Religious family abandons U.S., gets lost at sea

counterpoint.0_standard_400.0.jpg

They knew what they were getting into...

I say, let them crash.

I'm sure you'll be acknowledging how churches (i.e., religious people) in this country provide untold amounts of charity and aid to the poor, and disaster victims.....right? Next time you disparage religious people, you think about that.

Churches are often the engine of good in our society, but that doesn't make what these folks did less stupid.

First I was responding his questioning of their integrity, not their decision, and secondly to the general hate being spewed in this thread by some. One set of parents make a mistake, but because they're religious, the religion itself is made bad as well. That's the notion being put forth by some.

God led them to a hotel in Chili. They should stay there, since that's where their god led them.

Yeah, you know, I'm wondering why they didn't continue their journey at that point, why come back to the US?

I'm not really qualified to judge their spiritual quest, but my hope is that they accept the answer that god / nature / the universe / etc. gave them instead of continuing to be pigheaded about it. What they did took courage but it sounds like they weren't prepared enough and it might be worth considering how well off their kids are.

On that we agree. Maybe God intended for them to remain adrift at see or drown. Someone just messed with the fabric of time!

If there weren't children involved, I would say that maybe we shouldn't have interfered with God's work.

This whole thread reeks of hate for religion. Read Post # 6.

Given your specification of that post, I was expecting a lot worse. Really, that's the best you've got for "hate for religion?" :lamo

Oh, sorry, was I just persecuting you?

What they did took insanity and an absolute lack of reason or foresight. They're not noble for this ridiculous maneuver, they're foolish for it. Also, reckless as parents.

Well to be fair neither of us really knows what they were feeling when they did it, but I was imagining doing something like that and for myself it would take courage - insane or not.

The thing I don't get is: where did they think they were going? Unless they went to some remote island, they would just end up landing in another long-standing civilization with rules, prejudices, etc. You can leave America but you can't leave humanity.

They said they did it because gays, abortion, and the government running the churches (wherever the hell they get that from). They were aiming for a remote island called Kiribati, that's 97% Christian.

As Christians they don't believe in 'abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church,' she said.

Gastonguay family abandoned U.S. for religious reasons and sailed for Kiribati; was lost at sea for 3 months | Mail Online

They almost drown their two kids to keep them away from gays and abortion. They weren't a church attending family, by the way. They read the bible on their own and decided it told them to go to Kiribati.
