Republicans Expand I.R.S. Inquiry, With Eye on White House

don't you know the internet is forever

And, no, I'm not an Obama lemming. Thousands should have been arrested 5 years ago, if not 10s of thousands..................

The Internal Revenue Service allegedly told two pro-life to reveal the content of their prayers and prayer meetings, according to the Thomas More Society.

An IRS office in California ordered Christian Voices for Life of Fort Bend County, Texas to explain the content of prayers “as if they were engaging in highly offensive or criminal behavior,” the Thomas More Society charged.

Agents also ordered Coalition for Life of Iowa to provide detailed information about the group’s prayer meetings.

Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) demanded that outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller answer questions about the incidents during Friday’s House Ways and Means Committee hearing. “Their question, specifically asked from the IRS to the Coalition for Life of Iowa: ‘Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers.’”

Shock wanted to know if that was an appropriate question for the IRS to ask.

“It pains me to say I can’t speak to that one either,” Miller replied.

The agents also told one of the pro-life groups that they could not picket or protest abortion clinics.

“The IRS was concerned about advocacy,” said Sally Wagenmaker, special counsel to the Thomas More Society. “The (agent) said picketing and protesting is not allowed.”

Acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller said indicated he did not know who was responsible for the targeting of conservative groups by IRS agents. ”I don’t have that name, sir,” he told GOP congressman Dave Reichert in today’s House Ways and Means Committee hearing on the scandal, which came to light last Friday.

Reichert persisted, “Did you ask anybody?”

“Yes,” Miller responded — he asked the senior technical adviser, Nancy Marks.

“And what did Nancy tell you, who’s responsible?” Reichert asked.

“That I don’t remember, to be honest with you,” Miller said.

Republicans hit hard on the divulging of confidential tax information, hinting of intimidation not only by the I.R.S. but also by the White House.

In March 2012, the Human Rights Campaign and The Huffington Post made public confidential tax documents from the National Organization for Marriage. The Human Rights Campaign said it obtained the documents from a “whistle-blower” who mailed them to the gay rights group’s Washington headquarters.

In a similar incident, ProPublica, an investigative journalism Web site, asked the I.R.S.’s Cincinnati office for the applications of 67 nonprofits, both liberal and conservative. When the I.R.S. responded, it inadvertently included applications for nine conservative groups that had not yet been granted tax-exempt status, a violation of confidentiality law.

When ProPublica realized what it had — including the application from Crossroads GPS, the conservative group founded by Karl Rove and other Republican strategists — it alerted the I.R.S., which warned the journalists that “publishing unauthorized returns or return information was a felony” punishable by up to five years in prison. ProPublica redacted certain details and published the documents anyway.

Under fire, Mr. Miller called the agency’s targeting of conservative groups “obnoxious,” but he told the House Ways and Means Committee it was not motivated by partisanship. And in testy exchanges, he said he had not misled Congress, even though he did not divulge the targeting efforts of a Cincinnati unit examining 70,000 applications for tax exemption

The worse thing about you is not that you are young, it's not even that you ignorant. It's that you think that you are smart. This shows in how ridiculous most of your postings are. They are like summer farts, a lot of hot air that smells like crap!

Pssssst...if your'e going to critique someone's intelligence, make sure your post INCLUDES intelligence.

Now do I think I'm " smart " ?? Hell yes I think I'm smart. High intelligence runs in my family. My Dad was a Engineer for NASA during the Apollo mission's and Iv'e got a Aunt and Uncle with IQ's exceeding 140, I was tested when I was 7 and when I was 15 and my I.Q was around 138-139, but that's irrelevant really as it doesn't take High or even moderate intelligence to rebut your one dimensional, simplistic talking points.

I get being young and Liberal but how anyone could exceed the age of 30, and remain a Liberal is beyond me. Liberalism, at it's core is ignorance perpetuated by a ideology that only applies successively in a Vacuum.

So there you go, as this group of corrupt Chicago thugs drives our Economy into the ground and their mindless minions parrot out useless talking points about a bygone era they are demonstrating how useless and destructive Liberalism is. It's a hell of a Legacy to leave behind.

even if you ever argued for some increased scrutiny of the 501c's, is this really the right way to go about it

During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing today, Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., grilled outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller about the IRS targeting a pro-life group in Iowa.

“Their question, specifically asked from the IRS to the Coalition for Life of Iowa: ‘Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers,’" Schock declared.

“Would that be an inappropriate question to a 501 c3 applicant?” asked Schock. “The content of one’s prayers?”

“It pains me to say I can’t speak to that one either,” Miller replied.

After Schock pressed him further, Miller explained that although he couldn't comment on the specific case, it would "surprise him" if that question was asked.

roger simon's professional leftists and journolisters chime in with "the takeaways"

IRS hearing: The takeaways - David Nather and Lauren French and Kelsey Snell - POLITICO.com

1. who?

The big question that’s on everyone’s mind didn’t get answered during the House Ways and Means Committee hearing Friday: Who, exactly, had the bright idea at the IRS to zero in on conservative groups with search terms like “tea party” and “patriot”?

Miller and inspector general J. Russell George both denied that there were political motives behind the extra review given to conservative groups.

But under questioning from Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Miller said agents did not create search terms more commonly associated with liberal groups like “progress” or “organizing.”

we'll just have to keep digging

2. more and broader

Committee Chairman Dave Camp is already expanding the scope of the hearings beyond the targeting scandal.

Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania picked up on that theme during the hearing, asking Miller about the National Organization for Marriage leak as well as the possible sharing of confidential tax information with the White House.

When Miller said he didn’t know about that, Gerlach asked him — in a tone that made it clear it wasn’t optional — to “check all of your records, all of your notes, all of your emails and get back to this committee.”

3. dems mad

“I think what this means is that this shouldn’t be the last hearing. Let’s hear everything,” [Joe] Crowley [NY] said. As for the White House, he said, “I think they’re waiting, as we are, to find out more.”

4. miller's malaise

Would you want to be the guy who loses his job, gets thrown under the bus by Obama — and still has to show up to catch arrows from Congress?

That’s the kind of week Miller is having. To make matters worse, he spent most of the hearing saying he didn’t remember things — like the details of how he first learned of the targeting — and insisting he didn’t mislead Congress by not telling lawmakers.

And he summed up the episode with the understatement of the week: “We provided horrible customer service. We did. Horrible customer service.”

not obama's brother, the sham charity

he got excellent service---34 days, retroactive exemption

from the exact same people in cincy

5. divulge

One big lesson from the hearing: The backlash over any scandal only gets worse when you don’t tell Congress about it.

Republicans and Democrats are mad at both Miller and former IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman for not reaching out to Congress after they learned what Cincinnati was doing in May 2012 — especially since Shulman had previously testified to Congress in March 2012 that there was no targeting.

Lawmakers wanted them to come back to Congress and tell them about it — which is one reason they had so little patience when Miller said he just answered the questions he was given.

“He [Shulman] had an obligation to return to this committee and set the record straight. So did Mr. Miller. Neither fulfilled their obligations,” Sander Levin of Michigan, the top Democrat on the committee, said at the start of the hearing.

And Democrats were especially mad at Lerner, who testified at a House subcommittee hearing last week — two days before the scandal was revealed — and didn’t say a word about it. Levin wants her to be the next IRS official to step down.

In fact, Crowley, one of the Democrats on the Ways and Means oversight subcommittee, said Lerner can’t even say the question about the screening of nonprofits didn’t come up at that hearing.

“I asked her, and she didn’t answer the questions,” Crowley said. “We’re all outraged.”

sander levin and joe crowley are "outraged" they've been lied to

coverup, anyone?

why can't obama say unequivocally he didn't know before april 22?

Seriously ?? Liberals coming to round up people who share my ideology ??

C'mon, come round us up, PLEASE. Hey start that Totalitatian BS in Texas where Conceal Carry is Legal and where I can extend my grattitude through the bussiness end of a 45. Pistol.

I wonder sometimes if Obama and his band of merry men seriously consider something like that. Just arbitrary imprisonment for a politcal view, because using the IRS is pretty damn close to that.

Texas, where your'e allowed to defend yourself and your family from Obama voters and Criminals.

C'mon. Stop with the threats and do something already.

So your saying as long as it only makes the IRS look bad you are fine with it, but stay away from Obama and his administration.
Democrats are hoping it stays within the IRS

No, let it take its natural course. It will lead to where it leads. Trying at this early date with no data or proof to tie this to Obama is at least jumping the gun. This is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. But I have seen dozens of these scandals throughout my life time starting with Eisenhower and Sherman Adams. But the perception of Congressional Republicans going after Obama and not necessarily the truth will really energize the GOP base, the Democrats will howl witch hunt but that perception will linger with the independents voters and as it did in 1998, probably hurt the GOP at the ballot box. Now the perception of going after the truth and letting it lead to where it may lead even if the president is indicated as having done something wrong, major or minor, will forever tar the president during the rest of his second term and probably bring about a successful election come 2014. For independents, which are very finicky, it boils down to perception or how they see things, whether this perception is right or wrong, that is an individual call. Call this just a word of advice having seen all most every president go through things like this.

How it is perceived in the general public, not with Republicans or Democrats bases is what will determine the perception of the public as a whole. Witch hunt in an attempt to bring down the president from the get or the search for the truth which will lead where it leads and to try to fix the problems the investigation uncovered. Your call or should I say, it is the republicans call.

Wrong AGAIN.

Lying on a post by post basis doesn't change the facts.

Well lying and just omiting information all together since you totally left out the IRS's release of donors list of Conservative groups...which is illegal.

One things for sure, these 8 years of heightened stupidity from some of the electorate is going to define the Democrat legacy for years to come.

It will be a legacy of poverty, corruption, joblessness, Govt threats and harrasment of private individuals and a President Who is either so corrupt he gave the stand down orders in Benghazi and watched the whole thing unfold in the WH situation room and Lied about it and so corrupt he instituted the new HIGHLY ILLEGAL IRS POLLICY of targeting innocent Americans citizens or is so incompetent and such a poor leader he has massive amounts of corruption swirling around him and he's totally oblivious.

Look closely at the comment section. Notice that the page defaults with the NYT "picks". Go to "all" tab and you will read a very different set of comments. Typical NYT opinion manipulation.

Its called speculation it is how infractions are investigated and solved. You look for means motive and opportunity. Evidence just doesn't fall onto your lap you go out and search for it and you use means motive and opportunity to help steer you in the in the right direction, and if it steers it to Obama and his WH which motive does that is where you go with it
