Even without GMO panic, Monsanto makes a good boogeyman because they're basically Lex Luthor Industries in terms of business practices.

Now you are just being snide. Of course man has guided genetics for a long time. But straight up editing it acutely? New stuff. Gotta be sure they dont do with genetics what china does with melamine and milk. No shortcuts for quicker profit.
 
I find the irrational fear of GMO's to be silly, yet sad at the same time.

Yes, prices will go down if theres a surplus and the farmers can profit by selling more at a lower price. However, another possibility is that the govt (taxpayers) will pay the farmers to burn any surplus in order to artifically control prices. Much like they did in 1942 to a farmer who had the audacity to grow a little extra wheat to feed himself.

I think a lot of people know that but as mentioned above are more concerned about using unnatural means to modify things we eat. A healthy does of fear and caution is survival instinct.

Small Pox is natural.

Starvation is natural.

Nature provides lots and lots of yummy looking things that are lethally poisonous.

A large brain, opposable thumbs and an aggressive mindset bent upon subduing the world and everything in it is natural, and so leads us by a completely natural path to genetically modifying our food crops.

Profits are one of the most important things in the world, whether formalized by a structured economic system, the acquisition of land and freedom through warfare, or having minimal food to ensure the survival of one's children after flailing the Earth to force it to bring forth grain.

Profit should be spoken of reverentially, not dismissively.

That is why everybody is up in Monsanto's face. Basically they alter crop seeds so that the plant is resistant to roundup. This allows farmers to then spray their fields with roundup to kill the undesirables but keep the desirables. It allows farmers to plant rows closer together and get higher yields because the fields do not need as much regular maintenance to keep the weeds out. The harvested seeds are also roundup resistant. The terms of the contract they have with farmers prevents them from harvesting the seeds and reusing it, forcing the farmers to buy new seeds from Monsanto every year.

IMHO, all this GMO crap is a collateral attack on agribusinesses that have cornered some of the markets and people are pissed about it so they are creating some fake issue rather than be honest with their intentions.

I'm calling bull. I'm guessing that there is a more than decent chance that of the dozens of vaccines you have taken you know the backgrounds, trial history, and scientific details of almost none of them.

Anyway. I don't trust GMOs but I don't mistrust them completely. Technically, we, humanity, have been crossbreeding plants and vegetables and animals to get the desirable traits from them. GMOs are just the XXIth century way of doing that. But we have to wonder... has it gone to far? What are the risks? Who has oversight and reports if abuses are made? So while I don't mistrust the science behind creating genetically modified organisms (here, crops), I mistrust the people who are behind it.

What do you guys think about GMOs and about the fact that several countries have banned wheat imports from the USA for fear of GMO contaminated shipments of crops.

I have ZERO trust in the Corporatism for Profit motivation of AgriBusiness. Especially Monsanto. This is not an industry that you want to hear an "OOPS!" from.

How do you know they are proven? New vaccine variants are introduced frequently. It is highly likely that you have been given a vaccine that has not been tested over decades and I'm not just talking about flu shots. You know nothing about them, but you take them because you trust scientific consensus. The same should be true about GMO's.

It in fact not likely at all. I have not had any vaccines in 20 years other than Tetnus, which has decades of success. And I trust them because billions of people have taken them, not because scientists say its ok.
 
In 2011, Monsanto resumed field trials of herbicide-tolerant wheat in North Dakota and Hawaii and Roundup Ready wheat, which had been found in a single field in Oregon, could have been part of the company's decade-old experiment. Monsanto conducted eight Oregon field trials on herbicide-tolerant wheat between 1999 and 2002 and it's plausible that the company's Roundup Ready wheat had been released to nearby fields from test sites accidentally and the company is not completely honest about its decade-old programme.
