Mexican-American boy's national anthem sparks racist comments - CNN.com <-- clicky

(CNN) -- An 11-year-old boy's rendition of the national anthem at Game 3 of the NBA finals brought the usual appreciative applause Tuesday, but outside AT&T Center in San Antonio, his performance brought a darker reaction from some posters on social media -- and eventually an online backlash against their racist comments.

Here's video:

-- "Why they got a Mexican kid singing the national anthem -___-" from Daniel Gilmore.

-- "How you singing the national anthem looking like an illegal immigrant" from Andre Lacey, proud father and firefighter from Augusta, Georgia.

-- "Why is a foreigner singing the national anthem. I realize that's San Antonio but that still ain't Mexico" from Lewie Groh.

-- "Who let this illegal alien sing our national anthem?" from Matt Cyrus.

It's embarrassing to be an American sometimes.....

He was born in San Antonio. Just as American, probably more, than the asshats making the comments.

Nothing racist about wondering if a Mexican-looking kid was chosen to sing our national anthem while millions of illegal immigrants are in the process of being rewarded for breaking into our country, marching down our streets with their flags, demanding that we speak their language, educate their children and cut them welfare checks...all while smearing anyone who objects as a bigot.

Seriously, lay down this mindless, hysterical race-card. You have UTTERLY overplayed and discredited it at this point and it carries ZERO weight.

We should never stand down when it comes to racism.

There weren't "wondering" in their comments aquapub, they were assuming. All brown people are illegals = racism, or at least xenophobia.

BTW, weight is the word for which you were looking.

What do YOU look like. Hateful comments based upon what someone looks like is the product of a sick mind.

We should never militantly obsess over race to such a level of absolute hysteria that any and every issue can be race-baited into a controversy, which is what is happening here. Americans are right to wonder if this is another attempt to shove Mexico down our throats. It happens non-stop.

It's not hateful. We're being overrun by foreign criminals. It's a pretty minor infraction to assume he's one of the MILLIONS while such insanity is being forced on us.

He is an American. He does not look like you. I am sure he is glad. Get over it.

And no, simply being born in America doesn't make someone an American, contrary to everything we're told. Birthright citizenship is a myth. The proponents of the 14h Amendment even swore at the time that it would never be misinterpreted to grant citizenship to people simply by being born here. The other requirement is listed plainly "...and subject to the jurisdiction thereof..."

If you aren't subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, and were simply born here, according to the drafters of the 14th Amendment themselves, that does not make you a citizen.

Just saying.

As the OP said:

Why would it matter where the kid was born?

He sang an absolutely wonderful rendition of the National Anthem.
He did it better than probably 90% of all Americans could ever do it.

He's a CHILD for christ sakes.

Some people are truly disgusting.

Nice "counterpoint."

The author of the 14th Amendment, Sen. Jacob Howard of Michigan: "This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers."

See also the 1884 case Elk v. Wilkins, in which the Supreme Court ruled that the 14th Amendment didn't apply to Native Americans, because they weren't "subject to the jurisdiction" of the U.S.

So again, the comments were probably not incorrect. The kid is not automatically an American just by being born here, and it is not some vile, racist hate crime for people to wonder if this choice was part of the same non-stop PC agenda to shove illegal immigrants down our throats.

I see CNN is up to its old tricks pushing their race baiting narrative. Im not condoning those peoples comments, but who are these people who made those comments? they are nobodies. just some asshats on tweeter. there is nothing that is done now days that you wont find negative comments made by a few. you could put the most patriotic person up there to sing the national anthem, a solider that lost both legs and arms, and people would post negative comments

All this is is an attempt by CNN to push a narrative that the reason people are against illegal align amnesty is the result of racism

Agreed. And their comments probably weren't even technically incorrect. At worst, they are guilty of mistaking this as being a part of the overall crusade by the news media, academia and Hollywood to normalize and mainstream illegal immigrants (future Democrat voters).

And cheap workers for the right. I beleive there have been a few Republican presidents since 1868 or whatever that was when the 14th was ratified. not exactly shoved down anyones throat. I hate it when you guys say "shoved down our throat." It just sounds silly.

That's the very definition of racism - treating on individual differently because of the actions or characteristics (actual or assumed) of other people who happen to be in the same racial grouping.

You could make an argument that it's not bad or wrong but you can't deny that it is discrimination by definition.

Incoherent response...???

And many proponents at the time disagreed with with Howard's interpretation. And Native Americans HAVE been found to be subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, so they are obviously born citizens. The only children NOT born citizens when born in the US are the children of diplomats because they are not, in fact subject to our jurisdiction. Immigrants, even undocumented ones, are most certainly subject to our jurisdiction.

With all the problems our country is facing right now, I find it hard to believe that people are so concerned about some little boy singing the National Anthem at an event.

It's no unassailable position that these commenters took, but don't break into their country by the millions and rape their system and then act all indignant when they get sensitive about it.

Yeah, why would the AUTHOR of the 14th Amendment know better what it meant than other random people who were pushing it?

And the Supreme Court has trampled the Constitution more than just about anything. Simply saying that they up and decided something doesn't make it so. These are the people who legalized slavery, for God's sake. They hilariously deemed Obamacare constitutional. They are AT WAR with the Constitution as much as the REST of the Federal Government at this point.

They may have invented birthright citizenship out of thin air, but that doesn't make it legitimate.

It's not about the boy. It's about this invasion of criminals breaking into our country, bankrupting our system and being protected by Democrats as Rome burns.
