Paula Deen Allegedly Asked Black Staffers to Dress Like Aunt Jemima - Yahoo! TV

The profile of Deen's cook Dora Charles overflows with allegations of racist behavior. Deen allegedly paid black employees less than white ones and used racial slurs.

But it is Deen's idea of Confederate-tinged dinner theater that may be the most unseemly element of the story. Charles tells the Times that she refused Deen's requests to ring a dinner bell in front of her Savannah, Ga. restaurant The Lady and Sons and, in the words of the paper, holler for "people to come and get it."

--------------

The article seems likely to tarnish Deen's already damaged reputation following her admission last month that she had used the N-word. The chef was forced to open up about her use of slurs during a deposition related to allegations of racism and sexual harassment brought against Deen by a former employee, Lisa T. Jackson.

In the wake of Deen's admission, the celebrity chef was dropped by Food Network and dumped by retailers like Walmart and Target and the drug maker Novo Nordisk, with whom she had endorsement deals

Conservatives: She isn't racist.
Liberals: Of course she's racist.
Libertarians: You don't have to work for her if she's racist.
Independents (with Conservative lean): This isn't racist because she asked nicely.
Independents (with Liberal lean): You guys kidding right?
Other & Unknown: Unintelligible post.
Zyphlin: 6,300 word essay.

I did enjoy Fox News' take on this.

I genuinely did. They basically hammer out what is so wrong with this entire situation. The problem isn't so much her use of racial epitaphs. It's the entire culture which she allowed to exist in her place. Porn at the work place? Racial attacks? Homophobic remarks? If your boss is willing to use racial epitaphs, have plantation styled weddings, dress her workers as Aunt Jemima, that's not something which stops 20 years ago unless a person can show a track record of having changed. Paula Deen just seems to have been doing the same **** for 20 years and hoping nobody caught on.

The Food Network did what any business would and should do with people like this. Let them cater to racists if they want on their own platform, works for Glenn Beck.

I know both blacks and whites who collect that Aunt Jemima type kitchen stuff. It is more a southern thing than a race thing, but yankees don't seem to get that.

until you liberals make Alec Baldwin pay the same price for his Homophobic violent threats i don't want to hear a freaken dam thing about Paula Deen come out your hypocrite mouth

1. Paula Deen is a mess.

2. I'm slightly annoyed because - before this mess - I wanted to go to her restaurant. Now, it's not going to happen because I'm not going to spend money on such a mess.

3. The Fox News segment was surprisingly good (except for the two people acting like they were in high school). Their commentary was SHARPLY different from most of the commentary from DP conservatives so I found that interesting.

It's kind of hard to argue that this is a 'Yankee' thing when the person making the allegations is SOUTHERN.

Oh no - my mom sent away when I was a kid and got me an Aunt Jemima cast iron coin bank - does that mean I'm a racist?

That's true. I have some of it at home. The problem isn't so much that she's particularly fond of that brand. The problem seems to stem from all the other things she's doing.

Not shocking really with everything else that's came out.

The focus on her saying the "N Word" before during all this always seemed to miss the point to me. It's been the mess of other stuff for her and her son...like this, like the wedding, like seperate entrances and bathrooms for black employees in one of their chains, etc. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many Americans who can honestly admit they've never said hte "N word in some fashion before". However, things like desiring to have a theme wedding of old planation days with a bunch of black people mimicing slave wait staffs...or trying to do a "theme" resturant complete with minstral show mock up black woman yelling for people to come home to dinner...or flat out segregating your work staff. Yeah, THOSE are the far more glaring issues to me than that she admitted to saying the "n word" at some point in the past.

I can't blame Food Network for letting her go. They're a private business and there's a LARGE semgent of the population that is very sensitive about race. Deen is VERY closely associated with that Brand, which meant it would take a drastic measure to seperate their name from hers in terms of attempting to limit any embarassment to the company or negative attitudes towards it from consumers. I have no issue that a company chose to do what's best for it's bottom line and for it's reputation.

That said, is there a general double standard that exists at times in terms of "outrage" over things and these kind of threatened "boycotts"? Absolutelye. But that's the market at work and frankly we have to deal with it. In general, the left seems to be better at these types of organized campaigns to tear someone down and promote a social movement of letter writing and social networking as a means of putting pressure on business to drop people or views; see Chick-Fil-A, Rush Limbaugh's advertisers, the Nappy Headed Ho incident, etc. Can it be hypocritical at times? Absolutely. Rush Limbaugh saying the exact same thing as Alec Baldwin would've likely started another Sandra Fluke incident with people streaming to the internet to post on Facebook and Twitter to urge people to contact the advertisers of that hate mongering homophobe rush. But people are free to be hypocrites and people are free to pick and choose how they wish to get involved within the free market. There's no requirement nor need for people to be "fair" in their attacks, condemnation, boycotts, or etc.

Whether or not people act hypocritically when a darling of their ideological side does something wrong is irrelevant to whether or not what an individual does is worthy of condemnation or action. Just because there's no outrage over someone like Alec Baldwin doesn't mean that Food Network had any less right (or good reason) to let go of Paula Deen. It doesn't mean that what Paula Deen did wasn't exceedingly foolish for someone who makes her living by selling herself within the public eye. It doesn't change that people are free to complain about her, and that many of those complaints are absolutely justified even if the complainer is a raging hypocrite. People's picking and choosing of when to condemn and when not to condemn doesn't actually change whatever the matter at hand is in terms of right or wrong.

