Armed man arrested near White House wanted ‘fire a couple of shots,’ police say

200 rounds in 30 minutes, well some practice well placed shots and some practice how fast they can miss... ;)

I suppose this is as good a time as any to remind everyone there is a difference between a one way range and out on the street when it comes to rate of ammo consumption.

Pistol shooting is where i have the fastest rate of consumption- a few weekends ago two former students and my wife joined me at the range. it took us two hours to burn up 200 rounds but then again we only had 6 13 round mags between us, and practiced several different techniques beyond just how fast we could empty a mag... :)

Always amazed me the number of folks who try and compare what they do on a one way range with what really happens when the paper gets to shoot back...

The part that I found more talk worthy is....

Umm..excuse me? Its a felony offense to "bear" arms now? Last I knew the 2nd Amendment does not say that people have a right to keep and bear arms "only as long as you are in your home or buisness". Kind of makes me wonder if he didn't do what he did so that law could be challenged in a court. In which case...more power to him. I'll eagerly await the decision of SCOTUS on this one.

You can wait all you like, but that bus has already left the station

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA v. HELLER

Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms

You really shouldn't type when you don't know what you are talking about.

Or about six seconds if you open fire in view of the White House. (including the time it takes for your bullet-riddled corpse to slump to the ground)

Then you are really going to hate this news..

“Defensive uses of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed (Cook and Ludwig, 1996; Kleck, 2001a),” the study reads. “Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year (Kleck, 2001a), in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008 (BJS, 2010).”

Remember your whole gun safety bit? Well, more bad news. Unintentional firearm-related deaths are less than 1% of all firearm-related incidents. Do you guys have any case at all left after this bang up job by Obama and friends?

He orders an unconstitutional study and then cuts his own nuts off by it. GG..

Kleck?

Tererun, you're cracking me up!!! good posts!

Re CDC study - remember, the NRA leaned on Congress who then banned CDC from spending any money on studying the causes of gun violence.

Pres. Obama's executive order at least let CDC start studying it.

Seriously, folks, why WOULDN'T we want the CDC to study it? How can we know what laws have a chance of working without a study? How can we decide if a PSA campaign might help? We're blind without data. There are private foundations doing it, but we need the CDC to do it.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA v. HELLER

What you just posted there was an opinion made by a judge as pertaining to that case. It does not address this specific instance. The cops did not arrest Briggs for carrying a gun in an gun free zone or a "government bulding" as he was not in one. They arrested him for carrying a gun outside of a home or business. Now unless there is a law which states that the whole of DC is a gun free zone then the law should be challenged. The only way to challenge any law enough to get up to SCOTUS is to have standing. The only way to have standing is by showing that (in this case) you are not allowed to carry a gun in public. IE, get arrested for carrying a gun outside of your home or business.

We do have the right to end our own lives. You know, the whole controlling your destiny thing. Besides, its a mental health problem, not a gun problem. Guns are just a means to an end and if you ban them they will just pick other means towards that end.

Other means can be slower or more difficult to use.

And the important thing is to get the data... to figure out what's going on for real so then policies can address real problems. We've all been saying (well, all of us but Congress) that more money needs to be put into mental health; if the study supports that, great! Now we know it may help address gun deaths. So have the republicans in the Congress been calling for a national mental health care system now that the CDC has reported on this? Please provide the link where they are calling for increased funding and coverage for mental health... .

Sigh..you guys can always find something to grow government with. I knew that no matter what they said be that mental health or gun violence was a problem the only result was more government.

Umm, no

Studies have shown that most suicides are spur of the moment, and if they can be prevented, the suicider is unlikely to try again. For example, a study of people who had been prevented from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridges showed that none of them tried to commit suicide again.

And by the way, a LOT more people die in Illinois from gun violence than Texas. And they have laws against guns.

Nope. You're making it up.

Gun violence in the United States by state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Illinois 3.5/100,000 - 364 deaths a year.
Texas 5/100,000 - 805 deaths a year.

Please... please.. stop making things up.

So what. You're still wrong.

And now I know that you will post incorrect information to advance your agenda and then exaggerate in ANOTHER attempt to further your agenda. You partisans are all alike.

You are correct. He misspoke.

Any statistical violence problems in Illinois are a result of Chicago. Where things are essentially out of control with regard to gang violence and high murder rates.

The rest of Illinois is relatively civil/peaceful. Many people don't realize that if you isolate/discount Cook County (Chicago) the remainder of Illinois is a solid "red" state.

Just a little trivia for you...

Don't know why you highlighted "concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld" since this case has nothing to do with concealed carry. It has to do with bearing arms and they arrested him when he had the gun in plain view.

...Has nothing to do with this.

True, but I was waiting for the Conservative defense of this guy. I thought it would be something about removing tyranny...as it turns out, it's still about the persecution.

And all the "red" states that statistically are inferior by every metric compared to "blue" states, I'll assume its pockets of felonious libruls screwing up those numbers as well?

You're right that it wasn't a CCW case. It's "open display". My bad

Which again falls under the "It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: " and "or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places"

I agree, if a chicago man did this the media wouldn't say Illinois man, they'd say Chicago man...

Now about who has a lot more gun deaths-

Daily beast 2010

Illinois had 8 per 100,000 tied with Nebraska

Now who had more-
Maine
N Dakota
Utah
Colorado
TEXAS with 10.7
Kansas
N Carolina
Missouri
Georgia
Idaho
Oklahoma with 13.4
Tennessee with 15
W Virginia
Kentucky
Wyoming with 14.5 along with Montana
Alabama
Arkansas
Alaska with 17.6
Mississippi with 18.3

Another way to look at this-
Texas had approx 26 million folks in 2010
Illinois 12.8 million

So Texas has a higher firearm death rate per 100,000 AND over double the population.

So yeah Texas has more in total and more per 100,000.

And so do all the other "gun happy" States. The more guns the more gun deaths. It is so obvious it isn't funny.

EDIT: Gun deaths include suicide, accidental and intentional justified shooting by police/others. Use only homicide gun deaths to get a better idea of "gun violence" actually related to crime.

Um, using 2008 numbers because? In 2012 there were 435 gun deaths (of 506 murders) in Chicago alone.
