Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily [W:452]

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

Been going on since Bush. If you supported the Patriot Act, you're part of the problem. Status Quo, this ain't just Obama. Obama is merely Bush II.

You're such a partisan!11!1!!1!!1 How dare you bring Bush in this discussion!11!!!!!!11!! :2razz:

(PS. I got lambasted for saying pretty much the same thing.)

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

What about the outrage by the liberal media at the Bush administration back in 2007 over this issue and the lack of outrage by the same liberal media now. Another double standard?

Lack of outrage now?

I once went to a link that lead me to a site that housed a good article on something. Thinking it was an interesting outlet, I signed up for their daily email blast of the top articles. I pretty much have not gone there since because all of the suggested reading does not really appeal to me. It's mostly crazy far left wing stuff, with some of it bordering of conspiracy theories and other kooky notions.

My blast today featured articles about how Obama is a big disappointment and how even the fringe are not happy with him. I can guarantee that most Democrats are NOT happy.

PS. I just went to Democratic Underground and the top post of the day is this:

If you're OK with revelations of NSA snooping, you're part of the problem

I'm not aware of any mass spying on US citizens during the Bush era but he & the politicians that passed that Legislation were foolish & nieve enough not to think that a Tyrant may someday abuse it. I think we now have that Tyrant. Really!..... dont mess with this Chicago gangster, if you disagree with him & even if you dont he can tap your phone, he can read your internet & E-mails, he can take your guns, he can audit your ass & take things away. He can leave you in some Islamic hell hole to die and then lie about it to cover up. ect. ect. ect.

Although I dont by any means give Bush a pass on his part in making todays mess there is no way that his behavior comes close to Obama's best impersonation of a Latin American Banana Republic Dictator.

Yeah, but those are just partisan deflections. The problem is with the Republocrats, and I don't know how to make that any more clear when it is so obviously the case. If you support the status quo, you will get the status quo. End of story. Bush and Obama have both worked in grand ways to destroy the freedoms and liberties of the individual; and if people keep supporting the Republocrats we're just going to end up with more of that. Obviously.

Partisan deflection serves only the status quo.

His behavior is right on order with Obama. Obama has done nothing but expand Bush policies.

co-conspirators, comrades?

The U.S. Department of Justice may try seeking out the source of a bombshell article that revealed National Security Agency surveillance of millions of Americans, according to NBC News Justice correspondent Pete Williams.

On Thursday’s "Morning Joe," New York City Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson asked if [The Guardian's Glenn] Greenwald would be investigated and suggested the White House would face many questions about the Guardian story.

“They may not be prepared to answer that question,” Wolfson said. “But given what happened with Fox, given what happened with AP, that will be a very hot topic today.”

Williams, a well-sourced reporter who just interviewed Attorney General Eric Holder last night about the leak investigations, jumped in with an answer.

I was told last night: definitely there will be a leak investigation,” he said.

On MSNBC's "Daily Rundown" later Thursday morning, Williams slightly walked back his earlier comments from certainty to near certainty. "It seems highly likely this will trigger a leak investigation," he told host Chuck Todd.

While no investigation is yet underway, Williams said, "It just seems very likely, given the sensitivity of this document, that there will be one."

it all depends on who has the hunch

the guardian's greenwald tweeted:

Dear DOJ: your bullying tactics will scare some sources, but they embolden others, who realize what USG is becoming.

Former Republican congressman and Libertarian Prez candidate Bob Barr said a bit back that presidents tend to take the ceiling built by the previous president and make it their floor and build upon that making a new ceiling.

a senator uniquely positioned

Rand Paul introduces bill preventing phone record access | The Daily Caller

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul will introduce legislation to prevent the government from searching the phone records of Americans without a warrant based on probable cause when the Senate returns to session Friday.