So I saw this post on the new post thing and wondered what us liberals had done now since I could not remember who Paula Dean was. Turns out this is even stupider than I thought. Liberals have not done anything to Paula Dean(though Jimmy Carter defended her). Her employer did not renew her contract, but they are not "us liberals". Some sponsors bailed on her, but again that is not "us liberals". Mostly I think "us liberals" did the same thing in regards to her after the report on her as before, which is being not interested in her show or products because they are not things that interest us.

So your whole "hypocrite mouth" **** is built on a lie.

We liberals forced the Food Network to fire her and Alec Baldwin, well, his thing hasn't really blown up yet. You remember the black guy from Grey's Anatomy a few years ago? He went on some homophobic rant and was fired. Mel Gibson? Cee-Lo? Roland Martin? Adam Carolla? Tracy Morgan? There's a huge list of celebrities who've gone down for their homophobic rants.

What did they say? I do not follow celebs so I have no idea. Also, isn't what Deen did much more than a rant? If so, they would be kinda different situations.

I was being facetious. Of course we didn't force the Food Network to fire her. The problem with the apologists is that they don't realize that free market environments tend to filter our their racism. Green reigns supreme over black & white.

I realized you where being facetious, I just got curious about what it was Baldwin had said, and that made me think of the next question.

I dunno - that would depend on how much money you got in that bank and if you are willing to pay for a favorable answer? ;)

I don't think she is racist. I think she just made some bad PR decision. People don't realize that she is really good friends with the Neely's who are the black couple on the food network.

Besides, I can't get mad at any one who makes butter cakes like she does :rock

Mel Gibson's rants are just fantasic though. Hell, probably more entertaining then The Beaver or Edge of Darkness.

And really, Alec's recent little "queen" tirade isn't nearly as interesting of a story than the absolutely ****balls crazy rant on his daughter a few years back.

Though actor's going bat**** crazy starts going down a whole different alley that isn't just racist/homophobic (and immedietely brings us to Christian Bale's terminator tirade)

Which is funny when you take a macro look at the entire scope of things.

So often many on the right argue we don't need such stringent laws enforcing racial quotas or standards and such onto businesses with the notion that society and the public, by and large, simply won't accept most of those type of things in any kind of sizable way and that the basic pressure of the market and society would make such policies and actions rarely seen REGARDLESS of laws being in place.

And so many on the left argue that you can't trust the free market to do it, that there are too many people that tacitly condone racism or let it go on, and that it wouldn't really cause them enough greif to stop them from doing it so we need the government to keep these laws on the books forever and ever because without it we'll just wash away back into the dredges of horrible racism in the marketplace.

Laws ensure you are punished for violations of basic civil rights and race based abuses. Free market ensures your name ends up on Twitter a few million times. One goes hand in hand with the other. - What? You think you should be able to have race based civil rights violations without being reprimanded by the law?

What, like their black employees?

Blacks being good with food is not an insult, and people insulted by associating them with good cooking should go back to their bowls of organic granola.

But here's the catch: The people who claim the free market will take care of these things are often the one's most outraged when the market actually does it. The people who claim that the market alone will not be enough see these people outraged over the free market making it's "correction" and realize that they are the reason that the free market cannot, on it's own, fix the problem.

Case in point: The Zimmerman thing. That's an example of the free market exploiting the **** out of racial animosity for profit. The controversy generates ratings and ratings generate revenue. "But black people alone are too small of a demographic to really generate serious revenue, so let's piss off white people to make them interested in the case. How can that be done? Appeal to their feelings of victimization with regard to race (victimization that is evidenced by the outrage over the market dealing with racist comments and behaviors, such as those committed by Paula Dean)." The free market formula in effect with regard to race: Exploit racial tensions, generate those ratings, collect all that advertising cash, rinse and repeat when the next major thing happens that can be exploited for financial gain.

Even this Paula Deen thing is an example of racial tensions being exploited and even promoted for financial gain, just at a smaller level. Most people didn't give a flying **** about who Paula Deen was before this. She's just some dumpy hillbilly broad who makes pie. She's not the first dumpy hillbilly broad who makes pie to say something stupid, and she won't be the last dumpy hillbilly broad who makes pie to say something stupid. Ironically, her "defenders" are the reason why she gets so much play time, though. A rational person would hear what she did and say "Wow, that dumpy hillbilly broad who makes pie sure is a ****ing idiot." and that's the end of it. Bitch loses her job and the world is unharmed in any way. But her defenders nee dot make it about something more than what it is. It's apparently some vast media conspiracy against freedom and ****, so we have to defend this dumb **** before she gets what she deserves for being a ****ing moron.

Nonsense. It's a vast media conspiracy to make ****ing money. Controversy = profits. The media will do their damnedest to keep racial tensions strong because it's a ****ing cash cow for them. If people do not want it to happen, then they need to stop making it profitable to generate controversy. They shouldn't blame the media for it, they need to blame their own fat asses for planting themselves in front of the TV and generating revenue for the people exploiting the issue for profits. And planting their fat asses in front of FOX or Rush Limbaugh doesn't do it. I guarantee that Rush and Murdoch are ****ing ecstatic about these controversies. They certainly do their best to feed the flames, while talking out the side of their mouth over how horrible the exploitation is. They make a fortune on it.

And out culture is so ****ing stupid they suck it all in without once paying attention to the game of three-card-monty they are being duped by. "I'm not part of the problem!!! I only watch FOX, not the lamestream media!". That's the ultimate flaw in the free market. It would work perfectly if people weren't ****ing retarded, but unfortunately, since most people are dumber than a box of cat****, it often needs regulatory assistance.

(Haven't gotten into a good long debate with you in a while, so I figured I'd take my stab at it here :2razz:)
