Roy Hibbert Uses Gay Slur in Post Game Press Conference

No Homo....?

;)

see, I was going to hit that because it was so obvious, but I figured I would fall prey to the same needless over reaction

That's what she said ;)

(just in case certain people are wondering, no...there is not a literal woman I know that said that)

given the reaction here, it's not really surprising more people were not critical of Collins coming out. I mean, it's not like professional sports is known to be the most PC and enlightened crowd, so I doubt everyone was actually like "cool"

Guess it's a good thing he didn't describe his defense on James as niggardly or he would have had to not only apologize to everyone in the country but probably retire from the league!

Because insulting someone is not OK. For example - Do you think it's OK to say the n-word? Most people don't, and that's not even a liberal/conservative thing. Plus, he wasn't giving his opinion of Jason Collins as a person or as a ball player. He wasn't giving his opinion about homosexuality in general. He used the term "homo" as an insult toward LeBron James. Can you tell the difference?
Actually, it wasn't an insult towards Lebron if you know the usage of the phrase. It's normally used in the same vein as the phrase "That's what she said" ie a statement that has nothing to do with sex (in this case, homosexual sex) but could be misconstrued or twisted to mean something sexual ie "Man, that was hard." when speaking of a workout but to which someone else says "That's what she said" thereby twisting it into a sexual statement. Why do I know this much about it? I spend all day with 18-21 year old Marines.

Fag, homo, queer etc etc etc

This is an overreaction IMO. How is it okay for Jason Collins to proclaim his sexuality but not okay for Roy Hibbert to say what he said? The sexual preference of public figures is something that homosexuals use constantly to further their cause. When the other side says something, I don't believe it to be proper for the gay community and/or gay supporters to attempt to shame them or muzzle them. Simple as that.

I agree that people freaking out about this are overreacting (because frankly who gives a ****), but do you honestly not see the difference between talking about your own sexuality and insulting someone else's? How are those not obviously different things to you?

It'd be the same as the difference between you pointing out that you're from (e.g.) Alabama (I have no idea where you're actually from), and me calling you a redneck hick. Apples and oranges.

More likely its time for some un-sensitivity training, The fashion these days is for everyone to get upset if there is a possibility that someone, somewhere, might be offended. It's much like Victorianism at the turning of the 19th Century to the 20 Century. They felt they were being 'progressive' also.

So another basketball player was called a "homo". All that demonstrates is that the player who said it is ignorant, but when intelligence becomes the main criteria in professional sports we can expect the quality of the athletes to be severely lowered. I'm certain that the subject of the slur was man enough to take it.

My youngest son is Gay and if he heard that he would not find it offense, only stupid. We can't fine people for being unwittingly stupid for conversation however. That only creates bitterness, resentment, and drives the talk underground. This will most likely create more problems in the locker rooms rather than less. We're just not likely to hear about it.

here's the old days

many years ago there was a short basketball player named Calvin Murphy. Norwalk CT-to Niagra to the NBA. he might have been the most coordinated man on earth-he used to do a half time show with twirling batons that was a thing of awe. He also was one of the baddest toughest guys in pro ball

Boston had a power forward named Sydney Wicks Wicks was 6-9 a foot taller then Murphy

in one game Murphy was going into score and wicks hammered him. Murphy made some comment that Wicks was a "fag" (there was a rumor in the league Wicks was gay). Wicks took a swing at Murphy who jumped up-grabbed Wicks' fro and proceeded to beat the living crap out of the foot taller guy

Well i'm certainly glad there's an ignore function. Grow the **** up.

I'm still skeptical that the reaction to Collins wasn't planned ahead of time, given that the NBA was the last place I'd expect an athlete to come out. Well, other than the NFL, which epitomizes the neanderthal jock mentality. The thing is though it's so easy to say anything negative on twitter, and Hibbert just perfectly demonstrated how they don't always fall in line. Calling the media 'mother ****ers' at a press conference is like, the oldest no-no in the book. So i don't know. Either way, some of the comments here are a ****ing disgrace compared to what Hibbert said.

I wonder what Rudy Gay thought of the whole episode? :)

Point is, words don't mean chit.

Not comfortable in your own skin? words make you feel depressed? there's therapy for that.

He was censured by the NBA. If you have a problem with a specific policy of the NBA, why don't you bring it to their attention rather than going off on one of your usual miserable misplaced spew episodes?..................

He didn't say anything about the NBA. He simply made a partisan comment.

I agree.

Political correctness is epic bull****.

Call someone a fat retard all you want but god forbid you call them a fag, nigger or whatever...

It makes no sense.

I would never apologize.

In what universe should minorities (sexual/racial/religious etc) be immune from being insulted? In what universe should they be treated better than anyone else? What makes them so Goddamn special?

Sometimes these things can best be handled personally, the way Calvin Murphy. As it is we have straight people telling us how to behave around Gays, White people telling us how to behave around Blacks, and so on.

The comedian Louis CK summed up the attitude of White Men pretty well, and that should be the response by everyone. The Calvin Murphy style is another excellent option. We should all calm down and allow the words to become meaningless. To me saying "The N word" is just as stupid, or more so, than saying 'nigger'.

As a private employer, the NBA has the right to set certain behavior standards for those that are employed by its franchises. If in my job, I called someone a derisive term, I'd likely be disciplined. As I should be.

If you don't like the NBA's regulation of player behavior, don't play pro basketball and don't purchase their product.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened if he replied to the media with "no delusional Christian, would that be a fine as well? :)

Not likely, but equally offensive. If the NBA or any organization is to have a none offensive policy, it better damn well be able to show consistency in enforcing it, or I smell lawsuits abound.

I watched the clip and maybe it's just me but ebonics must be in play coz I didn't get the no homo comment where he used it? Can someone explain it to me?

Tim-

I would not take offense of someone called me a heterosexual. It's true and I can live with the truth. So can most Gays. In fact I never heard Gays protest about this, only heterosexuals.

It won't take long for these 'slurs' to become shopworn if they just get the eye rolling they deserve.
Ya'd think, right? Yet, even with a lot of liberal leaning folks here on this site the first chance they get to drop an insult or attack somone, it frequently involves an implication that the other party in question night themselves be of questionable gender confidence. Implying homosexuality is apparently a real insult. But...being gay is no big deal, right?

I think what it ended up was he was saying he needed to be there for his teammate "but not in a gay way."

I use that on people who might feel insulted by it. Just like I say "hmmm...that sounds kind of 'liberal' to me" to someone who thinks "liberal is an insult." I had someone here think I was gay. I didn't take offense to it, though I did tell him I wasn't.

That's so gay.

Seriously...that makes it 'better'? And just out of curiosity when a black person is acting like a scumbag do you call them a nigger figuring that will insult them?
