(L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For Job

Re: (L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For

Hrmmm a post with conjecture and no links. Can't say I'm surprised.

And when I do go to the effort, what will you do?

Sorry, you're so off the reservation, there is little hope of getting back to the teepee.

Here's a taste. I'll be gentle and only post this. Posting the rest wouldn't be humane.

UPDATE: State Legislature Moves To Take Away $2 Billion In Community Redevelopment | Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH)

California's communities face take-away of $2 billion over two years in community redevelopment funding putting thousands of construction jobs at risk

(from Housing CA. and the CA. Redevelopment Assoc.) The California Legislature passed a take away of $2.05 billion in redevelopment funds as part of a 30-bill package to close most of the State's current budget deficit. The State intends to take $1.7 billion in FY 2009-10 and another $350 million in FY 2010-11 (which will be deposited in county "Supplemental" Educational Revenue Augmentation Funds (SERAF) to be distributed to meet the State's Prop 98 obligations to schools). The Governor is expected to sign all bills in the budget package.

Nice link to uhhh... SCANPH.org about a bill that was introduced in a story written around what looks to be 2008. Here's a NY Times article from May 2013:

California Faces a New Quandary, Too Much Money

After years of grueling battles over state budget deficits and spending cuts, California has a new challenge on its hands: too much money. An unexpected surplus is fueling an argument over how the state should respond to its turn of good fortune.

The amount is a matter of debate, but by any measure significant: between $1.2 billion, projected by Gov. Jerry Brown, and $4.4 billion, the estimate of the Legislature’s independent financial analyst. The surplus comes barely three years after the state was facing a deficit of close to $60 billion.

At first glance, the situation should be welcome news in a state overwhelmingly controlled by Democrats, who have spent much of their time slashing programs they support. After last November’s elections, the party has two-thirds majorities in the Assembly and the Senate, relegating Republicans almost completely to the sidelines.

Instead, the surplus has set off a debate about the durability of new revenues, and whether the money should be used to reverse some of the spending cuts or set aside to guard against the inevitable next economic downturn.

Re: (L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For

You call Mr. Frugal Jerry Brown... living on a lavish lifestyle? You clearly don't know much about Jerry Brown.

Blunt and stingy, Jerry Brown suits California just fine this time around
Jerry Brown grated on many Californians when he was governor three decades ago, but his style seems to fit the state's mood well now, as he 'is making frugal fashionable, finally.'

He dismantled Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cigar-smoking tent that was ensconced on the Capitol grounds. He took the former Hollywood star’s giant “Conan the Barbarian” sword off the wall of the governor’s office, and replaced the polished walnut boardroom table with a pinewood picnic table.

“I want people when they come in my office to know they’re on a hard surface,” he says.

He has stood on a coffee table for news conferences, lives in a former Chevy dealership, walks to work, and not only flies commercial, but coach-class on the state’s least-expensive airline. And without an entourage.

Not to mention the huge surpluses Jerry Brown is running following the crushing deficits left by AHHHnold.

This is true, but I'm still no Jerry Brown fan. I disagree completely with many of his ideologies, particularly breaking the back of rural Californians by imposing annual "fire fees" aka taxes, on everyone outside the Bay Area, Los Angeles/SanDiego, and Sacramento population centers. I'm also mad as hell about his support of allowing illegals to have California driver's licenses which, under state law, will serve as proof of citizenship, allowing them to vote.

But the man has always been a humble-living, what-you-see-is-what-you-get kinda guy... and I would have puked in the voting booth if I had tried to vote for Meg Whitman.

Re: (L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For

And that includes a free house and most of his day on the taxpayer dole.

When Jerry Brown was governor of Cali before he turned down living in the governor's mansion to live in a rented apartment. You don't know what you are talking about.

Too much money?

The NY Times thinks California has too much money? The failed, rejected NY Times writes an article you salivate over, claiming California has too much money?

Do you understand how much money the state has confiscated from cities and counties? Do you understand how much liberals have raised taxes and fees?

Gold award for most insane post I've read about California.

Re: (L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For

LOL !!

California's unfunded liabilities are what ? 300 billion ? But hey it's reporting it's recouped it's 95 billion in the stock market ? LOL ! All that printed currency is holding you guys up ???

Sorry, your one dimensional data is completely deprived of factual content that shows how desperate California's fiscal situation is.

Like I said we're not worried as I think we've been ranked the Top State to do bussiness consecutively for what ? 5 or 6 years running ?

Your;e getting desperate.

LOL.....Texas is the state with the highest number of people working for minimum wage. Wow....that's not a #1 that I would be proud of Fenton. Of course businesses LOVE to do business in a state where they have workers willing to work for peanuts so that the corporate executives can be fat. I bet that makes you a real proud Texan!

Re: (L.A.) Mayor Villaraigosa ‘Didn’t Save Any Money,’ Casting ‘Really Wide Net’ For

Third in debt... beaten by California and New York.... well... ummm alright. How does being 3rd place in debt feel? Better than being 2nd or 1st? Texas laughing at California's debt is like the kid with Down Syndrome laughing at the kid with encephalitis.

You do understand what "lowest per capita" means don't you? Are you aware of the size of Texas' economy?

Apples and oranges, my brother owes more than me because of his mortgage, but he is far more able to cover it than I am so I shouldn't feel superior for being in less debt.

California however, is screwed.

It's a failed newspaper because they print information you don't like to hear. You question my NY Times as a source when you linked to some obscure site I doubt anyone in hear has ever heard of?

