Asiana to sue S.F. TV station over bogus pilot names

Re: Asiana Airlines suing Fox affiliate . . .

I heard this on the radio today, they played the clip of the news anchor reading it off and I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF!!!

People need to grow a sense of humor.

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

It wasn't a racist joke, it just made fun of their names, not their qualities as humans. (similar to a Seymour Butts or Mike Hunt joke) It wasn't libel or slander because it was apparently unintentional. Even if it was intentional, it was just a bad joke, not an attack on the airline or the pilots. The airline was not harmed by the newscast. The Supreme Court has ruled that such parodies are protected. The airline doesn't have a case.

I think this incident is hilarious belongs and in the great prank hall of fame. Its hard to believe so many people at the TV station did not notice that the names were bogus, for one thing, they sound Chinese, not Korean.

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

true, but what that has to do with my concerns about racist jokes about a fatal plane crash is beyond me ...

You said "Ask yourself, if I had lost my child in the crash, would I think it was still funny?" Clearly I was responding to that. So I have no idea why you believe that what I said is "beyond you."

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

What is even more mysterious is that this occurred at a SF station where there is such high Asian population. You would think somebody working there may have been exposed to a few Asian names to know these were bogus.

This very well may be the dumbest TV station across the land.

Except the problem was that it wasn't meant as a joke.

It wasn't a parody though. It was a serious newscast that someone didn't do their homework on.

Really? Someone did get their prank read on air, or do you think the station actually did this while risking its FCC license?

It was a parody by whoever came up with the names. Since the news station confirmed the names with the NTSB, it cannot be considered libel.

That may be the thing that gets them off. Now what I'd like to know is who at the NTSB confirmed that, and why wasn't the NSA listening to that call?

My guess would be that there was a substitution of the names before they went on air...

Could be. In which case, then they should be suing the station because one of their employees thought it was a hilarious joke.

There is no law that says that you can successfully sue someone for making fun of you.

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

Why do we laugh at such terrible things? Because comedy is often the sarcastic realization of inescapable tragedy.

It's amazing how few people understand that basic truth, however you want to phrase it. :)

The NSA was listening - they were laughing too hard to take any action. :D

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

How Ron Burgundy stupid do you have to be to fall for that?

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

How would the airline have standing for a case like this?

I could see the pilots themselves suing, but the airline?

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

I think the airline is trying to save face but this is definitely not the way to go about it.

They would have saved more face by making a statement that this blunder did not warrant a response as their number one concern at this time should be the passengers of that airline.

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

I'm happy for you. I'm not at all anxious to descend into a discussion of bigotry and racism. I would point out, in contrast to your gloomy assessment, that having viewed the crash of this plane several times, I think it amazing that so many people lived. That may help your cheery world along, or maybe it'll at least cut into the suffering part of it all. Try to think of it that way for a minute. Maybe more.

I'm glad that more people weren't killed, but that wasn't the issue, was it ... people should at least wait until the bodies are cold before they start making jokes about a plane crash .,.

Re: I Feel So Guilty for laughing......................................

So you're saying it's wrong to point out that they can't pilot any better than they drive?

thanks for helping me make the point the others are missing on this thread ....

btw, have Asian pilots had more plane crashes than non Asians?

I'd have to go back to respond to you Speedy, but I just flew cross country and I'm too tired to explain this to you ... so I'll pass ... have a good night ...

It's called black humor.....and it's uh...kind of a...a primoridial survival mechanism. Yeah, thats it, a primoridial survival mechanism.

Korean newsanchor says it was "lucky" only Chinese were killed in Asiana crash.

South Korean TV presenter says it's 'lucky' that only Chinese died in Asiana crash | South China Morning Post

I think a certain Korean TV station has a little apologizing of its own to do.

That's your issue - not necessarily mine. 288 people survived, which is something to be thankful for. Was the joke appropriate? Nah. Pretty stupid and insensitive. None the less funny - regardless of your reservations. I seriously doubt the pilots are highly offended. I expect they're grateful they're alive, and have more important concerns than an ill-considered joke. Hey, you don't think the Koreans ever make such jokes about Americans, do you?
