Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy - US News and World Report

President Barack Obama's approval rating is plummeting in the midst of American dissatisfaction with the recent privacy controversies and other scandals.

The president's approval rating is 45 percent, marking an 8-point drop in the last month, according to a CNN survey. Weighing down on the Obama administration are the revelations of government domestic spying programs, the Justice Department's secret pursuit of journalists' phone records, the Internal Revenue Service's inappropriate scrutiny of conservative political groups seeking tax-exemption status, as well as the lingering questions over the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya, last fall.
"The drop in Obama's support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point decline over the past month among people under 30, who, along with black Americans, had been the most loyal part of the Obama coalition," says Keating Holland, polling director for CNN. "It is clear that revelations about NSA surveillance programs have damaged Obama's standing with the public, although older controversies like the IRS matter may have begun to take their toll as well."
Obama needs to clean up his act.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

I listened to O'reiily for the first time in years it would seem, and his advice to BO was just to come out and explain everything, and be truthful.

And thats related to Benghazzi, Fast and Furious and the Benghazzi scandal.

The truth is he CAN'T, because he's neck deep in everyone of these scandals.

So he will continue yo spiaral down and he'll rake the Democrats with him while attempting every low life trick in the book to pull focus away from the scandals.

Oh that reminds me of Elijah Cummings attempt to deal with the IRS harrasment Scandal.

" It's Over"...LOL.

If there was better evidence to show just how corrupt and how deep that scandal goes I havn't seen it yet. Cummings basically admitted the IRS scandal has WH implications.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

Rubio,Graham and McCain will help him get his groove back with this immigration fiasco.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

Just the price you pay for being transparent.

Hes NOT being transparent, thats part of the problem.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

Social justice by any means necessary. The Lefties say HE WON; well someone reminded one of them in another thread.....so did Nixon. Winning doesn't mean he owns the government, he needs to learn a lesson the hard way.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

Obama can't change. It's who he is and he doesn't know any different.

Could this be the start of a trend? Two Black Democrats Become Republicans in Louisiana - Star Parker - Page 2

“…the value system I was raised up with, it really doesn’t side with the Democrats...Some of the things I see happening today, with the entitlement programs, we have to change. We can’t continue doing the things we are doing and survive.”
Blacks tried the social justice route for almost 50 years, and nothing has changed for them. But getting a couple of guys from Louisianna to see the light, hardly is a fart in a tornado. It's nothing. Black leadership is still stuck on stupid, thinking that promoting a free ride will achieve social acceptance and prosperity for their people. Whites are successful, and blacks think if they do the opposite they'll be succesful too, but in a black way. The right way isn't color coded, and has nothing to do with who invented it. This whole Uncle Tom stuff is all about "not invented here". It's pride....too prideful to try what works. So they try to reinvent the wheel, but instead of a round wheel like the one whites use, they invent a square one (the free ride approach) trying to defy the laws of economics. Any black who wants to use a round wheel is labeled an Uncle Tom and a sell out. Trouble is they won't give it up, and try something different. The model has been right in front of them all along, they just don't like it....... not invented here.

But back on Obama, look how he achieved success....not with a square wheel.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

He won't. He doesn't care. He kept all this stuff out of the public eye long enough to get elected...that's all that matters to him. Oh...and avoiding any direct connection to all these scandals.

I don't see him taking much heat for any of this stuff...but I also don't see him being a very effective President. I don't complain. Come 2014, Republicans will gain in Congress...come 2016, Republicans will get it all. Then it'll be their turn on the hot seat.

You meant, the price you pay for other people being transparent for you.

And if we grant amnesty to illegals, the people MOST hurt will be black Americans. They think they're unemployment rate is high now? Just watch.

Somehow, conservatives have to win this to protect our black American brethren. They are once again voting against their own interests.

I don't know if the narrative of how white people be like this and black people be like that is really helpful.

He has already explained it...

