CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson revealed in May that her computer had been compromised. When asked about the situation, CBS News responded with a statement that it was conducting an investigation.

That investigation has reached the following conclusions, according to CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair:

“A cyber security firm hired by CBS News has determined through forensic analysis that Sharyl Attkisson’s computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions late in 2012. Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data.

Now why would the DOJ issue a response regarding the hacking of Ms. Attkisson's computers? I wonder if her phones and those of her family were also tapped too?

She mentioned that her computers at home were also involved in this.

This was about the time she was reporting on Benghazi. Apparently this was a hack with a high level of sophistication.

So..... who might that be?

CBS News reporter Sharyl Attkisson revealed in May that her computer had been compromised. When asked about the situation, CBS News responded with a statement that it was conducting an investigation. That investigation has reached the following conclusions, according to CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair:

A cyber security firm hired by CBS News has determined through forensic analysis that Sharyl Attkisson’s computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions late in 2012. Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data.

This party also used sophisticated methods to remove all possible indications of unauthorized activity, and alter system times to cause further confusion.

CBS News is taking steps to identify the responsible party and their method of access.

The Attkisson-computer story surfaced when Attkisson appeared on a Philadelphia radio program amid the news about the Justice Department’s snooping on reporters. WPHT 1210 host Chris Stigall asked Attkisson whether she’d been the victim of any such tactics. She responded, “Well, um, I’m not ready to fully speak publicly about some things that have affected me because I’m trying to be methodical and careful about what I say, but there has been an issue in my house and there’s been an issue with my computers that’s gone on for quite a long time that we’re looking into.”

The CBS News reporter was then asked whether her issue related to the experience of Fox News reporter James Rosen, who’d been the target of Justice Department snooping. She responded: “Well, I don’t know details of his — I only know what I’ve read but I think there could be some relationship between these types of things and what’s happened to me.”

The Justice Department issued this statement not long after Attkisson’s claims:

"To our knowledge, the Justice Department has never compromised Ms. Attkisson’s computers, or otherwise sought any information from or concerning any telephone, computer, or other media device she may own or use."

Sharyl Attkisson's computers compromised - POLITICO.com

ms attkisson really blew out three bombshells outta benghazi

the first appeared on may 5, it simply foretold what the 3 whistleblowing witnesses were gonna say to evil issa

mark hicks, acting mission chief upon the death of stevens, would say they were all screaming for help, send reinforcements, only to be left "helpless and abandoned"

"what about aviano?" the besieged ambassador begged

"no"

hicks testified that "everyone in the mission thought it was a terrorist attack from the get go"

mark thompson, asst secty for counterterrorism, told the interrogators he and his csg, counterterrorsim security group, the vehicle designed especially "to react to these kinds of things," was locked out of the response (what response?) as well as the (partial, therefore, by definition) post-incident review conducted by the arb

hicks, thompson and "others whose accounts are at odds with official government statements about benghazi have reported feeling marginalized, intimidated and/or subjected to threats of retaliation"

attkisson's second scoop was printed the next day, may 6

it reported the stand down order issued to lt col gibson as the response team was loading that lonely c130 in tripoli

"in stark contrast to assertions from the obama administration"

the phone call said, "you can't go, you do not have the authority to go"

then, very strangely, ms atkisson was contacted (may 17) by some half dozen members of the white house staff, who whispered to her "on condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments"

it was "incompetence rather than malice or coverup," they assured her, that led to the stunning series of failures and misfortunes which befell our forces in africa in the weeks and months preceding the attack, the 8 hours of violence themselves, as well as the 9 months which have ensued since

"we're the idiots," was the white house word, passed on to the public by the spied upon reporter from the luce group

we shoulda dispatched fest, owns up the admin, we shoulda "convened" thompson's csg, our in-extremis force shouldn't have been training in croatia (on 9-11), we shouldn't have said spontaneous protest, shouldn't have blamed the video, shoulda released the email chain that resulted in scrubbing the truth ("terrorists with ties to al qaeda," "jihad" and "ansar al sharia") while leaving in the lie ("spontaneous demonstrations")...

except the self described "idiots" have still NOT released that email chain, have they?

do you find obama's behavior a bit bizarre?

"it was a mistake not using the word terrorism," they whisper to attkisson so she can shout it to the world

the put upon reporter: "even today no one will say, on the record or even off, who was at the deputies' meeting on sept 15," the day before susan-rice-sunday, "where the talking points were dramatically pared down"

why?

why not?

Beside the point, why don't you respond to the content, rather than the placement of the article? If the powers that be care to move it to "Breaking News" let them.

H'm were secret warrants signed off by Eric Holder, or did he recuse himself. Then again was this like and electronic Water-Gate incident?

