Rhode Island Becomes 10th State to Allow Gay, Lesbian Couples to Marry
Rhode Island Becomes 10th State to Allow Gay, Lesbian Couples to Marry - News - The Litchfield County Times

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island has become the nation's 10th state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, after a 16-year effort to extend marriage rights in this heavily Roman Catholic state.

Gays, lesbians, their friends and families erupted into cheers Thursday following a final 56-15 vote in the Rhode Island House, and then again an hour later when Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed the bill into law on the Statehouse steps.

The day was bittersweet for Deborah Tevyaw, whose wife, state corrections officer Pat Baker, succumbed to lung cancer two years ago. Months before she died, Baker, relying on an oxygen tank, angrily told lawmakers that it was unfair that Tevyaw wasn't considered her wife in Rhode Island despite their marriage in Massachusetts.

thats terrible, complete BS

Supporters framed the issue as one of civil rights, arguing in daylong legislative hearings that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and protections given to opposite-sex married couples. The Catholic Church was the most significant opponent, with Bishop Thomas Tobin urging lawmakers to defeat what he called an "immoral and unnecessary" change to traditional marriage law

The Rhode Island legislation states that religious institutions may set their own rules regarding who is eligible to marry within the faith and specifies that no religious leader is obligated to officiate at any marriage ceremony and no religious group is required to provide facilities or services related to a gay marriage.

While ministers already cannot be forced to marry anyone, the exemption helped assuage concerns from some lawmakers that clergy could face lawsuits for abiding by their religious convictions.

wasted legislation to please a strawman argument.

Well 10 down!

Oh happy days! more equality achieved, good job Rhode Island!

homos should have the right to marry...blacks got the vote...it took a long time...
you should understand this analogy and think about that....

I know I keep saying this but...

Another victory in the fight for equality and freedom.

For those who continue to stand against equality and freedom I have one thing for you...

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, i dont even think its going to take 40 years but yes that much time will add to the stupidity.

yeah well the blacks got the right to vote...but are they abusing that privilege...

same with the homos, it could backfire on us

Give us a few of the horrifying possibilities that, as you see it, could result from granting the the legal ability to marry to the 2%-4% of the population that could be definitely be designated as "homos"...................

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if a few are in both pics. What does surprise me is politicians bothering with and accomplishing this so close to the SCOTUS ruling. I know in MI it's being postponed until after.

It's sort of taken on a life of it's own, especially because any respect for the SC vanished long ago in alot of the country due to it's having becoming just a tool of the Right............

This is actually quite significant. To an outside observer, the deep-blue Rhode Island may appear to be a Vermont-by-the-sea. But these staunch Democrats were never "socially liberal". The loyal Kennedy troops? Absolutely. But also sharing most every prejudice with certain blue-color neighborhoods of Boston.

It is no surprise that all Republicans in the state legislature had supported gay marriage (they are New England Republicans - and so was Gov. Chafee, before going indie - a breed apart). But the fact that their Dems had managed to overcome the fear of losing the vote of your friendly neighborhood union thug...Anyone who lived in the area for a quarter of century, as I did, knows how remarkable this is.

It is not often that I am ready to stick a gold star onto the narrow Democratic forehead. But there, General Assembly of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, you deserve it.

I know what you're saying. RI is hardly a hotbed of liberalism, but Providence is amazingly up to date.......................

well they could decide to teach homo'ing as a sport to their adopted children...i fear this...then there is the whole what if they stare at their children's man package too much in the bath and stuff...you know sort of their minds drift to sex instead of bathing them....
it;s all way too iffy right ...

You mean like Elton John's adopted kids growing up with a penchant for platform shoes and weird eyeglass wear ? I can see that as a realistic threat, And maybe your point about viewing genitals may have some validity----------Perhaps we need to outlaw public urinals and gym showers too ?................................

Abolishing adoption is not enough. There are pedophiles among biological parents as well. All children should be confiscated immediately after birth and kept in closed government facilities run by robots (Human nurses and guards cannot be trusted either).

Good on the state of Rhode Island for actually legalizing gay marriage. Glad to see another state join the list and hopefully this trend continues and we see more states join in.

On a side note, not sure if Dr. Who is trolling or actually being dead serious