Get used to it.

Yeah, we never want to look at the results of existing data. I was responding to his post about a couple of blacks changing "sides", and how that doesn't mean **** because it doesn't address the problem. But this is somewhat off topic. The thread is really about Obama's scandals fallout.

That's fine but scandels themselves don't solve problems, what has been done to solve the problems that resulted in Benghazi, the IRS, the NSA wiretappings, etc, etc? If its a problem, where's the solution? Instead of we just have people pointing out the problem over and over again without offering any solution.

I realize it is just two people, but they are people with influence in an area where there is a large Black population.
Black leadership is still stuck on stupid
Not all Black leaders. Certainly those in the NAACP won't change quickly but there are leaders outside the traditional Black tents who are speaking out and, I believe, will eventually make a difference. The Jesse Jackson/ Al Sharpton types are history.

Of course there is the possibility I'm being too optimistic, but unless they do change course their downward direction will remain the same. Maybe they're beginning to realize that.

Indeed. Where are the solutions? Who is responsible? Ironically...the only people we KNOW about are not being fired, they are being promoted.

The first step to the solution would be to elect leaders who have some significant experience in leadership and management, and with a proven track record. Electing anyone based only on the color of their skin, with only trite slogans to offer, is certainly not what MLK was all about and not what is required for being President of the world's only remaining Superpower. Repeating the error did not say much for the American electorate or their willingness to solve the nations problems.

To me this all started with the Tea Party. I know, seems unrelated. But we haven't seen a new "party" influence politics in Washington since the party that Teddy Roosevelt invented. The much hated Tea Party has shaped elections since 2010. Anyway, the Tea Party represents a group of people that is fed up with the way things have been going in Washington. In this case taxes and big govt. But Washington has been scandal plagued for some time. And more and more people are getting fed up with Washington as a whole. Frankly I think the "Tea Party" concept is going to get bigger, although it may not reflected in the number of Tea Party candidates winning. It's not really a party, but a movement that stand for "enough is enough". Obama's scandals are adding to the frustration. A couple of blacks jumping ship is an indication, but most blacks are not ready to jump ship especial with a black president in office. Obama has not delivered his social justice promises, and blacks are frustrated. I don't think you'll see many blacks move to the right (or toward non-left) until after Obama is gone. It'll be long and slow, because the Left will continue promising and not delivering cause the budget for the gravy train isn't there anymore.

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

Obama is just too complicated for the average American, and so the comments on this forum will reflect that. We can only hope that a more sophisticated majority is starting to get it. Obama has done more than any other president in making the preliminary steps toward world peace. He knows only too well that America needs to separate itself from the dependence on ME oil. That of course allows the US to bring all it's armed forces out of the ME. And that's the only beginning needed to the US returning to what it was before Bush2.

The screams of protest over this will likely begin with claims that Obama is now engaging in a new war in Syria. That's a big mistake as it's now become painfully obvious that Obama has been dragging his feet on getting involved with Syria for months. He is being forced into taking a position when in fact, he knows just as everyone else should know, the chem/bio weapons charge against Assad is another trumped up lie that is every bit as obvious as the lies for Iraq were.

This attitude in the US will likely not change and in fact everything positive Obama has strived to accomplish could be quickly reversed by the next president regardless of whether it's a Dem or a Repub.

And as I stated above, the hope is that there is a more sophisticated silent majority lurking behind the scenes who are more understanding and don't have their hands tied right from the beginning by their racist hate problems.

Not in your lifetime will you be able to come to the understanding that the tea party is Al Quaida's finest asset from within the belly of the beast. I use the term rhetorically for the comedy value! Because honestly, it is comedy!

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

this morning, ron fournier, longtime associated press dc bureau chief, now editor of the elite natl journal and regular msnbc contributor:

Do You Trust This Man? - NationalJournal.com

There is a common element to the so-called Obama scandals—the IRS targeting of conservatives, the fatal attack in Benghazi, and widespread spying on U.S. journalists and ordinary Americans. It is a lack of credibility. In each case, the Obama administration has helped make controversies worse by changing its stories, distorting facts, and lying.