:lamo

California is running a surplus... just a year or two after Jerry Brown got in there. It's a fact whether you believe the NY Times or whether you choose to live in fairy fantasy land.

If you want to say he's taking credit for past policies that are just now taking effect... be my guest and prove it. I'm all ears. But if you are going to just sit back and play refuter-man and deny the facts that California is ****ting in tall cotton today compared to two years ago, you are just lying to yourself and you can ride that sinking bullship all the way down. I got the facts on my side and I linked to a credible source. Sorry if these things burst your ideological bubble and hurt your feelings.

So the state pays both for the upkeep of the mansion and for his apartment and you think that's frugal?

Well we had allot of Californians to employ as they left your plague State in search for jobs.

They're typically worth about 7.50 a hour.

Ah "surplus" with nearly 300 billion in unfunded liabillities.

Another word for the claim of a "projected surplus" from the mouth of a Lib politician is a "lie".

LOL....nice dodge. Sorry....but most people are fleeing to Texas to take a minimum wage job. Texas may be good for corporations but the workers pay for it. Living in Texas is like living in a third world country.

You know we don't mind you Cali residents coming to visit, just clean up your slug trail on the way out.

Calling Texas a third world country is real smart, since Californians are coming here to find work.

Whats that make that hell hole of a bankrupt State you live in ?

Hey, if you want to try and sell your fantasy to world, have at it. I live in California, I've been a business owner in California for over 30 years. Liberal/Progressives have screwed this state. You have zero facts on your side, only propoganda.

You not even aware that Jerry Brown signed the legislation that confiscated the Community Redevelopment funds from cities around California.

Since you have nothing but a rediculous article from the New York Times to back up your failed conclusions, I might suggest gathering some better proof, because at this time, you've offered nothing.

I've offered nothing? NY Times is nothing but your rather obscure link is the cats ass I suppose.

Simple question for you... is there or is there not a surplus in California?

I'll help you out... unless you find all these sources objectionable as well:

If you still consider these sources inadequate... perhaps you can top it with a blog or something like that in your favor.

There is no surplus. The surplus is a joke. Brown's budget is nothing but smoke and mirrors that requires money taken from cites and counties to balance. There are deferred payments to schools, deferred payments to CalWorks, and to CalPers, the public employee union. In addition, some of the increased revenue is the result of actions taken in preparation for the massive tax increase Brown pushed through, resulting in one time gains.

Follow this link. While it's an opinion piece, spend some time on google to confirm the facts in the article.

What taxpayers should know about Gov. Brown's budget: Opinion - Press-Telegram

First, the 2013-14 proposed budget would spend more than any other budget in California history. This is true even as it relates to the general fund portion of the budget which doesn't include special funds or federal revenues. In fact, the general fund budget at $97.7 billion is actually $104 billion if previous realignment dollars are included. (The "realignment funds" are simply general fund dollars sent to local governments for the purpose of paying for programs - like corrections - that were previously the responsibility of the state.) The general fund budget is once again above 2007-2008 levels - the highest ever in state

Revised California Budget Surplus May Not Last Long – Money Talks

Deferred payments to California schools are also taking up a substantial portion of the added revenues, which exceeded expectations around tax day. Analysts have parsed the one-time revenues to uncertainty at the federal level, which prompted many high income earners to shift realization of assets, including capital gains into 2012.

Bottom line? You think what you want to think. Leave facts to those who are actually involved in dealing with them where the impact is personal.

Good afternoon, ocean515. :2wave:

It's much the same as all the whining we hear when a proposed increase in spending is whittled down a bit, and then ballyhooed as an unbearable cut! As an example, instead of getting ten percent more next year, they only get to spend an increase of nine percent more! No wonder our debt is closing in on $ 17 trillion!

Hi Polgara :2wave:

Base line budgeting is the bane of governments throughout the United States.

It amazes me how many people are taken in by the sham of it. In California, the teachers unions were able to put through a Constitutional Amendment that requires 40% of the state budget be spent on education. This amount is not dependent on the number of students in public education.

40% of every dollar in additional revenue must be spent on education. With the unfunded portion of public employee benefits reaching $500 billion, the possibility of real surpluses in California is zero.

Of course, then there is our high speed rail system Governor Brown is determined to build...

I really don't think $230K is an outlandish salary for some place like LA., but then again, there are some who think our mayor's like $5K stipend is outlandish

Well, it's the highest mayoral salary in the country but that's just his salary.

Most of his day to day life is subsidized by the city's tax payers.

It's almost hard to imagine where he spent any of that money.

Gotcha...

Bloomberg Businessweek, Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal, CNN Money and The Atlantic are not credible enough sources for you because a politically partisan opinion piece says otherwise. Too... damn... funny.

And speaking of funny:

If there is no surplus, as you put it, how could it be a joke and even moreso... why did you reference a link that says that there is a surplus? Comedy gold man.

He is the personification of good for nothing big gubment liberals the world over. Even the handful of professional ones usually only specialize in stealing money from people, like lawyers.

Anyway, I'm sure he'd be a great fluffer. i don't think he's qualified for micky D's,

LOL.

The joke is only on you, and others like you, who belief the pap coming from Sacramento.

Care to refute any of the points made about the budget, deferred spending, confiscation of funds from cities and counties?

So far, you've avoided any comment about those facts, yet cling to the fantasy of Brown and his Progressive cabal actually doing anything about the economics of California.

That, my friend, is Comedy Hall of Fame.
