Holder speaks out against 'Stand Your Ground' laws after Zimmerman verdict

Um, Zim avoided having the judge in a pretrial hearing decide if the case could be tossed out on a SYG ruling, instead he chose to have a jury decide, the jury did not have to cite law, but the jury did decide in part on instructions including SYG.

Yes Virginias, SYG was a part of the trial.

What the wha?

Um, it was central to the Zimmerman case.

The jury instructions:

If George Zimmerman was not engaged in an unlawful activity and was attacked in any place where he had a right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he reasonably believed that it was necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

"Stand your ground" involves the duty to retreat. The defense didn't even bring it up, even though it is proven beyond a doubt that Zimmerman had no conceivable way of retreat while pinned to the ground getting his head bashed in. "Stand your ground" means you do not have a duty to retreat. Without the ability to retreat, there is no "stand your ground".

Pretty much how it works. Regardless of what the jurors were told, neither the defense or prosecution invoked the "stand your ground" law. If there is no ability to escape, then the law is irrelevant.
