The Boy Scouts of America organisation has voted to welcome openly gay scouts, ending a divisive ban.But a ban on openly gay adult scout leaders will remain in place.
More than 60% of the national council, with 1,400 voting members, supported the change at a meeting in Texas.
The campaign over the ban pitted conservatives, especially religious groups that sponsor local scouting chapters, against liberals opposed to what they deem outdated discrimination.
The change is effective on 1 January.
The resolution repealing the ban "reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting," the Boy Scouts of America said in a statement.
"While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting."
The issue was put to the organisation's national board in February, but a decision was delayed until the larger council could decide.

BBC News - Boy Scouts of America votes to ease ban on gay members

Good for the Scouts.

And I eagerly await the freakishly hateful statements that will inevitably come from people like the Family Research Council.

Great news.

I never understood the ban. Gay boys can certainly be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

I support this. I'm sure there are rules against sexual conduct within the Scouts on trips and stuff and that's all that really needs to be done.

As I said before when gays were banned from the club and I will repeat now that they are not, the boy scouts have the right to make access decisions on who can join their club. I hope the opposing side that liked my posts in those threads will show everyone they have nothing against gays by liking this post as well.

It's not up to us to decide on who they want in their club and as I said before I really don't care one way or the other.

Long as they decided for themselves and didn't do it simply because of social pressure. They had all right to ban gays, but one more step for equality, right?

Now, I don't have to hear about this again. Lovely, we can move on.

The ban on openly gay adult leaders is still disgusting though.

Oh lovely! A glimmering beacon of egalitarianism off in the distance.

You'll hear about it. This is nothing but a break in the storm. Next will be the "Why can't gays be scout Masters. It isn't like all gays are pedophiles."

Damn those homosexuals for wanting to be free of discrimination!

I expect they will allow gay adult leaders in 2-5 years.

At last our young males will learn how to decorate. Most bachelor pads are pretty lame.

I support the right of the boy scouts to allow (or not allow) whoever they want to join the group, but I'm glad to hear they've decided not to discriminate against gay members.

Damn those people who want to have freedom of association.

I like the Bach's they do in places like New Zealand where it is a rite of passage to go out and build your own Bachelor Pad out of found materials without spending any appreciable amount of money on it.

Believe it or not, I don't remember ever seeing someone answer this question..... If there are any gay people reading this, do you get turned on when you shower with someone of the same sex?

I would agree if they didn't get any subsidies or privileges from government. (they do, so I don't)

I appreciate the progress, but continuing to ban gay adult leaders is wrong. All adult leaders should be considered potential molesters and monitored by another adult most of the time. Most molesters seemed to be regular, straight guys until they got caught.

So now the problem is no longer that the homos won't stop complaining. Now, it's "The BSA is being oppressed!!"

Better notify the Poutrage Squad!

It is still private property regardless of subsidies or privileges from the government. The right to association and the right to control access to your property still stands.

View point noted. For me, I don't care one way or the other. They can do whatever they want.

Did you know that all anti-discrimination laws breach the right to association and violate the thirteen amendment? No? Well, you do now. Many of them breach the right to property as well, obviously.

Like it or not, people have the right to associate and do business with who they want.

Well if you want to denigrate gays by calling them homos, feel free.

Stating that it is not over is just a reality.

Didn't say anything about the BSA being oppressed. People should be free to associate with whomever they want to associate as long as it isn't state sponsored. I guess some people feel more entitled than others. Personally, if I were gay, I wouldn't want to be a part of an organization that did not want me. I don't try to force my way into the Scientology Center or Nation of Islam meetings. In reality, the scouts are largely a bunch of geeks so I never had a real desire to participate. I am sure they did great things at one time, but I just don't see it today. Big Brothers is a more relevant organization to at-risk boys than the scouts.

I see the Pity Parade has started to move.

Now they're whining about how the BSA has been denied their freedom of association!! Waahhh!! Waahh!!

When the hell will we get past this idiocy of having to embrace every damned proclivity a person might have? There have been gays in the BSA probably forever. I don't recall ever seeing "gender identity and/or sexual preference" on any of the applications. If you were in the scouts and you were gay and you kept it to yourself then there never was a problem. If, however, you decided to make it an issue then you were being disruptive and you were out. The same applied to people who made their religion an issue or made their ethnicity an issue.

When I was in the service it was the same way. I can't imagine that some percentage of the guys I served with weren't gay but they didn't make it an issue so it wasn't a problem. What counts is what you do with your life and how you conduct yourself, not your damned "gender identity". That's your own personal thing to deal with and I don't need to know about it.

Why the hell should I have to respect you just because you're queer? What makes you so damned special that you can just circumvent all the other crap that goes into EARNING respect?

This wasn't a courageous decision by the scouts. It was acquiescing to popular opinion. This wasn't loyalty to ones principles. It was utter abandonment of those principles.

Be as dramatic as you want to be and keep trolling all you want, but I could give a rat's butt about you or which slot your tab goes into or the other way around. I know this will shock you, but some people might dislike you for reasons having nothing to do with your sexuality :2wave:

Yes, you're whining about how the BSA's constitutional rights are being oppressed, and I'm the drama queen! :lamo
