As the Texas Senate begins debating the anti-abortion bill that sparked a series of protests that garnered national attention, Republicans backing the measure drew more criticism for confiscating women’s hygiene products from attendees at the gallery in the state capitol on Friday.
According to Burnt Orange Report,
state Sen. Kirk Watson (D) convinced authorities to halt the seizures, but not before GOP lawmakers were mocked online as security guards went through women’s bags pulling out what one opponent of the bill, local activist Jessica Luther, said on Twitter was described to her as anything “that can be thrown at senators.”

“We’re going to have strict enforcement,” Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (R) told the AP. “If there are any demonstrations, we are going to clear the gallery.”
As Think Progress reported, however, attendees with concealed-carry licenses were still being allowed to bring firearms into the gallery. State Rep. Jonathan Strickland (R), who said at one point he was concerned about protesters becoming violent, did not respond when asked if he was bringing his own gun to the building but told the National Review, “I very, very often do concealed-carry, I can say that.”

Guns Yes, Tampons NO! Welcome to Texas, Y'all!

Apparently, Texas Republicans are far more afraid of tampons and maxi-pads than they are of guns. The order's been rescinded, but earlier today the order had been given that 'feminine products' were not allowed within the Texas capitol building. It seems that those in charge - Republicans, remember - were afraid that the protesters were going to throw tampons and maxi-pads at them during the debate over the abortion bill debate.

Really? Guns are allowed in the Texas capitol, but tampons and maxi-pads are not? How long will it take for the Republican rank and file to grasp just how far off the edge of the map their party has gone?

P.S. NO, this is not The Onion. This is Texas.

If there had been legitimate intel that the protesters were planning to throw tampons at legislators, the order makes a bit more sense don't you think? Just as they might well have barred people from bringing in sackloads of Beanie Babies if the rumor had been they were going to throw those...

That's OK, they can just menstruate on them instead.

Occupy Vaginas!

Sounds like it could get bloody.....

With all those guns, I mean.

Protestors were throwing all kinds of stuff, security was required to keep order. The horror!

Let me see here - it would make sense to stop them from throwing tampons...but bringing loaded guns into the capitol building is okay? Does anyone see the disconnect here?

We arent worried about guns those are chill, but tampons now those are dangerous!

No sir. A loaded gun in the hands of law abiding person who has no intention of misusing it, is no threat to anyone.

Contrariwise, if there is known intel that protesters plan to throw certain types of items, preventing them from bringing those items in prevents them from misusing said items.

Totally different.

Throwing the tampons is an expression of free speech.

No. Tampons tho.. Sorry mam we gotta take your tampon away from you :lamo Pathetic.

And if it hadnt been demonstrated that anything that could be thrown would be, they wouldnt need to confiscate anything. Dont act like thugs and you wont wind up with outrageous reactions as a result.

You can't throw things at people.

Guns dont kill people but tampons hurt people! :lamo

Texas has been working hard to overtake South Carolina as the most hilariously ****ed up state for politics.

Redress...the Texas Taliban are alive and well. They control vaginas and the Texas Education Agency. What else do they need to control?

They received a "tip", hmmm? Couldn't possibly have been a set-up to send in plants in order to "smear" the pro-choice protesters, could it? Just a wild rumor they had to "tamp-on", right?

You can as protest; furthermore, they're tampons- not Molotov cocktails...

No it's assault. Your free speech ends where my rights begin. Public officials have a right not to be assaulted while preforming lawful activities.