The abuse of trust may be taking a toll on President Obama's reputation. A CNN/ORC poll of 1,104 adult Americans June 11-13 shows the president's job approval rating at 45 percent, down 8 percentage points in a month.

Among young voters, only 48 percent approve of the president's performance, a 17-point decline since the last CNN/ORC poll. These are the president's most loyal supporters, and the future of American politics.

Asked for the first time by CNN/ORC about the president's handling of "government surveillance of U.S. citizens," 61 percent of Americans said they disapprove.

A month into Obama's presidency, 74 percent of Americans answered "yes," saying the terms "honest and trustworthy" applied to him. As you would expect, the percentage dropped a few months later but had remained steady at about 60 percent since November 2009, according to CNN/ORC. This month, only 49 percent of Americans say Obama is honest and trustworthy. That is a 9-point drop since May 17-18.

This should worry Obama and his team because it has echoes of what destroyed the Bush presidency. After waging war in Iraq on false pretenses and trying to spin his way out of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, Bush saw his trustworthy numbers tumble. Voters stopped listening to Bush. Political allies abandoned him (as I wrote in 2005). His presidency was effectively over (as I wrote in 2007).

Obama can take solace in the fact that the CNN/ORC survey is just one poll. Others may show that his credibility has not slipped, although Democratic pollsters tell me privately the CNN/ORC findings reflect their own.

If this poll is part of a trend, Obama still may be able to recover. But he would need to take immediate steps to show accountability, transparency, and credibility.

No more slow-walking the truth as the White House did with the cause of the Benghazi attacks and with the names of West Wing officials notified about IRS targeting.

No more lies, such as the IRS claiming for months that the targeting did not take place, and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper denying the existence of the NSA programs weeks before they were revealed.

No more doublespeak such as the president earnestly claiming, "Your duly elected representatives have consistently been informed" of the NSA programs. He knew that wasn't true, or should have known.

Obama needs to take action, too.

The IRS scandal needs to be aggressively investigated, with the seizure of White House and Obama campaign e-mails as well as interviews, under oath, with members of Obama's team. Those responsible for the abuse must be punished. The USA Patriot Act needs to be debated and amended, and the public needs to be part of that debate.

There is no time to waste. Obama already has earned the ignominious distinction of running against Bush's surveillance programs, then adapting it as president, and expanding it. Does he also want to repeat his predecessor's credibility crisis?

I've heard a lot from Obama apologists, but your post wins the gold ring for it's sheer liberal BS rationalizations.

"Obama is just too complicated..."

Take your liberal, "I know more about what's good for you than you do", attitude and shove it. We don't need a "complicated" leader, a "complicated" foreign policy or a "complicated" government. Keep It Simple, Stupid! Besides, even if we were completely independent of ME oil, we would STILL be intimately involved in the affairs of that region. Our allies depend on that oil, too.

"...Obama is now engaging in a new war in Syria..."

The only reason Obama is dragging his feet in regards to Syria is because he's trying to figure out a way of getting involved without having to take the lead. Just like he did with Libya. Your claims about trumped up chem/bio weapons charges is BS.

"...could be quickly reversed..."

One could only hope that will happen. He's screwed things up enough...we need to quickly dump all his crap.

"...by their racist hate problems."

Why am I not surprised? After all the other horse**** you posted, you just HAD to end it all by playing the race card. Give me a freakin' break!

Re: Obama's Popularity Plunges Amid Controversy

It was the surveillance and his dismissive response to it that it did it. Prior to the NSA leaks, his ratings were solid through Benghazi, the IRS, et al. The NSA leaks and, particularly his response to them, screwed him even among his supporters. He really ****ed up and my impression is that he doesn't even care.
