IRS official Lois Lerner to take the Fifth

"This is probably the worst possible outcome from the White House point of view," CNBC's John Harwood said on Lois Lerner's decision to plead the Fifth at Wdnesday's House Oversight hearing on the IRS probe. "The Inspector General had said he did see evidence of criminality in the scandal but when she stands there, takes the Fifth and says, 'to protect myself against self-incrimination, I'm not going to answer your question,' that is going to be the last thing the White House wants to see on television."

try not to get too angry, now, try to take bad news like a big boy or girl

It is her right to take the 5th.

What a patriot she is! I wonder if she'll be rewarded with a big Obamcare job?

God, this entire administration stinks from every angle. We are just getting a glimpse of it now.

Kinda makes Watergate look like an infraction comparable to a broken tail light on your car.

And I believe this IRS thing is just a distraction to divert attention from Benghazi investigations.

I wonder what new bumps there will be down the Obama road ?

you can only plead the fifth to keep from incriminating yourself in a crime. so she is admitting there was a crime

Wow, exercising one's Constitutional rights is an admission of being guilty of a crime?

What a stupid Constitution... Or perhaps a radical misunderstanding of it. One need not be guilty to be accused and convicted of a crime, and with Republicans screaming that someone has to go jail (presence of a crime not required), so who wants to be Darrel Issa's sacrificial lamb (yes, read that as scapegoat)?

It's funny, if somewhat off topic, that Republicans have successfully prevented the President from getting any governing done, and this lack of accomplishment was dragging the President's approval numbers down. Now he has become the victim, the underdog, and America loves an underdog (approval up to 54% with nothing but scandal accusations happening) I wonder why the GOP is so hot to call everything a scandal and impeachable offenses instead of waiting to see if there is anything there? I am starting to think that the GOP has become the party that cried scandal and Americans just aren't buying it. If the President is ever actually involved in a scandal, no one is even going to be listening to the GOP.

Your problem is that many of the folks who are "concerned" and "troubled" and just outright disgusted aren't members of the GOP. Take Max Baucus as only one example.

Another problem is that at some point--I'm not sure where--the President does have to be accountable. At the very least, he needs to explain why he supposedly knows nothing about what's going on. About anything.

I've seen the photo-opp pics in the "Situation Room" of him and Sec/State Clinton. Where was the President on 9-11?

I'm reading the Washington Post and, grudgingly, the NY Times. Sorry, but when you have the likes of Maureen Dowd and Eugene Robinson speaking up, the Obama Admin has a problem.

Your mistake is in thinking that people are "listening to the GOP." I'm not a Republican, and I'm not just reading what George Will has to say; I've been reading what progressives are now beginning to say.

And this is maybe what you should think about--the fact that it's not just the GOP speaking up now. Catch up on what Politico is saying. Check the WaPo headlines if nothing else.

Just don't cast the President as a victim...unless, of course, you mean to say that he's a victim of his own hubris. Do you seriously want your fellow citizens to regard the President of the United States as a "victim" or an "underdog"?

Seriously? Is he also a credulous dupe who just had no earthly idea what the heck was going on in his own Admin? Or were his chief legal counsel and chief of staff just too skeered of his basic coolness and awesomeness that they "protected" him from the FACTS that are now emerging?

If you genuinely regard Obama as some tragi-heroic, trailblazing hero, then I'd think you'd prefer to see him as a hardball-playing, ruthless, cynical political player than some pitiably clueless dolt.

If Obama is a "victim," it's of his own hubris. Or "boldness" for which he must be punished. Or doltishness. Your choice.

How's that transparency working for Obama?

Lol !!!

I know "how it works". Lois Lerner will use her Constitutional right "NOT TO INCRIMINATE HERSELF ".

Incriminate from what ? I mean in reference to a question about the IRS selectively targeting Conservative groups she will elect NOT TO INCRIMINATE HERSELF.

LOL !! What am I missing ??

You aren't missing anything. They've conveniently forgotten certain things that are inconvenient to their narrative.

Why, ah, great! The lies are transparent.

Good Morning, humbolt. :2wave:

Well, while that's not exactly what I had in mind when I heard him promise transparency in his administration, this will have to do for now, I guess.

Usually these obama people just say "I can't recall". The fact that the fifth is being invoked means this IRS thing is not the usual scandal, it is dangerous to the administration and may well go to the top.

Imagine if the Democrats were running the House, you would never have a hearing on the IRS, it would have been whitewashed quietly discussed on the back pages of the newspaper. Conservatives groups would continue to get ****ed over so their voices would not be heard in the political arena.......which is the White House MO given the war on Fox and the cutting off of access which so closely resembles what's going here, trying to drown out and silence the opposition.

This is why nobody takes conservatives seriously (and prove positive you don't understand the Constitution)

the JD started a criminal investigation and lerner will be taking the 5th.

translation, something is going on that doesn't seem quite right under the law.

For now. Lol. It's unraveling. Lerner's decision to use the 5th doesn't have all the legal implications it would have were she appearing in court. I imagine that every question contemplated will be asked, in spite of her response. We may be headed for an Independent Prosecutor.

Do we live in special times or what?
Sure is a lot of Obama shiite comin' down the road at one time, isn't it?
IRS, Benghazi, AP, and now Rosen & FOX.

This person does have the right to invoke her 5th Amendment rights. She also has a responsibility to answer question about her job. If she doesn't answer questions about her job, then she should be removed from her job. Presumably if she did something wrong, there are others who can incriminate her.

So the new tea party meme is if the 5th amendment imputes guilt to everybody who invokes that constitutional right?

BWHAHHAHHAAHAH!

This is why conservatism is going extinct faster than anyone could hope.

Good gawd, just shut up already with that crap.

She's taking the fifth because Obama doesn't want to be named, and she doesn't want to lie. Pull your head out of the sand, Ostrich Boy.

Don't forget Fast & Furious.

Funny how Obama doesn't know and isn't responsible for anything, yet Bush was held widely responsible for a natural hurricane hitting New Orleans, and media barely pointed a finger at FEMA, the governor, or mayor.

Has Obama been held responsible for the incredibly slow recovery efforts in New Jersey after Sandy?

Damn straight. Highly unusual, but this has been building for quite some time. Looks like the price for Obama's second term is going up dramatically.

Is this what's to be expected when a group of lawyers are running things in DC? Maybe we should consider electing honest everyday no-nonsense farmers and housewives to lead us, since they still have common sense, and they are more trustworthy! They certainly couldn't do worse, and it would probably be an improvement! :stars:

We now know this about Obama. He's either:

1. The presedential version of Al Capone.

2. The most clueless dumbass to ever sit behind the Oval office desk.

Take your pick, but it is one or the other. There is "no none of the above".

Hi lady P :2wave:

It seems to me that you are correct about lawyers and electing regular folks.

I remember W.F.Buckley saying it would be an improvement to take
the first 535 names from the Boston phone book.

I'm in favor of that idea but not Boston-too liberal for me!!

As we see here in this thread the defenders of constitutional rights want to skip people's right to remain silent and go right to declaring them guilty without a trial. One would think that they would have learned something from giving the executive branch the power to spy on you without a warrant and the problems that has brought up, but no they are all for eliminating their rights out of fear and spite.

This person may very well be guilty, but that is no reason for us all to forget about our important right to remain silent. Perhaps some of you might want to think about that since you already voluntarily and willingly supported handing over your right to privacy and are now seeing the president spy on people because it is now a power given to whoever holds that position. Maybe i am wrong and this time those extra powers you surrender will not be used, but if you trust Obama with the power to compel you to speak out and incriminate yourself perhaps i am wrong to argue with you.