I think it's significant news that her computer was tampered with and this story is not suitable for a partisan debate. let's get this investigated and let the chips fall where they fall. I am not interested playing partisan politics on this story.

Re: CBS News Confirms Multiple Breaches Of Sharyl Attkisson's Computer

wapo:

The intrusions were detected in December, when Attkisson was reporting almost exclusively on the government’s response to the terrorist attacks on a U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya. The attack on Sept. 11, 2012, killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens. Attkisson has previously investigated the Department of Justice’s gun-tracking operation known as “Fast and Furious.”

Attkisson said she had noticed unusual activity in her CBS-issued laptop and her home computer, such as dormant computers spontaneously “waking up” at odd hours. The unusual activity, which also had included disruptions on her home phone line, predate the December 2012 breach that CBS confirmed.

She said in an interview Friday that she was “outraged” by the breach, which did not appear to be aimed at extracting personal financial information.

“This wasn’t any ordinary malware of a phishing attempt,” that is, an effort to gain personal information, she said. “I assume someone wanted to see what I was working on.”

“The privacy and security of every American citizen in his own home, not to mention the work of a journalist, is sacrosanct. The idea that an unknown party could come into your home electronically is upsetting and disturbing. . . . People should be disturbed that a reporter would be spied on and intimidated this way. I do feel that this was an attempt to make me feel intimidated.”

Come on Pete, It became partisan when the first shoes were dropped about the spying on the AP and Jim Rosen with Eric Holder the center of the controversy. This is the same issue. Were warrants issued or as I suggested a criminal undercover operation? Shouldn't we call for an in depth investigation covering all three incidents bypassing Holder's stonewalling?

Re: CBS News Confirms Multiple Breaches Of Sharyl Attkisson's Computer

The Justice Department has issued a categorical denial that they had anything to do with the breach. But whether or not you’re inclined to believe them, it’s far more likely that Atkisson’s computer was compromised by much more prosaic means, the same way millions of other computers have been hacked — by a virus or a worm that gained access via Atkisson’s own insecure practices.".

With all that has come out lately on Obama's white house and with Attkisson's history it is far more likely our gov behind this.

Nonpartisan is good. The trouble is that the bare facts seem to suggest partisanship is involved:

Attkisson: Someone hacked my computer.

DoJ: We didn't do it!!

It all depends on how DoJ proceeds. Appointing a special prosecutor would be good. Investigating it themselves and then having the FBI slow walk it would not be good.

Then who and where should this be debated? Oh, I know let's bury it somewhere people won't hear about it at all.

Re: CBS News Confirms Multiple Breaches Of Sharyl Attkisson's Computer

So, someone hacked Attkisson's computer.
and the Obama administration had reason to want to hack it.
maybe.

What did the hacker gain from all of this? If it was someone in the administration, what was gained? Were they able to cover something up?
If it was someone else, who, and what was gained?

I think the crux of the question is, what did the hacker get out of accessing her computer? From there, perhaps we could make an educated guess as to just who that person was.

Re: CBS News Confirms Multiple Breaches Of Sharyl Attkisson's Computer

The Justice Department has issued a categorical denial that they had anything to do with the breach.
Of course, with this administration such a denial could mean they had nothing to do with it, but could just as easily mean that they simply chose to provide "the least untruthful answer" regarding their criminal intrusion.

Could be that she was hacked because someone was dying to know who got who on the Secret Santa list... but I sort of doubt it :D

LGF thinks it's just a coincidence, then. Well...

It doesn't look like Johnson (of LGF) read the report. The description of the attack doesn't fit a virus or worm.

Here is what the report said:

Eugene H. Spafford, a Purdue University professor and specialist in computer security, said that Attkisson’s initial statements about computer intrusions left open a wide field of possibilities, from viruses to botnet activity to acquaintances to criminal gangs to the government. The Erik Wemple Blog asked Spafford for his take after looking over the CBS News statement. “The details given are too sparse to really be able to say anything new,” he responded.

CBS News announced Friday that correspondent Sharyl Attkisson's computer was hacked by "an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions," confirming Attkisson's previous revelation of the hacking.

CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair said that a cybersecurity firm hired by CBS News "has determined through forensic analysis" that "Attkisson's computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions in late 2012."

The fun is only beginning in all of these investigations. The Congress is hopefully going to grow a pair and appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the DOJ. Holder is obviously a corrupt and corrupted mouthpiece for the Obama Administration and needs to be tracked and held to account.

If all of the investigations are run through the DOJ, we will never find out what's going one and we will be the laughing stock of the world. In no time we'll find that the UN will send Egyptians to monitor our elections. And we'll be thankful that they have come to help clean up the mess.

If we can insert a reputable and honest person into the AG's office, we have a chance of finding out what's going on. Of course we will only get more of Obama's henchmen in there so there's no real hope of working any good through the DOJ to control the DOJ.
