Bill Would Block Bridge Cards At Strip Clubs, Liquor Stores « CBS Detroit

LANSING (WWJ) - Are Michigan welfare recipients using state funds to pay for strippers? One lawmaker says it’s a problem.
Senator Rick Jones will propose legislation that aims to make sure Bridge Cards aren’t used to withdraw cash at strip clubs or liquor stores.
Jones told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Zahra Huber it’s outrageous that people would spend that money on alcohol or strippers, instead of the basic necessities.
“My family takes in foster children. A number of them have been food-deprived because their parents use their Bridge Cards to obtain drugs and alcohol,” Jones said. “I am shocked that anybody would take the cash portion that is meant to provide for children and use it in strip clubs and to buy booze.”

I was most astounded by the last sentence in the article.

Roughly 1.9 million Michigan residents – nearly 20 percent of the state’s population – are covered by the program

And we were just told that employment is soaring and the economy is on the uptick.

Maybe not in Michigan you have to remember most statistics are all the states averaged and if you haven't noticed it's different in other parts of the country. You would say the same thing in Canada if you only looked at the Maritimes but since all provinces are included it averages out. it's that or the fact your statistics like to skimp on things, your unemployment rate would be much higher if done the Canadian way.

Yep, our unemployment rate is still through the roof, and ironically, the bluer the state, the higher it seems to be.

For us it seems to be the same both the Liberals and Conservatives can't manage a province.

While you and I probably would disagree on a lot of stuff, liberal there isn't liberal here. I'm sure you know that already.

Well the Conservatives in Alberta are as close to Republicans as you can get and even though their economy is much better than the rest of Canada they are still spiraling into debt.

Debt?

I give you California, Illinois, Michigan, and New York. They'll never get remotely close to paying that off.

I read "Bridge Cards" and was picturing playing cards so was really freaking confused.

On a related note...have you checked the number people on disability today?

http://apps.npr.org/unfit-for-work/

According to the Social Security administration, we now have almost 11 million people on disability.

Well they didn't take the obvious and bets solution in their budget by just slightly raising the already lowest in the country income taxes but no they created a carbon tax and increased the deficit.

Before you go freaking out that number is somewhat deceptive. The same cards are used to distribute SNAP and TANF. SNAp is easier to get than TANF, and you do not get cash benefits from it. SNAP benefits can only be used to purchase edible products. Also, you should be aware that low income people who earn 1000 or less a month are eligible for benefits. So that means that employers use the federal government to help subsidize their employees because they do not want to pay their hard working employees a livable wage. So those people can be employed and still be on the welfare roles as long as they do not make a lot of money. Before you go blaming Obamacare, you should also be aware that many companies avoid full time workers on their low end jobs because they offer health care, pay raises, and other benefits like retirement plans to their full time employees. So even before obamacare many employers kept most of their employees below full time and close to minimum wage. While they play these stupid games with hard working people, we get to pay the rest through taxes.

Next time get the whole story. Oh, and yes do pressure the system to alter TANF to regulate where it's money is claimed and force it's people to spend it's benefits on products they need for survival much like they have already done with SNAP.