“The revelation that the [National Security Agency] has secretly seized the call records of millions of Americans, without probable cause, represents an outrageous abuse of power and a violation of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution,” Paul said, announcing his intent to introduce the “Fourth Amendment Restoration Act of 2013.”

“I have long argued that Congress must do more to restrict the Executive’s expansive law enforcement powers to seize private records of law-abiding Americans that are held by a third-party,” he said.

Paul’s bill would halt the National Security Agency’s surveillance of Americans’ phone records and prevent any other “agency of the United States Government to search the phone records of Americans without a warrant based on probable cause.”

“The bill restores our Constitutional rights and declares that the Fourth Amendment shall not be construed to allow any agency of the United States government to search the phone records of Americans without a warrant based on probable cause,” Paul added.

Last year a Paul amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 — which would have extended Fourth Amendment protections to electronic communications by requiring specific warrants to obtain that information — failed to pass a floor vote.

In May, Paul introduced the Fourth Amendment Preservation and Protection Act of 2013, which also would extend Fourth Amendment guarantees to electronic communications.

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

I hope that a bill is quickly introduced and finds enthusiastic bipartisan support. This issue goes to the heart of our freedoms and should be above "party."

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

White House spokesman Josh Earnest defended the administration’s ongoing tracking of domestic phone calls in a conversation with reporters Thursday.

The surveillance is allowed by a “robust legal regime” that reviews the use of the government powers under the Patriot Act “to ensure that they comply with the Constitution,” Earnest claimed, according to a White House pool report.

“Authorities that are referenced by this reported order are something that have been in place for a number of years now,” Earnest continued.

He declined to answer several questions about the specifics of the surveillance.

Earnest also deflected a question about whether President Barack Obama approved of the surveillance that is conducted in his administration.

“This strict regime reflects the president’s desire to strike the right balance between protecting our national security and protecting constitutional rights and civil liberties,” he said, without describing the protections for Americans, or the system’s ability to track terrorists and their supporters.

No, it's supposed to be about the glorious days of transparency.

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

Well, that's a depressing architecture.

Powers given to an executive almost never are given back. This is what all the howling was about back when they pushed the giant patriot act bill through congress after introduced just the night before. No one read it and Senator Feingold was the only Senator to vote against it because people were ceding to Bush anything he wanted after the attack on our soil and Cheney was constantly screaming "Unitarian Executive! Unitarian Executive! Unitarian Executive!" because he wanted he and Bush to have as much dictatorial power as possible. Bob Barr saw this and left the GOP to run for prez in 2008 as a Libertarian and that's why he ran on that premise about how executive powers constantly grow.

And the way our legislature is now they are all too willing to give the executive all that power because then they can sit back and assume no responsibility for what goes on.

Here's a fine example of that. Here is John Boehner today commenting on this wire tapping...

"I trust the president will explain to the American people why the administration considers this a critical tool in protecting our nation from threat of terrorist attack," Boehner said at a weekly press briefing.

"Why isn't the burden also on you to explain why this act was passed?" a reporter pressed.

"The tools were given to the administration, and it's the administration's responsibility to explain how these tools are used," Boehner added. "And I'm hopeful we'll see these answers soon."

Our government is just terrible.

Obama could have stopped this if he wanted to. Since this program has expanded exponentially under his watch, he cannot pass the buck.

He is now in his second term, any mention of Bush will simply be acknowledged as " I got my hand caught in the cookie jar, and I have nothing else to fall back on.

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

May not be so shocking when they learn that the call records for their extra-marital trysts are now in O's possession.

I'm likely missing your point, but it should be noted I don't agree with this any more now than I did with Bush.

They have had 12 years to repeal these laws. The time for "But Obama..." has come and gone

All 3 branches of our government share responsibility. The NSA couldn't get away with this without a judge signing off on it and Congressional approval.

He can't be come and gone when he is still the commander and chief/president.

I harbor little sympathy for congressmen who sit on either side of the isle. They have been complicit in this. At least the ones who are read on to such programs.
