The case against Zimmerman was weak and obviously the decision to even bring it to trial was purely political. I think in a private moment even the staunchest Trayvon Martin supporters would acknowledge that Zimmerman had no business being charged with 2nd degree murder. Our whole world is being turned upside down...and not only with the Zimmerman case...but that's what we're discussing here.
First, the state of Florida threw the full weight and power of the government against a private citizen and persecuted him for political gain in response to mob rule. Then our Federal government indicates they intend to throw their full weight and power at a private citizen in a Civil Rights case.
What is interesting about the civil rights noise being made right now is that after the OJ verdict there was not one single peep out of the fed about the possibility of bringing a civil rights case against him. Despite overwhelming evidence against him and a successful civil suit... not a peep. Why now and not then?
Remember Rodney King? The jury foreman didn't even get "not guilty" out of his mouth before the feds were lining up the civil rights case. If the feds do choose to go this route it would be very interesting to compare and contrast their logic behind pursuing or not pursuing civil rights violations in these three very high profile cases.
I think it's all just noise, anyway. I have a hard time believing they'd risk pissing off Hispanics at this point in time.
