash:

You know the car was named after a woman called Mercedes, don't you?

Messiah is not an suitable name for a child.

So should we have the judge change a kids name from "Peter" to something else? I mean he might get bullied or ridiculed by being called "Dick" another name for your peter. Sorry, but kids bully and tease REGARDLESS of the name, so this is a lame excuse for a judge to get involved in the naming of a kid.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

The judge is a freaking moron. I thought this kind of idiocy only happened in Europe. Government's duty to protect children from parental abuse does not include forbidding harmless first names, ferkrissakes. :doh

Harmless? Look at what happened to the last guy named that.

Yes, smartypants I do know that. That is not the point. In many non-spanish speaking countries the name Mercedes is associated with a car, not a person.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Some of you people are nuts.

The point about the name being stupid is valid.

Just think... If a man named Thomas Dick had a child and gave him a First name of Suck and a middle name of My.... some of you idiots would think that is a-okay as well.

What specific law is being broken by naming their kid "messiah"? There are LOTS of names I don't like that parents give, should we all have them legislated at the bench now? What about religion? I happen to think that is horrible for a child, guess my thoughts trump your rights correct? No, they don't and neither should this.

The fact YOU think it is stupid is in no way an approval to have a Judge name your child.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Damn, just Damn! I was rather hoping to introduce my graddaughter to the kid some day.

I was thinking Great Deceiver and Messiah might hit it off.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Its none of the judges business and further was not contested by either parent. Its the parents purogative to name the child whatever they please however dumb or offensive or debilitating it is.

Irrespective of the issues in this case, I don't believe that parents have a purogative to name a child as you claim. I don't believe any jurisdiction would allow you to name your child f***er, or n***er, or aintnowhiteasshonky, or some others that come to mind. I consider some names that parents chose to be a subtle and sometimes not so subtle form of child abuse.

Children have civil rights and just as the government/courts can step in if you're not educating your child they can step in for other child protection reasons if the parents aren't protecting and raising their child properly.

So do we then produce a list of names we can't name a child? Who maintains or decides what is on that list. And who's moral standpoint do we use?

I agree that the names you listed are inappropriate, but "messiah" hardly falls under that list. I happen to think Naming kids after cars or seasons is stupid as well, should my thought trump a parents rights?

Are we now going to exclude people naming their children Mohammad or Jesus?

So it is the parents right to torture their kid? I am sorry, some might call it activist judging, I call it common sense judging.

Torturing? So is naming a kid "Dick" or "Richard (nickname Dick) torture too? Gimme a break.

I agre with this. A parent has a responsibility for their child to care for it and look after its well-being. If a judge considers that someone isn't doing that then they have the responsibility to intervene. This is a question of the dereliction of parental duty, not the abuse of parental rights.

Personally, I can't see much of a problem with Messiah, but it isn't my call. Saying Jesus is an okay name, but Messiah isn't seems a little arbitrary. It's like those people who get upset at other's using 'God!' or 'Jesus H. Christ!' as exclamations and yet will use the word 'Lord!' instead. It lacks rational consistency.

Not to mention all those Chinese naming their kid "Hung".

Just imagine how disappointed those kids will end up being when they grow up.

I went to college with a guy called Dickon Mee. Nickname: Lookatthe, or Looky for short. True story.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Why are we looking at it wrong, the judge had the chance to change the name to protect the child and he did. For all I care they call it James Messiah Johnson. That would allow the child to leave out the Messiah part if he introduces himself.

A grown up "Messiah DeShawn Martin" could be known as "M. DeShawn Martin" and introduce himself as "DeShawn"

Sort of like "J. Edgar Hooover" going around and introducing himself as "Edgar"

Well, it's said that opposites do attract.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

I'm honestly wondering if this magistrate isn't an elected official, and this is one of those low laying judicial positions where no actual legal knowledge is required

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Yes, yes it is:

Yeshua (name) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seriously, this isn't something I made up. "Jesus" as a name is only about 400-500 years old and was created to differentiate "Jesus" from other Yeshuas in the bible.
Even *if* it is, it is also completely and totally 100% irrelevant to the topic.

I suspect the parents are unmarried and it was a simple dispute that he wanted his name and she wanted her name.
